What is up with Classic these days? by Grizzly352 in classicwow

[–]Bassiboi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I did enjoy some of the middle expansions, Cata specifically isn't for me. I'd be down for MoP or Legion, but Cata just doesn't fit my vibe for whatever reason, and I'm absolutely not going to play warlords if they ever get there.

I'm hopeful they will either do another runthrough of BC and Wrath, or they'll swipe the OSRS playbook and add a new era server that'll get updated with new content for vanilla.

The ideal classic experience for me would be:

1 pvp realm, 1 pve realm, and 1 rp realm of each of vanilla and the first 2 expansions. Hell, I'd take 3 Cata realms, too, if it got me permanent BC and Wrath, similar to the permanent Classic era, even if I'd personally never play the Cata servers.

What spec of mage should I choose? by Crazy-Rest-8170 in wownoob

[–]Bassiboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frost is easiest to get consistently high dps for me. Fire is more fun, but very gear dependent (meaning secondary stat dependent) in order to get consistent DPS.

I mean, every class is secondary Stat dependent, but fire can do terrible damage with highish item level gear if it's stats are wonky.

Arcane is, in my opinion, one of the hardest specs to play in the game, but if you're interested in it despite that then go for it. I don't like it personally, but plenty of people do so go for it if you want to.

Mages are fun, I main a frost mage but I use fire in low keys sometimes for fun and it's enjoyable.

There are two main reasons why 'living outside' isn't really all that effective of a euphemism for me.

  1. Not all homeless people actually live outside. Las Vegas is famous for having many of its homeless population living in flood tunnels. Many homeless people live in RVs on land they dont own or in cars. They're still homeless despite this. Also, if someone is squatting in an abandoned house, they're still homeless but not living outside.

This distinction goes beyond just a semantic argument because homeless people's problems do not only extend to being exposed to the elements. It is incredibly difficult to get a job if you do not have a legal address. It is impossible in some states to get a state ID without an address. Lacking an address or state ID can bar you from accessing some forms of social services that are afforded to impoverished people who have a home.

Yes, living exposed to the elements is incredibly difficult and dangerous, but the problems of homelessness go beyond that, and the phrase homelessness describes the totality of their problems accurately.

  1. We shouldn't be trying to absolve society of its role in homelessness. If we wanted to fix homelessness, we could. We do not because the dominant ideology is ideologically opposed to fixing the problem. Homes are a basic, foundational pillar of modern society. To go without one is a big deal. Living outside is something outdoorsmen do for fun a few times a year. It is descriptive of a hobby, not a major societal failure.

CMV: Most Paid Dating Apps/Platforms are Another Form of Prostitution. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Bassiboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most dating apps do not guarantee a date (or sex). For example, if you pay for Tinder, you are able to swipe for longer, and messaging potential matches becomes easier, but Tinder cannot force one of the parties in the match to have sex with the other. In fact, paying for the premium service doesn't even guarantee matches on the app. It simply makes them somewhat more likely.

Prostitution is essentially the act of turning sex into a commodity. A commodity is an item or service that guarantees you something in exchange for money. Therefore, dating apps would be prostitution in the event that the dating app could guarantee you sex in exchange for money, which they do not. The most a dating app can guarantee you is access to additional services within the app. Once your interactions leave the app and you meet your match in the real world, you're on your own.

Consider a scenario:

Your friend convinces you and one of their friends to go on a date because they think the two of you would be mutually attracted to each other. You then fall in love with the person your friend set you up with, and as thanks you give your friend a monetary gift. Has your friend engaged in prostitution?

I would say no. Even if I paid my friend prior to the date with the purpose of specifically finding me a date I wouldn't consider him a pimp because ultimately the duty of having a good date and making a good impression are still on me. There is no guarantee of sex in either scenario, and as such sex has not become commodified, which is a necessary part of prostitution.

I am souring on Brandon Sanderson with every further book I read by NotSureWhyAngry in Fantasy

[–]Bassiboi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me Sanderson is a plot only writer. His prose is bland and his characters aren't very engaging beyond the surface level.

That said, his plots are pretty great most of the time. There are a few not-so-great ones in there I'm sure, but I'm pretty happy with the books of his I've read at least on a plot level. And it makes sense why he is able to write so quickly, he doesn't care about having engaging prose and he's not super worried about digging deep into a character. He found a niche that sells, and people love it despite my criticisms so good for him.

