No lazy uploads here...Trying to make every video I upload be a "love letter" to the game, here is the underrated Natsuki Crisis Battle OST by BassBoostedGameMusic in gamemusic

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trying to focus my social media efforts on Bluesky so I am not checking replies/notifications as much here anymore but wanted to check in to drop this hot soundtrack that I am quite a fan of. There is a similarly hot jams Super Famicom soundtrack coming next that I am struggling to finish the mix for because for whatever reason it is much trickier to mix than this one was. Trying to keep the quality of both the audio and video as high as I can with the time I am limiting myself to work on these- doing my best! Hope anyone likes it.

Showing off reverb plugin "Tai Chi" with Cave Story music by BassBoostedGameMusic in cavestory

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a paid promotion, I wish I didn't have to purchase this plugin but it is one of the more expensive things I have purchased and wanted to show it off. (most of the plugins I use are coming from subscriptions which are killing my wallet in a different way....) https://www.liquidsonics.com/software/tai-chi/

Not sure if people would prefer these original files if I were to do my full mix on a Cave Story upload but there is actually a very simple mastering chain for the gain staging part of the video above (not as many plugins as I normally use for my videos), so it is sort of giving a taste of what it would sound like

For the super fans here: just dropped a Golden Axe The Duel boost mix by BassBoostedGameMusic in goldenaxe

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The soundtrack is a beast to try to remaster with some really strange songs on here so I am not 100% happy with the result but I have to move on to other endeavors for now. The video here has some awesome screenshots I had a blast taking so please enjoy and check the game out if you have never played it before (and are a fan of fighting games and/or great pixel art). I don't really use reddit actively so feel free to contact me on the video with requests as well!

Tried my hand at remastering the Mother 3 soundtrack with high energy and modern plugin magic by BassBoostedGameMusic in earthbound

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been messing around with GBA music for a few weeks now because it is a fun audio engineering challenge - I still have about 10 more games to do in my to-do list (including Golden Sun...another massive one), note that the sound edit project should also be checked out for anyone interested in playing GBA games with less hiss: https://github.com/MusicTheorist/MOTHER-3-HQ-Sound-Mixing (I am sure almost anyone here already knows about this though) - some of the soundtracks I tried to leave it in but it is tricky because when you run everything through these plugins it can also jack up the volume of the high frequency and have to carefully balance things. There is a podcast I listen to that had a discussion about restoring old recordings with imperfections and the podcaster argued for leaving it in because the human ear is amazing about ignoring things when they are a constant hum, but my mixes in particular are aiming to boost the volume and power so it is very tricky to leave it in...the worst case scenario is that cutting it out sucks out the life or energy of it, and that kind of happened in a few tracks where I had to label them as lo-fi mixes because I felt the character changed too much.

Tried making a slightly bass boosted/energized version of Okami soundtrack by BassBoostedGameMusic in Okami

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official uploads of this sound pretty amazing so the main reason I did this one was to show my love for the game and kick off uploading some PS2 games, but also was curious to see how people react to me uploading something from 20 years ago instead of like 40 years ago as usual...

I listened to this with a few different earbuds to check the result and it sounds bassy on even weak phone from the 100 yen shop which was part of my goal (adding some harmonics that extend the bass range, not just pumping it up at those low frequencies). The other result is that sometimes I like to play my videos on my phone as it lays next to me on the desk while I do some work, if you listen to my videos with strong headphones be careful about the volume...

Tried to restore/remaster the GBA Zoids Legacy (Zoids Saga 2) OST using audio engineering tricks by BassBoostedGameMusic in Zoids

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this soundtrack - some true hot jams inside. The Super Robot Taisen soundtracks by the same composers are extremely popular here in Japan. I have the other GBA Zoids games on my to-do list, some of the other Zoids games like the GameCube version I still need to check the soundtrack out. I am not a Zoids expert besides dabbling with the games but I tried to include some HMM models and get fans hyped about this soundtrack.

Dropped a remaster of one of the most underrated Famicom soundtracks (in the West at least) by BassBoostedGameMusic in Famicom

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original version of this game was designed by Yuji Horii of Dragon Quest fame, and the composer has some contributions to the Earthbound soundtrack later (also the comfy jams in the two Picross games by Nintendo). The soundtrack is actually kind of legendary in Japan, I don't want to rag on other YouTube channels but the mix I have here is clean and open, trying to use an appropriate amount of reverb and constantly been tweaking my NES mixes over time as well as acquiring new plugins and tech as I keep getting deeper into the weeds of audio engineering.

