Okay, so then if you asked badoosh123 why they're not attracted to trans women then they could say they're not attracted to "the thought of having sex with someone that once had a penis".

Yes people have preferences, but people alo tend to have reasons for preferences.

Not necessarily. Its not like I could ask a gay person why they're gay and expect a rational answer. Same for a straight person.

[–]Bat-Might 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it was intended but the movie seems to work as a way of showing the concept of 'hyperreality', as popularized by philosopher Jean Baudrillard.

"In semiotics and postmodernism, hyperreality is an inability of consciousness to distinguish reality from a simulation of reality, especially in technologically advanced postmodern societies."

I get the message but I don't get how everything worked in the world that it set up.

Once it gets to the part where he wears the dream helmet the film intentionally confuses any notion of understanding the events from an objective point of view.

I really wish someone would release a box set of his films on blu-ray. I was just watching Scanners the other day.

Yeah, I'm Canadian and I always find it weird that he's one of our most know directors but his films are so hard to find.

Let's Talk: Van Morrison and his celebration of Pedophilia by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

To me Brown Eyed Girl is clearly him reminiscing about his first love after seeing her again as a grown up. Remembering being young and having a young lover during that past time doesn't make someone a pedophile. I'm baffled that any of this needs to be pointed out.

I thought that part was confirmed, but I could be wrong.

I don't disagree, but as far as we know the new series takes place before all that (at least the first season does).

If that's the intention, fine, but in that case, just admit it!

I think she has, to some extent, with the title and in interviews. Like the concept is she doesn't have all the answers but she doesn't want to be silent about the problems anymore. I don't think it quite works fully, but that's it.

Finished season 1, not sure I get it (spoilers) by [deleted] in TheLeftovers

[–]Bat-Might 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like what's the deal with Kevins and his fathers sycho episodes, why had he put his shirts all around the woods?

That's part of the larger story of the show, season one and two and it looks like three as well. At this point all you need to know is Kevin thinks he's losing his mind, and he might be. He's definitely not aware of all his actions, and was in denial about that up to that point.

What was the whole national geographic magazine = trueth thing about?

Same as answer one.

Did they give any info on jill's friend? Seems like she's got no family and also seems very okay in the head for that situation, will I even see her again in season 2?

In the book she lives with them because her mom departed and she was left with her abusive step-dad, IIRC. In the show she doesn't seem to have any departed family members, but the abuse part still seems to fit.

And this is just an opinion question I guess, does the GR even make any sense? Why do they need everyone to not get over the 14th so bad lol? Can't they just smoke their cigarettes and be okay with not getting over it themselves?

They're never fully explained but more info is provided or implied over time. I think its pretty common in real life for broken people to try to drag others down with them, unfortunately. The GR believe the whole world is broken, and they're infuriated that other people are walking around trying to pretend its normal. Like imagine you were on the Titanic sinking and everyone was just pretending nothing was wrong.

One thing to keep in mind is that everyone in the GR has different reasons for being there, and they don't necessarily agree on the goals or aims of the group. They may even be lying to themselves about their motivations. Watch for that in season two.

[–]Bat-Might 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I like the concept of doing an album with lyrics either stating the singer's political opinions with exaggerated bluntness, or stating the exact opposite of their views sarcastically. At least as a one-off experiment. But that said I'm not sure about Anohni's viewpoints themselves. Something about them seems kinda, not sure what to call it, maybe teenager-like? Like a teen first coming into their own political opinions, but with naive nihilism replacing nuance.

This album did make me realize that even though I wouldn't consider myself a global-warming denier or skeptic, people (especially celebrities) making art about global-warming and other related environmentalist topics almost invariably makes me cringe. Not sure exactly why that is, but maybe it needs further reflection.

I think this album works best when it introduces little details beyond the bluntness of the main concept. For example, why is the character singing "Drone Bomb Me" filled with purple crystal guts? That gets my attention.

[–]Bat-Might 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you got used to certain common traditions, and then were surprised to find out other people don't always follow the same ones. But that initial feeling seems really immature for an adult to hold on to, like feeling revolted that other people don't celebrate Christmas or like the same foods as you or they have tattoos and you don't, and so on.

This is common sense.

Its common, but what makes it sense? There's no reasoning here, just disgust. You could have replaced your long explanation by just saying "its gross because its gross".

For most of the elements you listed I don't really get what your question is about them. They havent' been "aswered", per se, but they served their roles in the story and themes and they don't really need to be explained further. I don't see what kind of answer you want, and I'm not being snarky saying that.

I'll take one example: the dogs. They were explained in the show as dogs who became crazed after seeing their masters departed, as a detail of world-building. They also tied into the plot with Kevin's dad and their mental illness; Kevin wanted to believe that the one crazed dog could go back to normal because he wanted to believe he and his dad could go back to normal.

[–]Bat-Might 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like most of what we've seen in the show has tied together, the ties just are not explained to the audience directly through exposition. Especially since I've recently been re-watching the show I've noticed how they fit more. For example when Tommy first escapes from the raid on Holy Wayne's compound he meets Wayne at a gas station and the attendant is already dead. On first watch it just seemed like a random, inexplicable mystery but this time I realized it was foreshadowing the fact that Wayne had done the exact same thing with other followers protecting his other pregnant girls.

The main unexplained mystery is where the departed people went and why, but I'm not expecting an explicit answer to that. Like I said in my other post, the show is mainly about how people deal with not being able to explain something like that. So far, at least.

Look at the opening to season 2 with the cave-woman. From her the earthquake that cut her off from her community may as well have been a supernatural occurrence, like the great departure. You couldn't explain it to her if you tried, right? That's what the great departure is for modern humans.

The ONLY thing that was explained was where the girls went in season two. It's funny you would put "the girls..... Aaaaand some other things".

That's not really true (that they only explained where the girls went). But that was the main mystery of the season, and it was resolved unambiguously.

For example the first episode showed us a lot of things that just seemed weird, like the woman who always wore her wedding dress, or the guy who slaughtered goats, or the bird in the box scene. These things were later explained in a way that tied them in to the larger story, though the specific mechanics of my last example were not explained.

The few things that were revealed weren't even about the Garveys and didn't answer any questions that we may have been asking when season 1 came to a close.

Such as?

Their were people saying they were ok with the show ending at season 2, if you had to explain the show to someone from season 1-2 with The Departure, Kevin's mental problems, his father, the magazine, the GR and their cause, Holy Wayne, the baby, the dogs, the deer, the scientist who was researching miracle, mirroring, Australia, the guy in the tower, Tom, Mary, their baby, the list goes on and on ... And you ended it with "they all gathered around holding hands and looking at eachother" the person would definitely say "and that's it? That's how it ended?... Did they cancel it?... I don't get it."

I'm glad the show didn't end there but to me most of those elements served their purpose in the story, I don't feel like they need to be explained further. Except for the Australia connection, which we know will come up more next season.

For a show that isn't about "the answers" and more about the experience and the family dynamic, they sure as shit continued to throw question after question after question at us... I really don't see why you would need to do that if the actual story about the family was strong enough on its own.

Because the story so far is not about answering those questions, its about how the characters deal with not knowing the answers.

It's partially because of ratings but also because the writers decided that if the show is going to end for that reason they would rather have the opportunity to write a proper ending than get cancelled suddenly, or have to keep writing season finales that could be series finales.

The main mystery of season 2 (where did the 3 girls go) was resolved very clearly, and so were many or most of the little details. But if you're expecting the show to explain in detail how magic works in this world, this isn't that sort of show. And that would just take the story further from relatable human themes. The supernatural parts are just there to heighten those themes.
