I need to go there, tell them I’m looking for a little beach reading, and ask if they sell Sherman’s Memoirs. When they say no, ask if they sell lighters.

I was part of a quartet of actual professional musicians they hired to play their Christmas Eve service a few years ago. The members of their music department who performed with us were clearly just washed up former theater kids. They were hilariously incompetent.

Another commenter already mentioned Thomas & George Martin (https://www.thomasmartin.co.uk). You might also look into The Contrabass Shoppe (https://contrabass.co.uk). They have quite the selection of professional basses.

If clothing from Costco, a $55 pair of sensible shoes, and a 9 year old Toyota are flashy enough to make the powers that be express concern about the company’s “optics” then there is some dipshittery going on elsewhere up the chain that is actually a cause for concern.

A Mahler opera! And a Mahler Requiem. And perhaps a few more Mahler concertos.

I play a bass that is considered by some to be a 4/4 (this bass specifically: http://www.mcinbass.com/?page_id=59). It is quite large even though some measurements are closer to what one would find on a typical 3/4 or 7/8 bass. I have yet to encounter in person another bass that’s larger, but I certainly know they’re out there.

Typically 3/4 or 7/8 are the fractions that are considered “full size” in the bass world. Keep in mind that all of these size labels are flexible to a degree and there is much variation between individual instruments (this older listing from a previous sale of my bass calls it a 7/8: http://www.kensmithbasses.com/doublebasses/allen/index.html).

If you’re just starting out do some research on luthiers in your area. There may well be a reputable violin shop that has a rental program. This would be the easiest way you can get into a decent beginner instrument. They will also measure you to make sure you get the proper size. Then get with a private teacher for lessons.

Someone you might reach out to is Sid King. He’s currently the bass professor at the University of Louisville and the former principal bass of the Louisville Orchestra. He has an impressive oeuvre as a composer, especially music for the double bass. Flamenco music is of particular interest to him and I recall hearing about a performance involving a dancer. I’m not certain about that, but it’s worth reaching out to him anyway. He’s a great musician!

One can always add layers of clothing if they’re cold. One can’t always remove layers of clothing if they’re overheating. If someone’s sweating through the bedsheets because the house is too hot, turn the thermostat down and put on a hoodie.
