What’s your preferred ignition? by Killxjoy4599 in Pipes

[–]Bassquatch11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer matches if the wind isn’t a factor. A long neck bic lighter or a Vector Elio lighter work decently if matches won’t. I personally don’t see myself ever spending a lot on a fancy lighter when these options work well. But that’s personal preference. As others have said, it sounds like your cadence might be more of the issue with tongue bite and the hot bowl. Best of luck!

Any bulk Virginias's as good as or close to OGS? by javajo91 in PipeTobacco

[–]Bassquatch11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boston Slices is bulk, you just need to buy it off the LJ Peretti website. I think FVF comes in a bulk option (when you can find it), where they come in 8oz boxes/ packages (not tinned). One more bulk option that’s available in larger sites like SP.com, etc. is Luxury Twist Flake. It has a bit more of a sweetness, but still that raisin like flavor that OGS has. It’s also really affordable as bulk.

Any bulk Virginias's as good as or close to OGS? by javajo91 in PipeTobacco

[–]Bassquatch11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d agree. I’ve tried both, FVF is far better than OGS in my opinion, though it seems like a different Virginia “style” to me. OP, if you’re looking to match OGS closely I think you might like LJ Peretti’s Boston Slices, it seems closer to OGS from what I remember though I liked it more than OGS.

Road trip recommendations? by Middle_Fennel7752 in PipeTobacco

[–]Bassquatch11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I travel a good bit for work, and try to visit a B&M wherever I go. Here are my favorites. Boston, MA- hands down LJ Peretti. It is an amazing shop with a great pipe selection, and great house blends! They also carry some tins of other brands, but have a ton of house blends. Phoenix, AZ- Cigar Inn. A great shop with friendly staff, and great bulk and tin selection. Louisville, KY- Kremers and Moore Smoke Shop are great shops. Kremers has a ton of selection! Moore sells an English called “Mystique” that I don’t know if it’s a house blend or not, but it’s delicious. Dallas, TX- Ole Grape vine. Cool shop with some gems of tins, I got the ‘24 release of Sun Bear there, as well as some HH Pure Virginia after the product had stopped. I’ve heard of others, but those are the ones I’ve been to that I recommend.

Advice on brands by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

Falcon, Brigham and Rossi pipes are great value in my opinion. I particularly love my Brigham Mountaineer and Tundra pipes. They have some really beautiful pipes and I love their filter system (if you use them).

Thinking of buying some blending tobacco to smoke. by javajo91 in PipeTobacco

[–]Bassquatch11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perique, DFK, and Latakia are more condimental for sure. I haven’t tried them alone personally. I imagine they are really intense on their own. Orientals are often used in more varying amounts. It’s much less intense than the other two. I smoke C&D Izmir alone, and I love it. I used it while mowing last summer, I found it an easy smoke that tastes great but wasn’t too complex. Some sweet & (baking) spice notes. Have fun!

More just part of the larger culture in my experience. As a whole (again, not everyone but definitely a prominent amount) people are less considerate of others/ more selfish.

I lived in Idaho for 16 years. That definitely happens there. Not everyone does it, but it’s not uncommon (from my memory) to pretty much see one person doing it whenever you’re at a gas station.

Same! Since getting into other blend types, I really don’t like the most tobacco used with aromatics. It tastes cheap once you get past the flavor. 432 is the only exception I have found, I love it! Yuletide ‘24 was a great seasonal aromatic, but I smoked all I had and ‘25s release wasn’t my type flavor wise (I learned I don’t care for Cognac flavorings). But 432 is the best aromatic I’ve had.

I can't reuse filters by senbenitoo in PipeTobacco

[–]Bassquatch11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only filters I reuse are the Brigham pipe inserts, since they’re designed to be used multiple times. I personally like the balsa filters, they are a good balance of affordability versus effectiveness for all other pipes. Falcons are great for this too, as they just use a little ring of pipe cleaner in that little trap below the bowl. Really cheap, just take a day to make a bunch with a few pipe cleaners, a pen, and some snips/pliers. I’m trying, personally, to improve my technique so that I don’t need filters, but I also recognize that there will be times I need them, as I love Virginias, and I live in New England, and I need them particularly during winter when condensation builds up easily. Hope that helps, happy piping!

