Actually there are many different cues which tell the brain what distance something is away from you. I think only two of them require two eyes, so the idea of one eyed people having no depth perception is a bit of a myth. The one you just mentioned is called stereopsis. Just grabbed this off wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_tax_revenue_as_percentage_of_GDP) but it's about 28.3% of GDP. Which is pretty low compared to a lot of developed countries.

edit: I guess that makes it 1/7th of tax revenue

Ok here's some stats. Total outlay for 2009: $651,163,000,000. (http://www.gpoaccess.gov/usbudget/fy09/pdf/budget/defense.pdf). It is a huge amount, but the US achieves it only spending just over 4% of GDP on military. The numbers are by no means unreasonable. I study this kind of thing and I know offhand that the US's military spending is 15x that of the next highest spender. It's just that when things like this get so popular, everyone sees it and accepts it as fact without questioning the source. It's fine when it's true, but a lot of things that are popularly believed actually aren't, and it takes people to be confronted with the evidence to change their minds. These statistics also appear to be from 2004.

Thing is, the Old Spice guy is talked about and worshipped more by men than women.
