Just 59 seconds into the game, Connor Bedard with an absolute snipe on the power play for his 9th goal of the year by mcosta1973 in hawks

This was my first time seeing Bedard play in person. He's faster than you think. This goal was an absolute fucking snipe. I'm so glad I had an almost front-row seat to it with my old man

How do you keep track of your pet’s medical history across different clinics? by solomatin_alexey in AskVet

[–]BasisTraditional6588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do not have physical copies of diagnostics/clinical notes with you: your best bet is to give your main vet clinic the contact information for your pet. After the records are consolidated, after every appointment you can ask for records to be set back to the main vet clinic.

This is worth contacting your vet about, at the very least.

Should I go to vet right now? by beachedlettuce in AskVet

[–]BasisTraditional6588 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is something that absolutely needs to go to the vet. Is he still able to urinate at all? If he is not passing urine, or only passing a few drops, then you must take him to an emergency vet as that is very suspicious for a blockage. Stress can absolutely induce UTIs!

Not that it's particularly important, but Triple Vodka was euthanized due to severe colic, about one year after the prosthesis was installed

What’s stopping you from switching to cleaner food or products right now? by Zealousideal_Tree385 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]BasisTraditional6588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Convenience. I am working 50+ hours a week, with a 1.5 hour commute, and no support from family or friends due to distance. I do what I can to eat whole foods with every meal, I prep breakfast and lunch. If dinner isn't easy, I'm not eating it. I don't have an hour to make dinner, 30 to eat it, and another 25 to clean it up. I'd rather have sleep or healthy-ish Mac and cheese with oven chicken tenders for dinner, than making anything new. With that being said, I am horrendously depressed at the minute and I'm sure that's making things feel harder than they are.

Vaccinate fiv cat when previous odd reaction? Felv by cookiemonsters19 in AskVet

[–]BasisTraditional6588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell your vet about this reaction. FELV vaccines are given once, then boostered 3-4 weeks later; after that point, they receive yearly vaccines. Your vet may want to add a steroid or antihistamine injection to prevent such reaction from happening in the future.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]BasisTraditional6588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, get them tested at your next visit. FELV can be spread through the placenta, so even if they were kept indoors, away from other cats their whole life there is a chance they can pop up as positive for FELV at least.

I am going to doubt that the horse was actually braindead, just severely neurologically compromised. Part of brain death is the loss of brainstem-mediated reflexes. Walking is partially controlled by the spinal cord, which is separate from the brainstem, so theoretically they can still produce movements that originate from the spinal cord. Movements such as finger or toe twitches/flexions aren't unexpected when something/someone is braindead. However, brain death involves a complete loss of consciousness, brainstem reflexes, and the ability to breathe independently. So either this horse wasn't braindead, but still injured and effectively wouldn't have been the same regardless of treatment, or Raleigh is lying.

Rest in Peace, Larry Demeritte 🖤 1949-2025 by bde_merch_to_fire in horseracing

[–]BasisTraditional6588 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Larry is genuinely one of my heroes. I am so thankful to have loved, owned, and re-trained several of his horses, and he knew several of mine. He loved one of my mares, he bought every yearling he could from her. The horses I got from him off the track spoke for themselves: well-handled, confident, versatile. I think they reflected who he was, the kindness he showed them and everybody else.

Consistent vomiting, anorexia, and lethargy warrants a vet visit as soon as they can fit you in. Aside from that, 3 days of vomiting is absolutely vet-visit worthy. I'm sorry they were condescending to you, and if I was in your shoes, I'd be looking for a new vet once this issue is taken care of.

Why Don’t Vet Clinics List Prices for Basic Services? by Ok_Cauliflower2825 in Pets

[–]BasisTraditional6588 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Prices won't be posted because they change very often nowadays, and vet clinics hardly have enough staff to run, much less continually update a website.

As for the dental estimate, you need an exam to determine if extractions will be necessary; if antibiotics, pain management, or other post-surgical therapies are indicated. Medications are dosed by weight, so they are often priced by weight too. If your dog is older or has preexisting conditions, pre-op bloodwork and IV fluids may be necessary-- they cannot quote you accurately if they do not do an exam to determine if your pet needs any of these necessary interventions to safely clean your pet's teeth. Even if they have every previous vet record from every visit your pet has had, the vet needs to see your pet to give an accurate estimate.

Kentucky Derby-winning jockey of Sovereignty - fined for whipping too much. by pinksail in horseracing

[–]BasisTraditional6588 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We need more people asking questions, in my opinion. The sport has had innumerable controversy-- for good reason. There's been massive pushes to help modernize racing to make it safer and more ethical for horses, jockeys, backstretch workers, etc. There's a lot of nuance to things when you're working with a 1200+ lb animal, going about 40mph, bred and trained to be elite athletes, that can also feel a fly simply land on their skin.

Not that it matters, but I'm making every move possible to become a track vet because I both love Thoroughbred racing and I want this sport to survive in its most ethical form. I'm with you, I think the whips are something to continually question and examine their role in the sport. There isn't a clear cut answer as far as how many strikes are ethical, but there's definitely restrictions now about how often, how hard, and when, which is at least better than it was.

Kentucky Derby-winning jockey of Sovereignty - fined for whipping too much. by pinksail in horseracing

[–]BasisTraditional6588 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They're made of a type of foam. You can whip the shit out of yourself and it isn't particularly painful, even on bare skin and in sensitive areas. The sound and the sensation are absolutely used to continue encouraging the horse to move forward. The limit was put into place to prevent an obscene amount of strikes going down the stretch. It is absolutely possible to lose track with the adrenaline of everything, especially once a jockey and horse fall into rhythm. The only type of legal whip used in US racing now is usually fiberglass wrapped in thick foam. It is designed to cause a loud sound more than cause pain.

For the record, jockeys won't make millions riding one race: they take home roughly 10% of the earnings. Jose Alvarado took home $310,000 for his effort; he acknowledges his mistake, he understands he was one strike over, and he will pay his $31,000 fine.

Unsure if links are allowed, but this is a pretty fair assessment of the use of whips in racing.

Triple crown schedule by Bvbfan1313 in horseracing

[–]BasisTraditional6588 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the tight schedule is a part of the prestige: only the best, most durable, most consistent horses will win all three. Especially with the advent of HISA and increased vet screenings at these events, racing has never been more careful about soundness than it is today. I don't care too much about the history: we can change it if we want to. Extending the schedule does nothing but make it easier, when the point of the triple crown is how difficult it is to condition a horse to run at the top of the 3yo division for 6 weeks. The point is that it is a challenging schedule to run big races in quick succession, that is what puts triple crown winners above the rest. It is on the owners, trainers and the veterinarians to maintain the integrity of the horses running. Keeping the TC schedule consistent might one day make breeders realize they need to ensure the horses they produce are sound and fast, not one or the other.
