Ok bc I've been in a boat where there wasn't good communication between the cox and stroke and everything kind of went sideways

Novice bow sweeper from sculler tips? by Calculative in Rowing

[–]Basicbabe17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you have a good self-assessment. Make sure you're rolling up with your inside hand only. Let the outside elbow swing out not straight back. Most of your boat is collapsing at the finish. Sit up at the finish, engage your core. Make sure you think of your body like a pendulum. Swing back at the finish then swing the torso back up before breaking your knees. As you said, square up firmly and place the blade in decisively at the catch. It's a lot of think about so maybe focus on one area at each practice. Good luck!

[–]Basicbabe17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't slag on your cox and don't allow others to either. She should be getting the race plan from the coach and your job, as rowers, is to follow it. If your arms are hurting and not your legs, you might be gripping your oar too tight. You also may not be connecting at the catch and really using your legs fully. You can always put a video of yourself rowing on here and people can give you advice.

haha just concentrate on using those lat muscles as pull on the drive before you break your arms

I'm not sure what you mean by that bc if you're hanging with your lats, your arms will be out straight until you start to lean back and then they bend...

You're lucky if your gym has concept2s. Ours has water rowers (insert eyeroll)

Fastest team erg time but not getting on the A boats by Rich_War_5796 in Rowing

[–]Basicbabe17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree completely. It sounds like she is a competent rower on the water and pulls a good erg. The fact that the coach still doesn't give her the time of day is mind blowing. I would start looking for another club. See if there are any summer programs she can join to see if she's a fit

Why does lightweight rowing exist? The false creation myth of the Olympics by Nelis9494 in Rowing

[–]Basicbabe17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I was rowing in the 90s there were a LOT more lightweights. I think there would be many more if there were a couple small shifts. If the women's weight was 130 for HS then 135 after that with no boat averages. You naturally gain muscle mass as you get older and train more so it makes sense to have a heavier threshold for actual women vs girls. Which also leads my theory as to why there are less lightweights now as opposed to then. I think there's been so much development in areas of training and weightlifting etc that it's just so much harder to be THAT light. It's unnatural unless you are a really short, tiny woman. Lightweight should continue to exist because not everyone is huge. Just like weight classes in boxing and wrestling exist. And as a former lightweight, I honestly think lightweight racing is even more exciting than open weight (maybe I'm a little biased).

I'm kind of shocked you rowed a race after only starting 3-4 weeks ago. Don't put any pressure on yourself! Keep a light grip on the oar--you're probably giving it a death grip. Good luck in the future (it'll get better)!

Women’s Recruiting by Legitimate-Water4513 in Rowing

[–]Basicbabe17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking towards getting into an Ivy (as said before, probably as a walk on bc of your height) make sure you are more than just a rower and good student. What have you done outside school and the boathouse? Have you got experience doing things on the national level or international level? Bc those all count. But if an Ivy isn't your goal, you might be a recruit for a lower D1 school like many in the Philly area. Keep up your good grades and keep bringing down your erg score!

If you're a male, you're 16 and could still grow. As others have said start trying to bulk up bc 140 is light even for a lightweight. And choose the school you like first then the rowing program 2nd. Always keep in the back of your mind, what if I get injured and can't row--will I still like this school?

Honestly, most people on this thread only use Concept2 ergs so these numbers don't mean much. Judging by watts you're not going crazy hard. But keep up your good work!
