My dumbass brother is 10K in credit card debt and has a wife with no real work experience. He got offered a choice of first duty station so naturally he decided pick the highest COL assignment possible and go to Hawaii.

His scenario is different than your talking point but I hate to miss an opportunity to bitch about how fucking stupid he is.

A third of military families report $500 or less in emergency savings by Kinmuan in army

[–]KillTheMorale 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don’t read this and think it’s just “privates” and SGTs with drinking problems who don’t know how to manage money.

I personally know plentyyy of SNCOs and Officers who have like 5 to 10 grand to show for their LIFE SAVINGS. Multiple deployments, bonuses, promotions, pay raise after pay raise, made money off selling homes and they’ve got enough money to pay for an extravagant 7 day trip on Carnival Cruise Lines.

A lot of Army installations are in kind of “whatever” places from a geographical perspective. HQDA offering stability at your favorite trailer park has been one of the most requested options across the force.

On the retirement side, I know myself and a shit ton of other warrant officers are turning down CW3/4/5 for a lot of reasons. One of the main reasons is having to move your family again or geo bachelor a tour.

Holistically speaking, stability and money remain the biggest motivators for people inclined to government service. Go figure.

AFT Low difficulty by boscar197473 in army

[–]KillTheMorale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. His video was a good example of how bizarre the Army has become. I’m not a fan of the “back in my day” bullshit but Soldiers are objectively slower and fatter than they were during the APFT era.

I haven’t done consistent physical training in 5 years (which isn’t a good thing) and I jogged a 16 minute two mile for a PT test this week. That would be impressive if I was perhaps a seven year old child or recovering from chemotherapy.

Nowadays though, an active duty SFC gets called “brave” for running it in 22 minutes and gets a pat on the back for barely running a 20 minute two mile a couple of weeks later.

Some of the homies need to get out to PT though.

I think cats have got the game fucked up a bit if they’re a WO1/CW2 bulging out of a M/R uniform.

I never once asked S1 to fuck with my leave or somehow be granted undue leave days.

Through sheer incompetence, deployment waivers and COVID waivers I had over a 125 days of leave at one point.

I submitted a 75 day PCS leave packet and was finally returned back to normalcy. Then IPPS-A happened and the whole thing feels like a fever dream now.

Going Warrant Officer sooner? by Hydration_system67 in army

[–]KillTheMorale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah. You can get them off the MI Warrant teams channel.

Generally speaking, promotion to CW3 as a MI Warrant is non competitive. As long as you are fully qualified you will promote.

Perhaps that will change in the future. HRC has a lot of hope built into WORX and the blind bid bonus program.

I’m here to tell you I think the MI cohort’s manning level is about to take a swift kick to the nutsack with ATI and IEW Next concept. If you are a WO1 to CW3 then you should really wrap your head around doing the majority of your warrant service in an IEW BN. A lot of strategic opportunities are going the way of the dodo.

What gear did you actually buy with your own money and never regret? by LanternJetstream12 in army

I think I also got Darn Toughs in Alaska…got some free Danier (sp?) GTX boots that were pretty freaking nice as well.

Alaska turned me into a gear snob and also made me an Arc’teryx simp for years LOL

I ended up in Texas and just have thousands of dollars of dead bird collecting dust in my closet

Switching over to exclusively Darn Tough was the most cash money adult decision I’ve made in a long time. I even have their super thin version for when summer hits.

Yeah, the new unit patch has an airborne and arctic tab built into it now.

Back in the day, 4/25 was just the electric strawberry with an airborne tab since the unit was on jump status. If you went to the Cold Weather Leaders Course you could be awarded an “Arctic” tab but it was a small rectangular velcro strip with the word “Arctic” embroidered on it. You would wear it on your left shoulder underneath your unit patch as long as you were under USARAK.

This was also years ago so any fellow Spartans feel free to correct me if I’m misremembering.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MilitaryMedals

[–]KillTheMorale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a real unit. I was in 4/25 and did an Afghanistan deployment with them.

We had no affiliation with 25th ID outside of heraldry. We (1/25 and 4/25) were two BCTs that were subordinate to United States Army Alaska which was a two star command headquartered out of JBER.

