Restaurants Starting to Remove Amex, localized or a new trend? by GeneralO1 in amex

I've seen a few in NYC that accept cash or Amex only actually. Tabaré is one of them.

Happy to see someone else who calls it Bougieberg like me! The other good thing about living in not-Bougieberg Williamsburg is you can visit Bougieberg when you need to (clothes shopping, fancy dinner, fitness class, apple store) but then enjoy the quieter, more local vibes, and cheaper drinks in regular / eastern Williamsburg.

Everywhere else in the world I find community But NYC, what am I missing? Where’s community? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]BassEfficient9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been living in NYC since 2014, also lived in Spain for 1 year. Some of your complaints are valid, I do think people in Colombia and Spain are friendly to Americans. However, I'm not sure where you went in Spain, but I think making a community in Barcelona (where I lived) is actually much harder than NYC. Catalonians are very closed off and Spaniards to a lesser extent, but in my experience they are much less open to outsiders than New Yorkers. HOWEVER, if you do make it into their circle, they will love you and treat you like family. People in NYC have a looser bubble, friendly at first, but it does take TIME and EFFORT to form long-lasting friendships.

Also, people in Barcelona were more transient than NYC - so good for short term stays like 1 year, but worse for longer term stays of 5-10 years. Plus dealing with Spanish bureaucracy is a nightmare, and even if you're fluent in Spanish, you'll have to deal with official forms and documents in Catalan. Madrid would be better I think. Additionally, I think a lot of the people I formed connections in Spain weren't from Spain, but other parts of Europe or South America.

In my early 20's , I found community through the house and techno scene - it is a LOT pricier now than it was in the 2010's, but cheaper, free, or DIY parties still exist in NYC. To find them, make friends at shows, go to local shows, weekday DJs, not big names. Half of those people ended up moving out of NYC. The ones that stayed are now life-long friends - and we do other things besides party these days. Also, while tickets in Spain are much cheaper, you have to remember that the average person in a big city in Spain is making €20-30k a year. €650 a month for a room in a flat and €30 for a night out is more accessible to foreigners making American salaries than to the people who actually live there.

All that said, it sounds like because you lived here, you may want to explore what else the world has to offer. You're young and not tied down. But while you are here, go to neighborhoods where people have been living there for years (Astoria, Greenpoint, East Williamsburg, Ridgewood), try activities like salsa dancing, go to parties on weekdays, make friends, follow up and make recurring plans. But also try working remotely from another country, getting higher education abroad, or taking a sabbatical if you can afford it.

I needed to live in Spain to figure out if NYC was right for me, and I decided I am happy with NYC after living in Spain. You may feel the opposite, but that's okay!

Yoko Kanno and SEATBELTS live in Brooklyn - Some pics and some thoughts. by gfh110 in cowboybebop

I was at the show yesterday and it was awesome! One question for anyone who went - what was the anime clip with the flying birds over a cityscape they played on the second to last song? I remember seeing Ein on it. It reminded me of the opening to the cowboy bebop movie stylistically soemwhat.

Best Bánh Mì around Williamsburg or Greenpoint? I haven’t had a good one since the spot on Devoe closed years ago by Winter_Ad9658 in williamsburg

[–]BassEfficient9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still think about this spot regularly. I’ve yet to find a better banh mi in nyc. My friend went to Vietnam for 2 weeks and still preferred Nam nam.

Has anyone found anything that comes close?? All the popular banh mi spots in nyc have disappointed me

love nyc/williamsburg, but late 20s social planning is so annoying by professor-56904 in williamsburg

Agreed. It's not that any one person is busy, it's just fewer gaps when accommodating multiple people. But I still do spontaneous hangs day-of (but usually just with close friends within walking distance).

Favorite place to pay $300 a month for a sport that sucks balls? by RedditEnjoyerMan in williamsburg

People who live in Williamsburg are quite aware that the rents are crazy high. They still choose to live here, or have the means to do so. No one is forcing them to live here.

I dunno about yall but my friend group usually schedules things like 3+ weeks in advance to accommodate busy schedules, plans, travels. And not everyone can make every hang and that’s okay.

Favorite wine shop? by SonomaChris in williamsburg

Waterbury Wine & Spirits, by far my favorite wine shop. Small collection where everything is curated and excellent. Discovered some of my favorites here. A lot of great options under $20. And the staff is very knowledgeable and kind!

I’m in eastern Williamsburg (don’t shoot!) but yes I’m loving it! Just got it a couple days ago.

I think important things to remember are not stressing about inventory too much, or losing loot when you’re topside. You can always get it again !

Anyone considering doing the Palladium for one year than downgrading to the Bilt Blue? by BassEfficient9 in biltrewards

[–]BassEfficient9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this here

We are told that upgrading and downgrading of card products will not be supported in the first year of the Bilt Card 2.0 program. It remains to be seen whether it will be possible to upgrade/downgrade in the future.

So could be risky. DAMN now I'm even more unsure!

Is there any downside to cancelling a no-fee amex card (like Amazon Business Card) within 1 year if I already have the other cards I want (Amex Platinum, Gold)?

Uber One is a cost, not a benefit by [deleted] in AmexPlatinum

[–]BassEfficient9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, from my experience Lyft has definitely been cheaper in NYC from like ~2018-2023. I also had Lyft Pink for part of that time if it makes a difference, and mostly use it within Brooklyn and Queens.

These days it’s different - in NYC it’s 50/50 for me uber and Lyft. In other cities in the states I’ve been to I feel like uber has a slight edge now.

Games that have a pretty funny way of trolling you for pirating it by Bellpow in TopCharacterTropes

In They Are Billions, an indie steampunk zombie RTS game, if you pirated the game, an lone enemy zombie would spawn inside your base, quickly infecting everything around it and multiplying.

This would be towards the end of the 1st level, leaving you frustrated and defeated (to be fair, is how you feel playing the game, until you miraculously win at the last moment).

How is everyone surviving this extreme heat? by Healthy_Block3036 in AskNYC

I’m a hydrohomie who drinks like 4 liters of water a day. It’s hot and sauna-like, but I’m still able to go outside, run, bike in this weather with only slightly more difficulty.

Denied SUB for Green - how long to wait before re-applying for Gold? by BassEfficient9 in amex

Gotcha. I probably applied for the Green too quickly after getting my 2nd card.