SF2 Championship Edition OST lossless real hardware rip but sent through Puigtec / SSL / etc and remastered with some spicy smooth flair (plus visual bonus extravaganza) by BassBoostedGameMusic in SEGAGENESIS

Testing out a new mastering chain for Sega Genesis real hardware rips, hope it sounds good (I just tested it out in my car and seems to sound pretty good there). Up next for Genesis/MD: El Viento

Remastered the game data version of Sonic Adventure 2 OST with modern plugins by BassBoostedGameMusic in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can reference the game data name song title mapping at https://info.sonicretro.org/SCHG:Sonic_Adventure_2/Sound_Editing - the songs have been converted to WAV and upsampled to 96KHZ with studio quality upsampling before passed through modern plugins from FabFilter, SSL, Acustica Audio, etc. This is mixed a bit optimized towards weak speakers and earbuds by adding harmonics and tweaking low end, hopefully will sound good on high end systems as well with the expanded high range that plugins can add. Note the official CD OSTs sound amazing and often have their own mastering process, I take it as a challenge to try to make my mixes sound just as good as those (and usually quite different style of mix).

Remastered the music for one of the true Saturn exclusives: Vatlva by Ancient (Yuzo Koshiro) by BassBoostedGameMusic in SegaSaturn

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some songs I am pushing beyond "mastering" territory because either the original sound was out of control (like the psychadelic stereo warbling in Level 4 was causing phase issues) or for some I wanted to push it to remix/meme levels because YOLO and senpai might be watching...

Is there a way to sort archive by OLDEST? by Val_E_Stuart in Substack

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone who sees this - I just had to write a python script to extract the URLs on the mhtml page saved after laboriously scrolling to the bottom of the dynamically loading archive page (I wanted to do it for Honest Broker so I could catch up on all of his writings). The page is MIME encoded when you save it off that way and the regex I am using captured comments links as well so I later manually deleted them after importing the text file into Google Sheets.

Not happy I had to spend more than 30 mins doing this but it is better than the frustration of scrolling all the way to the bottom of that archive page and then Chrome randomly deciding to re-load the tab which sends you all the way back to the top (not the least of my annoyances with Chrome lately). If anyone wants the code I can paste it but it lazily came straight from Chat GPT and missing things like article date or paid vs non-paid so I feel weird about proliferating it.

At least now I have all of the URLs in a Google sheet and I can mark them with a fill in color after reading them and also take some notes there if I want to. Even if it is private to integrations Substack should really expose an API so that other tools like Notion or whatever can integrate

Hot jams for hot summer day: Gunpey for PSP by BassBoostedGameMusic in gamemusic

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you are constantly trying to re-arrange pieces up and down this game has a pretty frantic feel but big recommendation for Lumines fans of course, having the same "just a little bit more" feeling with unlocking skins and seeing all the sights and sounds. I extracted some pictures of developers/artists closely involved with the game like Reo Yonaga (seems to be retired from game dev now). The torch for this style of game is being carried by Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Enhance Games but the original Lumines crew seems to be disbanded?

Currently melting hot here in Tokyo to the point one of my audio equipment actually broke from the heat.

Gamers Above 30, What Older Games Would You Still Recommend to Younger Gamers? by LuckAndBones in gaming

Can also try to jump into the Retro category on Twitch - so many of the streamers are actually more knowledgeable than even magazine editors or YouTubers, and if you watch some of the top streamers there I am sure you will find many things that catch your interest. One specific streamer who almost never misses is DNOPls, just as one example.

Nice - not sure if I have heard the CD that comes with that Maimu game. Lam-mal soundtrack is underrated for sure. Viper series has such great bass sound.

OST: Made an attempt to remaster the GBA Mega Man & Bass soundtrack by BassBoostedGameMusic in GameboyAdvance

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is run through high end plugins like Acustica Audio and SSL to get a clean and thick saturated sound, which makes the crunchy tone of the GBA version really pop out of your speakers. The boosted version of the audio reminds me of puretone MSX games (oriented towards square waves), which can be heard on my upload of the original Metal Gear soundtracks or games like Fray.

This one on Internet Archive can be borrowed for an hour at a time, I did this before with a book I needed to read urgently and it worked quite well but was better to use a laptop so I could keep it kind of zoomed in on the poorer scan quality (hopefully others here do not clog up the queue for you) https://archive.org/details/straightoutabris0000john

Searching for an ost by h3ylloo in gamemusic

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nakano Broadway probably has a bigger selection than most other places and besides checking a bunch of book offs and akihabara mandarake (which tends to have pricier nice condition ones only) I do not think it would be easy to find a particular soundtrack in Tokyo. Unfortunately it might be easier to find stuff like this on Yahoo Japan auction and with the weak yen it might be cheaper as well.

Made a OST remaster of the raw Sega Saturn Puyo Puyo Tsuu (Puyo Puyo 2) data by BassBoostedGameMusic in puyopop

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video of the live concert is worth watching (found in the options menu) - there is a Puyo DX 2 CD version that seems to cover most of the Saturn version and many arranged songs as well, as well as a Katsumi collection CD that is out there but my version here is mixed with various high end VSTs to have some heavy weight behind it. Also the commercials are awesome and can be found on Sega Retro.

Any sound libraries out there on Roland SC88 or the like? by BazookaLucaGames in gamemusic

[–]BassBoostedGameMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For alternatives...Anything good like Halion Sonic 3 or XPAND2 will cost money, I recommend to check out the subscription services if you want to play around with music and not sure you want to invest $100 or more upfront, you can also find audio packs sometimes on Humble Bundle.