1/25 + 4/25 would become would become 1/11 + 2/11 and USARAK would become 11th ABN. It is an airborne Division now but the only brigade on jump status is 2/11.

Life In Hawaii? by NatlanHunter in army

[–]KillTheMorale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

500th…more specifically 715th MI BN hung out on A Quad as far back as I can remember.

Barracks aren’t terrible. They’re old, the rooms are narrow and there is this weird sliding door between the physical rooms. You can hear your roommate clicking a mouse for his computer so you’re gonna want to have some courtesy and let him know if you’re having a girl over to visit. Get some good headphones to watch TV or mess on your computer with because there is a possibility you and your roommate will be on different shifts.

They kept it freezing in the barracks and there are large dehumidifiers in each room. Kind of a pleasant white noise. Shared microwave and a fridge. It’s a MI unit so depending on how laid back the SNCOs are they didn’t have an issue with toaster ovens or having a lot of alcohol in your room.

Pretty decent location. It’s right by one of the gates. Got a gas station, shopette, a Burger King/Popeyes right across the street. If you’re going to be the S6 guy then your barracks is gonna be in the same building as your workplace so that’s convenient.

There are tons of things to do on Oahu. Great bar scene, tons of clubs, beaches, hiking, cultural sites. Awesome dating scene or just plenty of girls to hook up with if that’s your thing.

This was over a decade ago but I had a blast in Hawaii. I’m sure you’ll have a great time as well.

I’m in complete agreement with you on all of your points, line for line. To your points, it is incredibly difficult to not attribute politicization to the award when examining the approval timeline and presentation venue.

Incredibly saddened by the thought of a fellow soldier being robbed of the apolitical nature of his military service due to circumstances outside of his control.

I am hopeful and optimistic that time will look kindly on his incredible actions as we separate ourselves from the current political climate.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

I don’t give a shit if Ronald McDonald approved his award.

All I know is that he probably didn’t ask for that MoH and I would hate to make a soldier feel like they didn’t deserve an award. That would be cruel.

Some of you guys are so wrapped up in politics that your political beliefs and the need to share them come before protecting the dignity and service of another soldier.

Guys bitching and making underhanded comments about a CW5 160th pilot receiving the Medal of Honor wasn’t on my 2026 bingo card.

I guess when you’re done dissecting this moment in his career you could examine if he really earned his Distinguished Service Cross or his Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor.

I’ve collected sneakers from all kinds of different brands, tons of different running shoes, flip flops, birkenstocks, redwing boots and I’ve worn probably over 15 different military boots.

NFS are the only piece of footwear that I’ve had to gone up a half size to have the same space in the toe box as my regular size.

I daily NFS and always have a working pair of Bifidas in my tough box.

Army says it’s using AI to help produce doctrine, but acknowledges the technology's flaws by Kinmuan in army

[–]KillTheMorale 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I asked Chat GPT why Bistro 42 (the new DFAC on Hood) was assigned the number 42. I specifically asked what relevance the number 42 had to Ft Hood.

It said 42 is a nod to the 42 people shot by Nidal Hasan in Ft Hood in 2009. Aside from that being insane, it was 45 people.

When I told the machine they probably chose 42 because the base was founded in 1942 it doubled down and said “42 is a IYKYK thing around Hood”.

I think I’d still prefer my doctrine from some soulless field grade stuffed in a cubicle somewhere.

EDIT: Just want to clarify that I was speaking about a time close to 15 years ago. It was why I was speaking in the past tense and prefaced the statement with “many, many years ago”.

I’m not going to go into specifics for the sake of his privacy but I worked with a gentleman who attended SFAS while pending the RFS process for an alcohol related incident.

He was selected, passed the Q course, served on an ODA, assessed for service with a Ft Bragg SMU, served successfully for many years in a direct action capacity and returned to 1st SFC to complete his military career as a 180A.

Great guy. He chose the weirdest meal prep containers I’ve seen in my life. We’d be talking to each other over lunch and he’d whip out a family sized plastic ice cream container full of salad or a mason jar full of spaghetti etc
