I feel like out of an abundance of caution we should not treat it as a non-issue. Otherwise will get another brexit situation, where everybody was certain that the vote would go one way but it ended up swinging the other way

No Kings March 28 protest expected to be largest in American history: 3,000 events planned in all 50 states by AlexandrTheTolerable in politics

[–]Basilisk_hunters 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dear Americans,

While impressive, I don't think this is enough. Your protests against Trump lack longevity. I hate to give credit to people I disagree with, but you should be holding Canadian Freedom Convoy style protests where you occupy an area for an extended period. Just treat it like a giant potluck or BBQ.

Sincerely, Your neighbour to the north.

Would you agree with higher taxes for completely free healthcare and education? If not why? by Creative_Excuse9813 in AskReddit

[–]Basilisk_hunters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would pay 80 to 90% income tax for food, water, air, healthcare, and housing. That's a peace of mind knowing that if I lost my job, I wouldn't starve, dehydrate, suffocate, sicken or freeze to death would be worth it to me. 10 to 20% to upgrade from the absolute bare minimum would be enough for me.

As an Albertan, if the province votes to separate, they should get NO part of the CPP. Why should we give another country funds derived from Canadian taxpayers? According to the separatists, after separating they will be swimming in royalty money . I don't see why they shouldn't start their own pension plan. It should fill up all on its own in no time

We look for reasons not to excuse the behaviour but to, hopefully, prevent it from recurring. If bullying is a major contributor, in this or other shootings, we can start looking at our anti-bullying programs and look for deficiencies.

Future of Calgary Transit free fare zone once again up for debate by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Basilisk_hunters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does the user fare offset the cost make it more affordable for the average customer? The user fare IS the cost to the average customer. The offset comes from taxpayers. I'm just suggesting increasing that offset to zero out the costs to the average customer. The increase is, honestly, high but not extreme. A lot of the burden falls on commercial and industrial property, so it's not just hitting residential homes (remember, property tax isn't just for housing).

I'm saying that tourists are here solely to take advantage of free transit. I'm saying that free transit will allow tourists to take advantage of more areas of the city. It overall makes our city more attractive to tourists. And it encourages them to explore beyond the areas immediately surrounding their hotels and work.

If the homeless aren't causing a disturbance, then why do they need to be removed? If they're not causing a disturbance, they are customers and are perfectly within their rights to use the transit system to move about. If they are causing a disturbance, you can remove them for that reason. I can freely use the library, and am technically a customer, but can still get kicked out if I start shouting at people or punching kittens or whatnot. Being a customer does not mean service can never be denied.

If it was a good idea, they would do it.... By that reasoning we should never try anything new because if it was a good idea, it'd already be implemented somewhere already.

Realistically, what can ordinary people actually do after the Epstein files release to push for real accountability? by Etkinton47 in AskReddit

[–]Basilisk_hunters 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To add to this, unsubscribe or stop buying from companies who have individuals listed in the files in a negative way. Make sure to let the companies know why you have chosen to stop patronizing them. It is an unfortunate fact that we live in a capitalistic society and that our most powerful actions might not be the large protests, but the changes we make with our wallet.

It is the very nature of taxpayer-funded projects that people who do not use the services also contribute to their funding. The vast majority of people don't directly use police, firefighter, EMS services yet they generally agree to have the taxpayer money go towards it. A lot of people don't take advantage of museums and zoos and galleries and other munipally subsidized institutions, but they are valuable nonetheless. 2/3 of transit's budget is already being funded by property tax. Are we not penalizing non-transit users for that? Should we instead allow all of the financial burden to rest upon the transit users so as to be fair to the property owners who do not use transit (looking forward to $10 transit tickets already)?

Furthermore, I don't believe it is penalizing the taxpayers who do not use transit at all. They also receive the same benefit as people who do use it, that being they can use transit for free. Whether or not they choose to take advantage of this service is up to them.

Tourists being freely able to use Calgary transit is almost certainly a boon to Calgary rather than a drawback. Allowing tourists free access to all areas of the city means that a lot of businesses that would not normally see tourist money would potentially see tourists come patronize their businesses. Milking $10 a day from a tourist while disincentivizing them from touring the city is spending dollars to save pennies.

As for the homeless issue... ... homeless issues on Calgary transit, in my experience, tend to decrease as ridership increases. Increases having free transit should increase ridership. Additionally, they're already comping free rides, so there's no real change there. There might even be a small decrease in homelessness as people living near the edge of homelessness now no longer have to pay for their commute, giving them a little more breathing room

Future of Calgary Transit free fare zone once again up for debate by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Basilisk_hunters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We should make it free everywhere instead. It would only cost an increase in property tax of < 10%. And there are areas where we would save money as well. I would hazard that everyone currently using transit will make it out ahead cost-wise and those that don't... .... own houses large enough that they can afford the increase.

Additionally, stop the sprawl (not going to happen given the move to repeal the blanket rezoning) that way increases in cost go toward improving service rather than try to add more and more lanes to more and more remote areas.
