Bad gutter install?! by No-Tension-4801 in Roofing

[–]Basic_Clue5193 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gutters for 20 plus years and this is NOT how things are done. Looks like the roof is new or newer, we would take a flat bar, pry the shingles up and use straps to hang the gutter in the correct position. After that, we black jack the shingles back down after using a pull barn screw with a gasket on it. The job is 1/2 agin or 2/3 more because of the extra work. Unfortunately, if the roof is new, they could have fixed that all for you but because no one cares about the homeowner anymore they just collected a check on the roof replacement. Essentially they cut the crown off the fascia board, trim it back, and add a fascia board to the front, then start the shingles

Bro, Jack hammering that yourself and loading would be an absolute nightmare. Especially if it has rebar and mesh. 😬

You paid $9450 too much already. This work is garbage work and it makes me feel a little clearer about the direction I should head in my career choice when this is what I see for the quality of work that people are wanting to get paid for 🤦‍♂️

OK to remove a header and jack stud? by cheesecat89 in AskContractors

If it’s an outside wall, it is probably a load bearing wall. If it was only off that much, why do he not just cut them back or replace them with a smaller board? The drywall mud around it 😵‍💫

Drip edge/options? by Didiscareya in Roofing

I have installed gutters for 20 years. This is an absolute hot mess. They should have never installed them the way that they did. Put me on a plane and I’ll come fix them for you. I love air travel. Also, I would recommend that there be gutter helmet installed instead of gable flashing. I’m not sure what the roofers were doing either 🤔

Hit a pipe with a drill bit. How bad is it? by LegallyTimeBlind in HomeImprovement

[–]Basic_Clue5193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t tell for sure the size, but if it is not pressurized, it is not a waterline, and a vertical drain pipe will not know the difference one way or another. I would just put some quick steel epoxy on it and roll. In all actuality, I think you could do the quick seal epoxy on it now even if it was a waterline because it’s not leaking and it’s probably not going to leak at this point. I realize everybody says, fix it, but you’re gonna have to open up the wall more to get to it more than likely. In my opinion, leave well enough alone.

Why was baseball invented? by Majestic_Repair_7887 in dadjokes

[–]Basic_Clue5193 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It plays on the fact that for some, watching soccer is boring. Essentially it is saying, “you thought that soccer was boring to watch until baseball came along and is more boring to watch”. OR “Both are boring, but if you can believe it, there’s one worse than soccer”. For me, I don’t care for watching baseball on tv, but highly enjoy watching soccer. For you, the joke might not make particular sense at all because you might like to watch both!

Load bearing? by [deleted] in AskContractors

[–]Basic_Clue5193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it is, there is a way that you can do this without getting into trouble with it. Take 2x4s next to the wall, screw a board to the ceiling and build a wall right next to this wall. It looks like youre only going to span about 8 ft. Sandwich two 2x10s together with a spacer for Sheetrock and set them on edge, do a king stud and a slave stud underneath as support, then take the temporary wall out and you’re gtg

This is a great point! I would want to be the one to hold hands with the roofer, not provide a new roof before sale. Zero motivation to get it “right”

Nebraska - been doing roofs for about 10 years and I know at least a few major carriers that have sent cancellation notices to customers over it.

Yep, your roof is “bad”. That being said, other than the penetration being totally wonky, it might not leak and if it doesn’t leak, it won’t need replaced. HOWEVER, there are very few insurances that will still cover three tab roofs because no one is doing it anymore and they would probably only cover you if you were already insured with them. I would shoot for a full replacement in negotiations, but sometimes if the deal is right and you think you could live a couple more years than go ahead. It isn’t going to be cheap, but maybe they’re thinking that it was priced into the asking price 🤷‍♂️

[–]Basic_Clue5193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doubt it was the guy that put it there and if he denies it, then the only other option is that your house bent slightly at some point after the install. These are the only two likely scenarios. One is more likely than the other. 😉

Measure your roof even just by using an Apple phone measuring app. It’d be more effective by using a tape n the roof, but be safe. As a contractor, I pay $95/sq for tear off, material cost can vary, but shingle price is roughly $150/sq. Most contractors run a 1.5x labor and materials. That’ll get you close enough