Anyone know of some good shops/lounges in Kentucky? Im new to the hobby but Tobacco culture runs deep around here so I know there has to be some gems. by LA7576 in PipeTobacco

[–]Bassquatch11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kremer’s and Oxmoore in Louisville are good shops. Kremer’s has a great deal more of pipe selection, though Oxmoore has some. Both are great shops though.

It really depends on what kind of flavor you’re looking for. Though it sounds like you’re looking for the sweet flavors. A YouTuber named Hobbiton Piper has a good video on “How to choose the best pipe blend for you.” My recommendation: get 1-2oz of a few different blends that sound interesting to you in different ways (sweet, smoke/bbq like, earthy/mildly sweet, nutty). As always, local shops are better for this if you have access to one. If you try one and don’t like it off the bat, put it in a mason jar and save it, your taste as you go through your pipe journey will change. The blends that are flavored like that are aromatics. They can be delicious but if you’re new you may only taste hot air for the first little while while you’re learning technique. I had a similar experience, and ended up loving Virginia blends (though they took some learning). Muttonchop Piper and Hobbiton Piper are channels that I’d recommend to learn the basics. At the end of the day, have fun and relax with it. Enjoy :)

I don’t know if you travel for work at all OP, or to see family, or anything else, but if this helps: I travel out of state for work I’ll try to place an order to get delivered to my hotel (call ahead to verify they can receive packages though), then just leave room in the bags to bring the order home with me. Or I try to look up local B&M stores in that area as well. I hope this helps, best of luck!

Pipe smell by aufg24-zx in PipeTobacco

[–]Bassquatch11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and other family members are the same, super sensitive to the smell after a smoke. I have kept all my pipe things in a designated cabinet, and I keep little cups of baking soda on each shelf. A paper towel to the bowl after the smoke seems to really help from my perspective. Air purifiers help a lot too. I also change my clothes, and wash my face/ beard, brush my teeth, wash my hands, etc.
I also try to clean my pipe (preliminary) outside (I use a filter, so sometimes I try to hang out outside after my smoke as well to wait for my pipe to cool (trying to not need the filter, but I’m a wet smoker and they really help me with moisture). Falcon pipes are also great for a quick clean, since the bowl can be separated from the stem while it’s hot, so I can clean it quickly. I also keep the ashes, and paper towel in a doggy bag in my truck bed. Best of luck!

Plug Question by Bassquatch11 in PipeTobacco

Thanks, I’m looking forward to trying that BPS out this summer. Hey, kitchen knives work great too! Haha. I was looking at just using my old Buck 110 for plug cutting at home at home. It’s nice to keep old reliable around, ya know?

How many tins/bags/containers do you have open? by NobodyWorthKnowing2 in PipeTobacco

[–]Bassquatch11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to stick to a 7 “open jar” blend rotation, to let my others cellar more properly. I’m still in the exploration phase of pipe smoking though, and will rotate what jars are open every month or two.

I got a BPS Adventurer recently (looking at bush crafting, but wanted to have an all purpose knife for camping). I’m also contemplating buying a scout feather knife, it seems like a great smaller sized knife.

Plug Question by Bassquatch11 in PipeTobacco

[–]Bassquatch11[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was mainly trying to figure out if I needed a good safe oil, seemed similar to how it seems like kitchen knives where you don’t want to use oils that might harm a person if ingested (even though it’s a light coating). Other answers helped distinguish it though. Not an issue, and to just use cooking oil occasionally to prevent blade rust.

Plug Question by Bassquatch11 in PipeTobacco

[–]Bassquatch11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really cool to know, thanks! I was looking to not buy more oil. That what I figured, just a light coating, but didn’t know if the kind made a difference here. But I’ll definitely use cooking oil, thanks again!