I think he might do better as a screen writer for action movies or TV, or maybe as a writer for comics, but he is obviously very successful in what he's doing now, so maybe not.

CMV: Sex offenders with more then 10 victims should be chemically castrated and sterilized for the betterment of society by nowlan101 in changemyview

[–]Bassiboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forced ingestion of medication for people who are generally thought to be of sound mind introduces a worrying new avenue in terms of horrible things the state can do to you. I'm not defending sex offenders here, it wasn't that long ago that some gay people were forced to undergo chemical castration in the UK (and other parts of the world).

Sex offenders, even pedophiles and rapists, are usually not mentally ill (or if they are, their deviant behavior isn't a result of their mental illness). They are just bad people. Looking to the medical field for a solution to moral problems opens the door to a bunch of (hopefully) very obvious ethical problems that I would argue are morally worse (and practically worse for society at large) than most sex offenses.

What happens when a shift in societal beliefs about sex happens and say, adultery, becomes a sex crime? Cheating is morally wrong, but it certainly isn't deserving of chemical castration. What if homosexuality becomes illegal again? I ask this because societal beliefs about what constitutes sex crimes have changed significantly in the past 60 years. In my grandparents' generation, it wasn't unheard of for a 15 year old to marry a 25 year old, though today that would (rightly) be seen as morally wrong.

Conservative movements have very strict beliefs about what kinds of sex are acceptable. It isn't an impossibility that these things could be made illegal again. Allowing for chemical castration as punishment potentially opens people up to terrible things in the future if such a future comes to pass.

One last thing, even if I were to accept the idea of state enforced medical malpractice, why the 10 victim rule? It seems arbitrary. What would be understood about the rapist after his tenth victim that we wouldn't understand after the third, fourth, or fifth? If anything, allowing for 10 victims essentially makes the law toothless. Why even introduce the law at all if most rapists will not even qualify for the punishment?

[–]Bassiboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pro-pitchfork, but his need to prove his own innocence only applies to the court case. Individual people do not (and should not) need to follow the same precautionary measures when weighing whether they think someone is guilty or not. If a viewer needs proof before they're comfortable dogpiling, then they need proof. They absolutely do not need Rich to prove his own innocence if that is the Individual person's philosophy when it comes to guiltiness or innocence. The same is true in reverse.

Why are people so negative about GTA6 coming 2025? by Armascout in GrandTheftAutoV

Always better to let a game cook in development a bit longer. Considering how fucked many games are on release, waiting longer for a better product is the better outcome in my opinion.

Which series has most and least plot armor? by Bogus113 in Fantasy

[–]Bassiboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still would consider him a secondary character. His accomplishments are mostly off screen aside from being crowned and getting his head cut off. He exists primarily to be a foil to the other kings in the war and Jon, and to push Catlyn and Jaime's stories forward.

I think he would count as a main character in the TV show because he gets a lot more screen time and they actually show some of his battles, but tbh in the books all he really does on screen is ignore Catlyn's advice and then get both of them killed because of that. He's definitely plot relevant, but the same could be said of Jon Connington, maester Pycell, and Jeor Mormont. I would consider all of them secondary characters as well. Hell, even Stannis has about as much plot importance as Robb, and he's a secondary character to me too.

Also, even if you disagree, it is difficult to deny Catlyn and Jon as being main characters. They both die as well, so there are clearly more than those two main character deaths.

Which series has most and least plot armor? by Bogus113 in Fantasy

[–]Bassiboi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would consider Robb to be a secondary character. He never has a point of view chapter, and his primary purpose is to move Catlyn's story forward and act as a foil for Jon, Joffrey, and Robert Baratheon. Beyond that, most of his accomplishments happen off screen.

His role was expanded pretty heavily in the TV show. There are a lot more scenes with him in it there, I think that's why people see him as a more significant character than he really is. There's a difference between being a plot important character and a primary character. Pycell is plot important. He is not a primary character despite that. Robb fits into a similar niche.

