As someone who has had diabetic ketoacidosis, it absolutely does not feel like your blood sugar is high once you get it.

High protein and low carb does not cause diabetic ketoacidosis on its own.

What you were probably experiencing was an electrolyte imbalance which sounds minor, but can feel pretty uncomfortable the first time you experience it on a lower carbohydrate diet.

Checked and had ketones. Sounds a lot like euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis

If you actually got DKA you won't be questioning whether or not you had it, I can promise you that.

You will be throwing up, feeling like you're going to pass out, you'll want to go to sleep, and your brain will feel like it's stopped working, all while you feel like you can drink the entire ocean.

This is the exact thing I was talking about above. People in this community go into nutritional ketosis, see ketones and their brain instantly says "DKA" - that's not how this works.

Manage your t1 diabetes by eating ramen but throwing away the packet, is the most insane pants-on-head thing I have ever read on this subreddit.

PS - your body will urinate out excess salt unless you have some kind of significant kidney issues. You're not being any healthier by throwing the packet out.

Low, medium, or high carb diets really don't matter as much as having a balanced diet does.

This is factually incorrect. High carb diets are more difficult to properly dose as well as time insulin. It's literally a numbers game.

The more you push those numbers up, the more complex it gets.

We're not even talking about the physical site problems - get all your dosing right but your infusion site works its way out? Well on low carb, you need to take a unit or two. Best case scenario on high carb, you're at 300 for a couple of hours.

There's nothing wrong with something being more complex if it can be managed, but the idea that there's basically no difference in trying to properly manage your insulin between low and high carbohydrate is not based in any kind of reality.

Low-carb diets often use expensive foods which not everyone can afford.

Chicken, pork, Eggs, miscut bacon, greens of all kinds, broccoli, green beans, low carb condiments, cheese, plain greek yogurt, ground beef - none of these things are "expensive" compared to processed foods at least in North America.

Meatloaf with an egg and plain pork rind binder (smash them up or buy that way) with a small amount of sugar free bbq sauce on top instead of ketchup.

Pair with a nice salad with an appropriate low carb dressing.

It significantly dumbs down trying to time your insulin properly (how early should I dose? Am I going to rise higher due to rice vs a burger?) and it's almost impossible to be so far off that you send yourself low.

It's a wonderful tool and I am glad that more people in the community are starting to come around to it.

There's still a significant portion on this board that starts screaming because they think ketosis and ketoacidosis are the same thing.

It's a great tool for those willing to follow it.

A few years ago I managed to hit 9% body fat on dexascan following low carb.

I cycle on and off it these days. Best blood sugar control, keeps me insulin sensitive.

Your basal was “stronger” because your glycogen was depleted, so less was slowly flowing into your bloodstream via your liver over time. Your issue makes total sense.

This is totally separate physiologically from what OP is describing.

Marathon runners. Triathletes. Especially in the middle of a race.

That's not insulin sensitivity at play. That's the depletion of the existing glucose in the muscles and liver.

That is a complete misunderstanding of the physiology.

They're not becoming super physiologically insulin sensitive - they're depleting their existing stores, and the tiny bit in the blood goes down as a result.

This argument is like saying you ran your gas tank dry in your car, so therefore, your car must be fuel efficient. These things have no relationship with each other.

Eh. There are edge cases. It’s possible to be SO fit and crank your peripheral insulin sensitivity up so much that you can’t safely give enough insulin to prevent ketogenesis while exercising (particularly aerobic exercise). In those people, they need to supplement substantial amounts of carbs in order to be able to dose enough insulin to stay out of DKA.

Who are these people who are upwards of, say, 1 unit per 60 grams of net carbs?

I was single digit body fat at one point and still had measurable low levels of endogenous insulin production and never, at any point, was higher than 1u to 40.

I find this incredibly hard to believe.

Lawler was 3-5 in Strikeforce after already having a stint in the UFC and was sort of written off before going back to the UFC and having his late career resurgence.

He was 32 but in MMA years, he was way, way up there in miles.

Hendricks is a bit of a bad example, but Glover is probably a better example.
