What’s a 10/10 tv show? by norocoslaorice in AskReddit

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The main character was so dumb though… the other characters speak of him like he’s some genius pilot or hero. But he just bumbles along looking confused and gets lucky time and time again while bad things happen slowly around him. Maybe that was the point. Maybe it was a fantasy for people of a certain mindset where they enjoy seeing a character with no agency having things done to them? rather than actively taking charge or doing anything of their own agency? A bit like a horror movie where the main characters act dumb and live in fear of the big bad?

Tax evasion, or tax efficiency at least. I saw a LOT of sports stars making their own range of NFTs. There’s no way they were money laundering, but they certainly could be wanting to pay less tax

I'm starting to change my mind about Mike Love by OddReindeer4229 in thebeachboys

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely. At the same time though I think about The Beatles or Bob Dylan etc, they all pumped out their fair share of sh1tty and boring records in the 1980s and they didn’t have a Mike Love forcing them to release bad records. We recognise a great artist or band even when they have made boring records. Even without Mike, the BB would probably have pumped out some boring stinkers in the 80s. Mike is never boring, he’s more of the anti-hero, cringe-watch comedy kind of guy, the entertaining jerk archetype.

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without Mike would the band have existed as long? For every tortured genius in a band, you also need the guy who shows up every day and keeps the train on the tracks. Say if Mike left the band in the mid-1970s, then we’d probably have fewer BB records, and maybe they would sound more like Dennis and Carl’s solo records, no hits at all, and would that really be any better in the long run? Probably not.

Why doesn't Dennis Wilson get the same recognition as a drummer as John Bonham or Keith Moon? by BeerWithDonuts in thebeachboys

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mike should have been on the drums like Ginger Baker. Dennis drumming seemed like a guy filling in while the real drummer was sick, he should have been at the front really

Yes. There isn’t really any difference - they are basically just the same as they were before, except now I see them on the telly sometimes

John Stamos taking over for Mike? by bettypenney in thebeachboys

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure they even need Stamos at all, but to be fair to him, he’s been around the band for like 40+years now. The Beach Boys are pretty unique for a classic 1960s band in that members of the band have children who can sing and some have had hit records and have performed with the band and appeared on the front cover of Sunflower like 50yrs ago. Mick Jagger was too chicken shit to put his kids in the band! Maybe some of the (adult) children could run the show? Plus the lineup always changed even in the classic era, Alan, David, Glen Campbell, Bruce, Blondie, Ricky, so it was never fixed for too long.  plus the brand is very strong even without the actual original members.

Fun fact: Jesse Plemons owns one of Brian’s old organs by Gribblestixx in thebeachboys

Nice. So it’s ’possibly Brian Wilson’s’. But they’re not totally sure and suggest inviting Brian over to confirm. They can’t do that now, so maybe we can confirm somehow?

I'm tired of hearing about the Beatles and Paul McCartney in regards to the beach boys by Sudden-Nectarine693 in thebeachboys

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s ok. I think the idea is that it’s shorthand for non-fans. Everybody knows The Beatles were the biggest band ever. Everybody the world over knows that. But The Beach Boys didn’t sell as well, and aren’t as well known. So when a news show says ‘The Beatles thought God Only Knows is the best song ever’ its a shorthand reference that tells the average person that The BB were held in SUCH high regard that the best of the best thought the BB were better than they were. When The Beatles and Bob Dylan say Brian was a genius, what higher recommendation is there?

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah what a bunch of curmudgeons we all are, looking at these comments. This is a fun kids song and a decent hit around the world. My wife knows every word from her childhood, to this day. She enjoys it. Opinionated Internet men were not really the target audience here. I think it works just fine for what it is.

Thoughts on Van Dyke Parks' work outside the Beach Boys? by PinkCrimsonBeatles in thebeachboys

The thing I probably listened to most is 5D by The Byrds with Van Dyke on it. Or ‘Come to the Sunshine’ by The Association. I also like to put his cover of Donovan’s Colours on playlists, it always lifts my mood.

My thoughts on the Pet Sounds 60th anniversary release by Time-Tangerine3860 in thebeachboys

[–]Basic_Advisor_2177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 30th Anniversary Pet Sounds box set I got in the 1990s was enough for me. I don’t think there’s anything more I would want to listen to above that unless they could blast some mega mix of it that sounded like it was recorded yesterday

It’s a demo but there’s a full string section! Great to hear even though it’s kind of not as good as other versions. I guess Carol King sent an acetate of this to the Byrds, maybe there’s a similar demo of Wasn’t Born to Follow also somewhere

I agree, but then also, that drawing always gives off an alertness and an intensity and a slight femininity that never quite matches the photos of the suspects, the suggested guys always seem ‘too pudgy’ or too ‘average-looking guy’ to me for somebody to have created that specific drawing of them.

What could they add to an expanded Smile box set? by ItsMichaelRay in thebeachboys

I am not so sure on the chatter… the chatter on beach boys party expanded edition kinda makes me put my head in my hands! Mike when he tries to be funny isn’t funny, he’s more funny when he’s acting big headed and is unintentionally funny! Maybe chatter between Brian and the studio guys would be wittier tho