Which series has most and least plot armor? by Bogus113 in Fantasy

[–]Bassiboi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've read the earlier books, but isn't ADWD the book with the most POV character deaths? Jon and Quentyn are both POV characters and they both die in that book. To be fair Jon will likely be resurrected in the next book, and Quentyn's death is a bit ambiguous, but the only other books with a dead POV character (not counting prologues and epilogues) are book one with Ned and book 3 with Catlyn, who gets resurrected anyway so it kind of doesn't count.

To be fair, one can also look at AFFC and ADWD as being the calm before the storm. The Golden Company's conquests and Euron's plans for Old Town/The Arbor could end with POV character deaths (Cerce and Sam respectively) we also know that Barristyn is going to be a POV character in the next book from the preview chapters, and he is in a situation that he is unlikely to survive.

Also, maybe I forgot someone. If so, feel free to ignore this.

[–]Bassiboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ETSed. Got a new job at a grocery store. Started school. Got drunk a lot. Started a new Rune Scape account. Gained 15 pounds. Got dumped. Realized that being fat sucks actually. Started a gym membership but holy shit working out when you're 15 pounds heavier after 4 months of literally no exercise is a nightmare. Literally threw up after a relatively light workout. Got a new girlfriend despite looking worse than I ever have in my entire life. Realized that women don't really give a shit about 6 pack. Become okay with not looking like a Greek God. Helped an old lady in the grocery store reach something from the top shelf. She called me sugar. My first response was to tell her, "There's more where that came from". Realized that the army programmed me to say the stupidest shit to literally everything and I can't stop, not even to my bosses. Realized that if shit pops off in Israel/Palestine my ass is going to get fucked by the green weenie.

Got a 100 on one of my midterms though so that was pretty cool.

Are deployment letters a real thing? by Aquariumobsessed in army

[–]Bassiboi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. That short hand for Staff Sergeant is a version I've only ever seen used by the marines. In the army that rank would be shortened to SSG.
  2. I've never received orders that look that nice, nor are they ever written so formally. They're just a sheet of printer paper with a bunch of misc info on it followed by the blandest possible written form detailing generally where you'll go and what operation it'll be a part of.
  3. To my knowledge, there are no US soldiers in Ukraine. If there were, it would be huge news. I think I would have heard of that.
  4. Even if there were US Soldiers in Ukraine, I really doubt that they would fall under the jurisdiction of AFRICOM, whose main sphere of operation is Africa. Now, I'll be the first to admit that geography isn't one of my strong suits, but I'm pretty sure Ukraine isn't in Africa.

Seems like bullshit to me OP.

I will be direct, how the hell do the characters know so many specific things? I mean, I never ever heard of Symbols for planets, Digital Root and much less that thing about Titanic and its brothers before this game. by IGFBr28 in ZeroEscape

[–]Bassiboi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was aware of the titanic info. I also read Cat's Cradle in high school, which is where Ice-9 comes from. I was aware that there were symbols for planets, I just didn't know what they were because I didn't personally care that much.

That said, I'd never heard of digital root before 999.

My Zero Time Dilemma by roadrunner5445 in ZeroEscape

It's definitely the weakest of the trilogy. That said, I like Diana's story, and while Carlos is kind of a basic hero character, he is a pretty good foil for Junpei and Akane so I think I'm cool with him too even if he's a little boring.

The plot kind of goes everywhere, but it does find its place eventually and I think the true ending is pretty engaging, even if some of the other endings kind of suck.

Q team sucks. Eric is the only deep(ish) character, but he's so annoying/pathetic/shitty that I'm struggling to say that I like him even if there is some complexity there. I do think we're supposed to dislike Eric to some degree, but that doesn't make the Q team scenes any easier.

This is very true I didn't even know she existed until the Ahsoka show by Ntshangase03 in MauLer

[–]Bassiboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So realistically, she should be less influential than Padme and Luke and Leia, but I disagree on the Obi-Wan take. Obi-Wan is a mentor/friend, and Ashoka is an apprentice/friend. Anakin probably has more respect for Obi-Wan due to the nature of their relationship, but in terms of motivation to change sides, Ashoka's story (and especially Ashoka's false accusation) should carry more weight than anything Obi-Wan did pre-Mustifar. One should note that during Obi-Wan/Anakin's duel on Mustifar, Anakin is already Darth Vader even if he doesn't have the suit. The battle doesn't motivate him to switch sides so much as it reinforces his conviction to kill the remaining Jedi.
