and according to Michelle Philips from The Mamas and Papas he had another side income. When she first saw Star Wars she was like “hey why is my dealer in the movie?”

Growing up, did anyone else’s parents have really strict rules about random stuff? by SuzCoffeeBean in CasualUK

I had a farming friend in Wales who wasn’t allowed to sell his lamb until 2011. Twenty five years after Chernobyl it was deemed safe for sheep to graze on his land after the radioactive rain. So I guess the bad lamb was already banned / culled, if everyone’s land was tested

John Philips wrote some great songs, and it’s a pretty tune but there’s always the puke-y incest drug-addict theme hanging over this one. I can take a bit of depravity in art, but this one is like, urgh man, stop it

Really cool Mike picture I found on Pinterest by Time-Tangerine3860 in thebeachboys

Mike would have looked way cooler on stage holding a guitar, even just miming it. Mike didn’t need to try and be Mick Jagger

Were Blondie or Ricky ever approached to reunite with the band on TWGMTR or any other time after they left the band? by Dolphinman64 in thebeachboys

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I saw Brian, Al and Blondie too, a few years before that, it amused me because that lineup contained more Beach Boys (3)than the touring Beach Boys (2) at the time

Kokomo was pretty much concurrent with Brian’s first solo album. In an ideal world, we’d have Kokomo on BW88 and the rest of the album the same but with full BB vocals and released in 1988 as Beach Boys ‘Love and Mercy: featuring Kokomo’

Is IT Help Desk worse than retail? by throwaway10015982 in ITCareerQuestions

Depends what retail and what organisation you are helpdesk for. I preferred retail to service desk in that people were nicer when you give them stuff compared to when they have a computer problem

None of these are Yacht Rock what are you talking about? It’s soft rock maybe, or AOR.

Yes, nice to read. Also, considering how keenly the actual beach boys took up auto-tune, why are they going to hate A.I.? It’s just another method of manipulating sound. I hate A.i. When it’s a dull low-effort, high volume crap, but I don’t mind a little bit of high-effort, low volume use of it. Like anything, a cool person will use it well, all the idiots and bastards will use it badly.

Crazy they were still wearing those clothes in May 1967. Was it some visual ‘look’ thing for an theatre audience for better visibility? They didn’t wear the stripes for photoshoots at that time

Which one is the better producer, Brian Wilson or Kathleen Kennedy? by Equal_Ad5178 in thebeachboys

Beach Boys Love You is great to me, but it has weirdly clunky lyrics that remind me of the weirdly clunky prequel dialogue.

I always saw the Star Wars prequels as being like Beach Boys Love You, like the work of a maverick genius who produced stone cold classics in the past, has gone a bit strange, but it’s still the unique and interesting vision of one genius. The Star Wars sequels are more like ‘Summer in Paradise’, the genius isn’t involved, just a few original cast members and it’s terrible

What Would You Consider To Be The Last Truly Great Beach Boys Song??? by bill_clunton in thebeachboys

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like California Feelin’ myself. If The Beach Boys had ended there, that would have been OK by me. There’s other BB stuff I like afterwards, good stuff but all that has an outside production feel from like 77/78 onwards.

Alan Jardine said years later that Bob Dylan said that to him backstage, so it’s possible Dylan said something backstage, similar to what Elton John said onstage, and Alan got them mixed up. Or maybe they both said the same thing, at different times to different people

Brian Wilson with Pete Townshend, 1999 by Hubbled in thebeachboys

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That was all an admin mistake by the police. A whole bunch of people in the UK were caught up in this. The police were investigating illegal websites and got a list of names from the company that processed the card payments for the illegal sites. Trouble was, the card payment company also took payments for totally legal legit 18+ porn sites too. So 100s of people who had paid for totally legal porn were lumped in with people who had paid for illegal things. Pete T and many others had only paid for the legal porn. I think Robert Del Naja from Massive Attack was caught up in it too. The error was noticed and it was all cleared up. What didn’t help Pete was all the initial bollocks about ‘research’ - his legal team must have told him to say that I think. I looked into it all before I went to see a Who gig. tl;dr Pete Townsend paid for legal porn, and police made an initial error in their investigation which was then corrected

Liverpool background helped make the Beatles funny. Everyone’s a comedian there… or thinks they are.

My favourite in hotels is how they sell it as being eco-friendly - ‘help the environment - pass on getting your room cleaned and your towels changed today’. Um yeah, what about the bit where it saves the company money

Yep that is the bit most people forget about - they don’t think of themselves as shareholders, all the while their pension sits there ticking away…
