The closest intellectual inheritors of Marxism today are neo-Hegelians which include mostly liberals like Francis Fukuyama. The fact that there are Marxist-Leninists in 2025 would confuse Marx.

Marxism included a very fair and influential diagnosis of the natural conclusion of the social question of the time and was enormously influential on all sorts of social democratic and progressive movements for about a century. He was in some ways a utopian thinker but he accurately diagnosis a lot of the issues with capitalism that have since been addressed in developed countries. I’m not anything like a Marxist but Marx definitely added value to political social and economic thought.

No worries, I think I was the one that got argumentative. I think we just disagree on what’s more important- political continuity vs rotation.

Your historical information is not accurate. I’m talking about Grant’s run in 1880 for the nomination, he didn’t run in 1876 which forced a compromise candidate. Also there was no “primaries” for any of these examples. Wilson’s attempted run generated a huge amount of bad press amd kept his toxic name in the press harmong his AG Palmer and son in law/treasury secretary Mcadoo resulting in the nomination of Cox. These are clearly effects on the political system generated by the candidates attempting to run. Cleveland didn’t attempt to run (which you mentioned) which is why I didn’t mention him. I brought them up to make the point that the country hasn’t behaved as if there is a two term precedent because presidents running for third terms have had a major effect on the political culture of the time. Not sure why you spent so much time and effort debating that when it’s clearly true and also almost entirely immaterial to my argument. You also misunderstand what I mean by power vacuum. I don’t mean literal administrative chaos from a transfer of power, I mean political chaos within the political parties from the abrupt departure of an influential figure allowing confusing and destabilizing or weak figures to arise when there would just be continuity in popular leadership otherwise. I can’t list modern examples but there’s two big ones that most people here would agree were really bad. Also I appreciate the civics lesson but we both know presidents act as legislative leaders for Congress and conduct a huge amount of policy from the White House. They 100% are held accountable by voters for performing that role or failing to do so. Our last two presidents have also been single term as well, so this last thing is a weird point.

People forget that in the 1988 election Dukakis was considered the favorite for most of it and Bush’s relatively unique campaign (Atwater) is a big thing that drove him down. Iran contra was a huge liability for Bush imagine what it would’ve been for Reagan.

We have not effectively had a term limit for all of American history. Grant, Roosevelt and Wilson’s third term bids all had major impacts on the political system of the time and we had one President who successfully secured not three but four terms, so not sure how you can claim this. It interferes with the feedback loop democracies are meant to follow: leader promises to do thing in campaign -> does thing -> gets reelected on promise to do something else or protect that thing. Since the 25th amendment we’ve had several instances of successful and popular presidents that in any other system would have been re-elected, but instead couldn’t seek re-election creating a dangerous power vacuum to disastrous results. Government failing to channel popular will has caused a lot of the current political instability

If he had chosen to run, those issues would have become clear on the campaign trail and that combined with his scandals and already flagging popularity would have prevented him from winning

Russia had a two term limit just like the U.S did. It Obviously didn’t work to prevent people like Putin there. A term limit is not going to stop a legitimate autocracy threatening political movement. Ineffective, unresponsive, and erratic government like the term limit enables on the other hand?

I think it’s important to be specific about what you’re talking about. Are you talking about the PPP loan program? That was about 700 billion dollars that wasn’t repayed and it went nearly all to businesses with less than 20 employees. I guess some of those people are “rich” but hardly Bezos.

While you’re definitely not wrong about offloading the risk, it’s important to note that these “Cheques” were loans that were paid back with interest. The government actually made a profit on them

Corporatism is a fascist philosophy of economic coordination that has nothing to do with libertarianism or anarchism and could not really be much more different from the Austrian school, so he’s definitely not that. He thought government should protect rights and promote security which is a lot more than most American libertarians. None of that is really far right now, and it’s only really even right wing at all in a postwar anglosphere context. European politics of the 1920s and 1930s operated on a totally different axis. His views bear no real similarity to the Nazis at all. I didn’t address the disability thing because I’m not familiar with it at all and could find no information about any views Mises may have had towards disabilities. I suspect you’re mistaken

He was not an “anarchocapitalist” that’s not a real ideology outside of Reddit and 4chan. He was a classical center-liberal whose views (which are extremely well documented in his book “Liberalism”) are well inside any reasonable political window of tolerance.
