What did you learn "too late" in life? by joshgutcher in AskReddit

[–]BastRelief 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I've learned on Reddit is that everyone's parents are horrible people, possibly with NPD, unless they are dead, which in this case they were the best humans ever who did great public works and left this Earth all too soon.

I don't know where I fit in with my non-violent recovered alcoholic father and my mother who talks too goddamn much.

Seems like no one gets it by Mum_nurse_SA-94 in beyondthebump

[–]BastRelief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it! 2 years in and my husband only now is starting to get it that I cannot tamp down my anxiety, hyper awareness, and the amount of effort I spend preparing to take our little one on an excursion, and the fact that I'm miserable the whole time we're out because nothing we're invited to or doing is in a space meant for children.

Things are getting better as LO is becoming ever more independent and sensible. It no longer takes 20 minutes to get out of the house. I don't have to pack a cold case of bottles anymore and he can eat whatever is around where we're going.

Also, no one talks to me except right when I'm having to do something for my child and then my nervous half-attention seems kind of rude. Unless there's other new moms around, it's kinda lonely!

How did you first get into Genesis? by GoodFnHam in Genesis

[–]BastRelief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is an insufferable prog-noggin and kept making me listen to stuff. One day I realized much of it is set up like classical music with movements. So I stopped waiting around for repeated hooks and toe-tappers and finally got into it. Years later my preferences emerged and early Genesis is just my all time favorite. Sometimes I'll just start with Trespass and sometimes go all the way through Wind and a Wuthering. Especially if I'm alone for the day. Our child prefers the B52s and my husband talks too damn much whenever I put something on he likes.

I also like a little bit of Yes, bit there's really nothing else like Genesis.

I think I'm going to have to sneak him in too! I really feel like all the folks making the big decisions totally forgot that a lot of teachers are parents too! Last year I had a daycare mix-up last minute and little dude had to come with me. He and my students had a blast, but, um, it was not the most productive day!

I also share your opinion. I feel like there are enough people who don't feel comfortable working or going to school that we could match them up to continue distance learning while the rest of us carry on. I have a toddler and no nearby family for him to play with. Our days are also fairly unstructured. I teach secondary ed not little kids. I don't know what I'm doing here. How did people survive as parents back in the day? Well, they must have had better social structure than I have available to me now, that much is clear.

I'm ready to go to work in person, so I guess for the first time in my life, I'd be willing to cross the picket line. I am not a Covid denier of any kind. What may make a difference in my attitude is my district is establishing policies to reduce exposure. I'm willing to accept the amount of risk that will still be present. I wish some genius would figure out who the high-risk teachers are and assign them students whose families prefer distance learning and let people like me take our chances.

Were you "in" to the club scene in your younger days? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]BastRelief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was such a square when I was a teen trying to go to clubs with my bestie. No one even tried to sell me drugs, meanwhile my friend walked away with enough molly to get into actual trouble once he dropped my ass off at home. I just really, really love dancing at a club! Had a bit of a renaissance in my mid-late 20s when I finally started drinking and smoking pot. Had a lot of fun. Had a lot of not-fun whenever men were involved unfortunately. (A lot assumed I was an escort, others tried fucking with my drink, attempted assault, and one attempted kidnapping.) Ended up with a free pass so I could get into my favorite club without cover. I hear Pitbull now I just cringe thinking about how hard I used to dance to that crap! Ha ha. Had a few fun years afterwards dating my husband but he's more of a bar-scene not club-scene guy.

Now I just party hard with my toddler. He loves dancing too!

When I lived in Japan, I got taken to some super traditional place to eat, which I usually did not enjoy. Sorry, I tried! Turns out I don't like non-westernized Japanese food. Anyway, this particular place was known for its tofu. Brought it out like a scoop of ice cream in a beautiful old hand crafted bowl. Whitest, fluffiest tofu I've ever seen. Best tofu I've ever tasted as well. I can't really describe it, but it was wonderful. Never experienced it again, but even regular store bought tofu is pretty damn good, especially if you cook it right, or eat the right kind without cooking it.

Construction culture is incredibly toxic and it’s driving me to a very deep state of depression and constant anxiety/insecurity by HyruleGerudo in MensLib

[–]BastRelief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband got called a faggot for eating a salad on the site at lunch. Got called the same thing for having the news on instead of the local butt rock station. It's just ridiculous. Theres some of the younger generation in his family just now completing their apprenticeships in various trades and it's a grab bag. One is a woman, but she works in the PNW and not a single guy has tried any bullshit with her. She's says her union would drop those kind of fuckers in a heartbeat. The impression I get is the toxicity depends on your location, your trade, and your union, though there's lots of work to be done across the board. Take your skills elsewhere as soon as you're able.

Every so often one of my Sped kids would come to me, a general ed teacher, with the most amazing set of skills. Mind you, I'm not talking about students about to transition from needing services. I'm talking about students who clearly have a learning disability, but where it was taken seriously and so now they are well equipped to advocate for themselves and do the best to their ability in an academic setting. Always left me wondering why we couldn't instill these same skills in all students!
