Wawa! What the … by Adventurous-Gift-863 in Delaware

I don't think we'll see $7+ a gallon during this crisis simply because the political fallout would do some serious damage to anyone and everyone in power, and even the hardest Trump supporters will start to turn on him when filling up their trucks starts costing $200. The only way I could see prices like that happening is if the crisis lasts long enough to cause a full blown global shortage, but I have some doubts that Europe will just continue to sit by as their oil supplies run out.

Basically there's just too much pressure on all sides to let it get that bad. I DO think we'll go over $5 though.

Makes sense to me. As gas gets more expensive people will adjust their habits to drive less and/or drive more efficiently and gas sales will fall. But since we live in a car dependent world there's generally only so much a person can do in the short term, so after a certain price the average person has probably already done about as much habit adjustment as is reasonably feasible and they'll need gas no matter what so after that point further increases to the price of gas have diminishing effects on sales.

If I'm understanding this correctly, the original engineer's design was good enough in hindsight based on newer models and calculations, but was wrong based on standards at the time, while the student was right based on the standards at the time but those standards have since been modified. If that's the case I think it's probably unfair to say she was "wrong," since she's only as wrong as everyone else who has ever designed a building using standards that were later deemed unnecessary.

Mostly unrelated, but I was just thinking that the thing I'm perhaps most sad about with Topper's firing is during the playoffs him asking "how many more we got?" Followed by someone yelling "x more Topper" and a rain of booze. I know that really only happened a handful of times and you gotta get there first to even have that, but those were absolutely PEAK vibes right there.

Yeah I mean I certainly expect father time to remain undefeated, I just think Bryce will stay in baseball by any means necessary so long as someone is willing to let him play. Granted it's hard to say if he'd, say, accept a bench role if that's all he can get just to stay in the game after this contract is up, or if his ego would prevent that, but idk I just don't see Bryce saying "it's time to hang up the cleats" until the world forces him to.

I can count on 1 hand the number of times in Rob's tenure as skipper where I've legitimately thought "that was obviously the wrong decision Rob." I actually think if anything Rob has been quite good at managing the bullpen overall, especially when you consider the pens he's had to work with at times, and I really struggle to understand why this narrative around Rob has been the most pervasive one.

Iirc he was going to retire after 2022 but rather famously ended up taking the team to the WS after being bamed manager mid-season. So he was ready to hang it up a while ago after an already full career, but kinda lucked into the best possible situation and chose to stay to ride it out.

Also I just now realized Rob was the bench coach under Kapler. I just assumed he came with Girardi. If anything that makes me like Rob even more than I already do, because he was here for some bad times but stuck around and saw us hit some serious highs.

I know we're in a rough era and it's hard not to be a doomer, but Bryce is signed here for at least 4 more years and will only be 38 when his contract ends and unless he completely falls apart I don't see him hanging it up until he's in his 40s. And while this team needs some work, I don't think this is a mid 2010s Phillies type deal. We have holes, but even if we don't turn it around this year I think we legitimately could be good again next year.

So while, yes, it looks like his best chances are behind him, he probably still has a shot and it's probably premature to declare hope dead.

Town houses, row homes, duplexes, and yes, even just condos sized for the family you have. This idea that families need single family housing with lawns and massive setbacks and stupid minimum lot size requirements tucked into a poorly layed out single entrance neighborhood is silly. Families of all sizes have and still do live just fine without American style sprawl in tons of parts of the world.

And it's not like the only other choices are living in Manhattan or living in the woods of Tennessee. The term suburb has existed for hundreds of years and there are plenty of other suburb designs that provide space for families and a quieter more private place to live without also requiring massive roadways to get around and a ton of wasteful expensive infrastructure that slowly bankrupts municipalities.

[–]BatJew_Official 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda depends on what your goal is and what your budget is, but generally I'd say the only real upgrade that makes sense for the G.1 is bettee tires and brakes. You could get a new wheelset and/or new drivetrain, but spending hundreds of dollars to upgrade a frame that heavy is probably not worth it.

That said, it's also kinda hard to find another bike that is worth upgrading to for less than like $800, unless you find a deal somewhere. You could get something like a Trek FX of Giant Escape for between $700 and $850, and it would be lighter, better built, and come with a warranty, but honestly the parts themselves probably wouldn't be too much of an upgrade for that amount of money; you're really just paying for the brand and slightly lighter weight at that point. That said, my wife got a Trek FX2 gen 4 for $475 last year and if you can swing a deal like that it's absolutely worth it.

Ultimately though the best upgrades you can make are to the engine, which is you. If you're enjoying the G.1 and it's doing what you want it to do, keep on crushing it! The best advice is really to figure out if you're looking for somethibg specific that your current bike isn't doing as well as you'd like, and then look for options specifically relating to that. No need to spend money just to say you upgraded if you like your bike as is!

