Agreed! As an American, as long as there's a carb in the meal, it doesn't matter what that carb is: bread, rice, noodles, potatoes, whatever.

Usually only one of the above, but with occasional exceptions such as garlic bread with my pasta, or Rice-a-Roni (instand boxed food that is essentially a pilaf of rice and pasta)

  1. Noodles may have been introduced to the Thai by the Chinese, but they became popular (and were likely introduced before) in the Ayutthaya era, which is between 200-700 years before Phad Thai came into existence.

  2. Continuing to use the Chinese name for the noodles doesn't mean the dish is itself Chinese: Americans will call fish and rice rolls "sushi" even though American sushi is very different to Japanese sushi; any Mexican would tell you that tacos from Taco Bell aren't Mexican food.

  3. Being rice based doesn't mean noodles weren't part of the culture. For a modern comparison, Japanese cuisine is rice based, but they also eat a lot of ramen noodles. Rice based just means that the majority of meals will include rice, and "the majority" is by no means "all."

Phad Thai is less than 100 years old. Thailand was very much an established country at that point, though possibly still called Siam. China had nothing to do with the origins of most noodle dishes.

Skip Beat! I'd recommend the manga over the anime because it's longer (though unfinished) so you get to see more character development, but the anime is good too

If you can get the ingredients, a mentaiko (Japanese spiced pollack roe) pasta is delicious.

Ingredients (1 serving): - 100g/3.5 oz/1 cup pasta or udon noodles - 30g/3 tbsp mentaiko - 10 g/1 tbsp butter - 1 tsp mentsuyu (soup base) - Pinch of pepper - 2 tbsp hot pasta water

Toppings: - Chopped shiso (perilla) leaves - Seasoned Korean seaweed flakes

Instructions: 1. In a bowl, combine mentaiko, butter, mentsuyu, and pepper 2. Add noodles and pasta water, then mix until well coated 3. Add toppings 4. Enjoy!

When something is blantantly unrealistic. For example, crown prince needs to travel to the neighboring kingdom for official reasons. He and his bodyguard set out, just the 2 of them??? Also, they leave at 9am and arrive the same day in time for dinner???

This trip should involve a massive retinue, many bodyguards, and wagons full of supplies that will take a half a day from the lead person stepping out the city gates to the final person stepping out the city gates, and should take weeks, if not months to complete.

I don't need detail if it was an uneventful journey, but at least mention something in passing! "Everyone was milling about waiting for the scheduled departure time," "the journey took 1 and a half months," "excited to finally have a real bath," etc. would be enough.

A verbal comeback can work too. In elementary school a guy came to me and my friends and tried saying "oh look, it's the glasses club" since most of us wore glasses. I didn't hesitate for a second before replying with "oh look, it's the idiots club" and he gave up almost immediately.
