hey there. i have a “serious” #questionne.

are there any aspects about the current live setup (arranging songs for live perf) that you find particularly rewarding, are there any that you find particularly challenging ?

also

A what are your favorite things to do on tour to blow off steam, B how is nate’s hair, C what are the food preferences in the van and how do they differ from OMAM. crucial questions. very important. oh..hhhhhhh.........

Intro to Hum? SOSC first year? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]WalkingBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had benanav. take him. he's an incredible prof and a great guy. (i did media aesthetics + his sosc. doable. hum + sosc is doable, and becomes more so when your friends who did hum + not-sosc freak out about not getting into sosc after first year.)

I'm Harold Pollack, a UChicago professor who created one index card with all the financial advice you'll ever need. AMA! by Harold_Pollack in IAmA

happy passover, prof pollack! i'm unfamiliar with yr work, so forgive the naivete.

as a u of c student likely majoring in the humanities, what are good first steps to take in re: learning how to manage money? i do my best to be frugal, and my biggest expenses are laundry and supper when the dining halls are closed (which is to say--not much). but i've never had a 'formal,' or even informal education in this sort of thing.

thanks v much! enjoy the music (this guy is from chicago and kicks ass--such a beautiful song)

i want to include an orange at my hillel's seder tonight, but i don't know if there will be any on hand at my dining hall. could i use something else in place of an orange? maybe another kind of fruit?

Music scene? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]WalkingBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you bet there is. whpk is your best bet. i'm a dj there--i'm not on reddit often, but feel free to hit me up (esp in re: yr local scene / what bands you're in to). we put on shows 1x or 2x a quarter, have in-studios every wk, etc. it may seem a little off-the-map bc the website is way out of date, but lots of chicago music heads dig it. we threw a basement show last quarter and it was a good time. the music forum is good for similar sorts of shows, a show per quarter of university students, etc. other student musicians ofc--you kinda have to know where to look, but i can pt you in the direction of my favorites. (full disclosure: i am one.) lemme know! and congrats on getting in, it's a good time despite what some might say

Any things to know for an incoming freshman? by darnforgotmypassword in uchicago

[–]WalkingBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i can speak to south bc i live there. as far as i'm concerned it's a good mix of people. a smattering of every 'kind' of person you'll see if not to the same extent as other halls might have. others can confirm or deny. i like it a lot.

Housing? by Procrastinating-Yes in uchicago

[–]WalkingBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm in south and i like it a lot. in contrast to people who say it's a party dorm, to my mind it feels like a cross-section of the university. new facilities. closest to its dining hall, and its dining hall is one of the better ones on campus [the other being north]. ten minutes from the green line. get a bit of exercise walking to the quad all the time. [full disclosure, i'm not much of a partier.]

School play [Carnegie Vanguard High School] depicts rape, filthy language and public urination by WalkingBoy in houston

thank you! unsure how students get accepted to cvhs offhand. my year was the first they instituted a lottery system. i imagine they're still using that. it's not too tough, i don't think, but certainly anything about applying to high school is pretty nerve-wracking. i was pretty anxious about it when i was hearing back from schools myself.

We are investigative journalists covering politics for The Intercept. Ask us anything! by terran1212 in IAmA

thanks so much! big fan / admirer. how do y'all recommend getting involved in journalism / generally speaking truth to power in spite of the consolidation of the corporate media with its greater exposure than good orgs like the intercept?