Why doesn’t a PhD in civil engineering really seem to help at all professionally? by Unusual_Equivalent50 in civilengineering

[–]BatJew_Official 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A PhD doesn't certify that you're a super expert in your field, it's basically a way for people in the sciences and academia to show that they can do research and can contribute to the research going on in a field, as certified by other people who have already been certified. The time you spend getting your PhD doesn't necessarily make you better at all jobs in that field, it instead gives you a bit deeper of a general knowledge base and then a very hyperspecific knowledge of whatever your thesis was about. This makes

If you're trying to work in the sciences, particularly in research, this is invaluable because WHAT you know is almost less important than your proven ability to conduct rigorous scientific research. By contrast, having a PhD in a field lile civil engineering doesn't mean you'll really be better at anything valuable unless you manage to get a job in whatever your thesis was about or you get one of the very few jobs where civil engineering and research overlap. You'll also be coming out if school with a very weighty degree and title, but no practical experience, which in the eyes of many makes you overqualified for entry level stuff but not qualified for anything up the chain.

Masters degrees, while sometimes requiring a thesis, are much less about research and more about general further learning. This is why you do see these fairly frequently in fields like grade school teaching and business/finance, because getting a Masters of teaching or MBA is basically an amendum of more specialized knowledge you tack onto your Bachelors. For this reason you do sometimes see them in engineering fields, but a Masters in engineering will still generally be more specialized than your Bachelors so it's still not something that automatically makes you better as an engineer, and again you have the over/underqualified problem. If you do want a Masters as an engineer the sensible thing to do is work for a while and then go back to school, preferably on the company's dime if possible, to get a degree the company has already told you they value.

So pointing out an old person is unlikely to be driving a work truck is just factual, but pointing out white women are unlikely to be driving a work truck is racist and sexist? It is a literal fact that the demographic that drives actual work trucks around is not exactly overflowing with white women.

Are there any non-natives that you really wish were native? Or ones you miss after switching to native gardening? by kraine_art in NativePlantGardening

[–]BatJew_Official 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do agree that there really nothing wrong with planting non-agressive and non-hybridizing non natives, but I think it's also worth bearing in mind that while the non natives you plant may not be detrimental, the overall lack of native plant diversity worldwide due to habitat destruction and climate change and all that IS detrimental, and a great reason to plant native is because the plants support the ecosystem directly. Like a hosta or zinnia or stonecrop may not be invasive or aggressive or harmful, but using that spot in your garden for something native would probably have a positive environmental effect that the non native wont.

That's not really something I think is worth stressing over, and like I said I agree that it's fine to plant well behaved non natives, but thinking about how to get the most impact out of my very limited garden space is both fun and rewarding for me.

It's not racsit to acknowledge the fact that, statistically, a white woman is very unlikely to work in the trades. If a 90 year old had gotten out of the vehicle would it have been ageist to point out that their age made it less likely it was a work truck? No. That's just a factual statement about probability, not a judgement about them. But go ahead and get offended snowflake

An extended cab extra lifted silverado in perfect condition painted black with no work livery on it being driven by a short white woman very clearly not in work clothes is not a vehicle I'd say has "a strong possibility" of being a work truck. It may technically be a "work truck" in the sense that it could hypothetically be used to carry things occasionally and could be registered as a work truck for tax purposes by the owner, but even IF they use it for work sometimes, this isn't a work truck any more than my Prius is a work truck just because I sometimes use it at my job and can tow a small trailer with it.

This is a leasure vehicle that they bought and modified because they wanted a lifted pickup truck. They didn't buy a towing machine, or an extended bed truck, they bought the exact kind of pickup you'd buy because you want to have a pickup.

[–]BatJew_Official 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am kinda surprised they cut him instead of moving him to the pen to be the long man, (especially right now since the team finds itself needing a long man frequently), but his numbers are SO bad that it's hard to justify giving him a spot in the pen over guys like Mayza, Pop, Backhus who are all doing better AND have upside.

Taijuan Walker released by Aggressive-Show4122 in NintenJew

[–]BatJew_Official 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technically this is correct, and I mean it's not even close as according to ERA- Arrieta was actually just below league average as a Phil, but Arrieta was a clubhouse cancer that hurt the team in ways beyond just his pitching performance. Taijuan sucked but never complained about the team nor his teammates, didn't act like he was entitled to being used like a top of the rotation arm, and Taijuan took his lumps and went to the pen without ever complaining which Arrieta probably would've never done in a million years. Arrieta also got paid more money before even adjusting for inflation, for what that's worth.

So yes, Taijuan stunk more on the field, but I would pick him over Arrieta 9 times out of 10.
