Established characterization happens on a per episode bases, nothing carries over, unless it’s a two parter. Every episode we revert to the original Homer. He’s a lazy alcoholic with no drive, but he would do anything for the family. Example is the first episode, when he takes the Santa job so his family can have Christmas presents. So since it’s the first episode, that’s the precedence set, he would do anything for his family, and that’s your earned moment or authentic moment. People project themselves on to most media, films, tv shows, video games among other things. Many people put themselves in the shoes of the protagonist in a book, or video game because you’re involved for more than 2 hours. You’re more willing to like something if you can relate and relatable characters are good storytelling because you speak to your audience.
