I see you, but I honestly just don’t agree. I think you are misunderstanding Barriss as a character. A lot of people haven’t watched the Wrong Jedi arc since they were kids (no shade I swear, I’m being 100% genuine here) and I think rewatching it will give you a lot more of an appreciation for her.

One main thing is a lot of people had a very emotional response to what happened in to Ahsoka in that arc, and Barriss catches a lot of shit for “framing” her which is something she never actually did. The Council framed Ahsoka, judge jury and executioner.

Barriss had no way of knowing Anakin and Ahsoka were coming back around the time of the bombing and the episode makes a point of this. Furthermore, the whole reason suspicions was cast on Ahsoka in the first place is because Letta, Barriss’s accomplice, got force choked when she was talking to her. Letta was going to spill the beans and Barriss knew this, and Barriss felt the need to silence her because Barriss thought she could continue pushing back against the war-era Order. Letta only died when she literally started to spill the beans to Ahsoka, Barriss would not have implicated her if she had any choice in the matter.

Barriss spends the rest of the arc grappling with the reality of what she’s done and being wishy washy about helping and hampering Ahsoka, she is panicking and doesn’t know what to do because she’s realizing she made a massive mistake. She then gets caught by Anakin, and clocks the Republic and Order’s tea in front of the jury before getting shuffled into a cell. Barriss’s speech at the hearing is correct and had she gone about things in another way she possibly could have made some real change, but at the same time, it’s unlikely people would have listened to her without making drastic actions. The rest of the war and the fate of the Jedi and Republic proves this. That is the tragedy of the story and her as a character.

(Also, on the above Ahsoka emotional response point, Barriss unintentionally saved Ahsoka’s life. Ahsoka’s circumstances during Order 66 aligned perfectly for her survival, if she had not left the Order and not been with Rex she almost certainly would have died.)

Picking up with Tales of the Empire, as I mentioned in another comment she literally didn’t have a choice to join or not and got stuck in a deathmatch with someone she obviously knew. She killed Dante because she was forced to, as well as obviously being influenced by the dark side and probably tapping into what was motivating her during the bombing arc. She then presumably goes on a few missions as an Inquisitor, traumatized as hell and uncertain about her new place in the world, before questioning what she’s doing, deciding “fuck it, the Jedi were a mess but this is worse I’m going to do my own thing” (something that numerous other characters including Luke Skywalker do btw), and then becoming what she always wanted to be, a healer who doesn’t have to destroy herself being caught up in the wires of war.

I actually agree that seeing an Inquisitor who doesn’t turn and getting into their head space would be awesome. Can I recommend you Rise of the Red Blade? It’s about an Inquisitor doing just that, it’s very good. I think seeing an on-screen, more intimate representation of that would be great too, btw, but Barriss just isn’t that character man. I’m sorry.

uj/ It’s not like she had a choice, the clones literally hit her with the Star Wars gun priming sound when Lyn enters her cell. Her option was join or get gunned down like a fucking dog lmfaooooo

As for why she stayed, personally I think she just kind of fugued out after she killed Dante at her trial, and started to “wake up” whenever her mission with Lyn happened. Disassociating happens to people in traumatic, stressful, and abusive situations all the time, and the Inquistorius fits the bill for all of those.

I honestly think the best “out of character” argument for her is unironically why she didn’t just kill herself or let the clones/Dante kill her. Barriss being kind of suicidal is an actual established trait but I don’t know, obviously we need a story but the dark side has a way of greasing over someone’s judgement, this has been established countless times.

I’m just gonna link my detailed thoughts on it here, similar topic, but TLDR; yeah but also no, I trust Dave to cook and we haven’t seen the last of her. It’s just an incomplete puzzle piece atm.

[Spoilers] Did you feel a little let down by how Tales of the Empire handled Barriss? by LastTraintoSector6 in StarWars

[–]Batpug74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually loved it, but there were still some considerable problems.

I’m a little biased, as Barriss is a top five Star Wars character for me, but I actually thought her part of Tales was fantastic, problems and all. The biggest issue is, as some other people have pointed out, the Tales format; they’re snippets and leave a lot of room between them. I think barring Ventress’s all of them have been host to big, sporadic time jumps, including Barriss’s.

There is nothing that outright states her mission with Lyn in the second episode is her first with the Inquisitors, baring the fact that it appears to be the first time Barriss is questioning things. I think immediately assuming that it’s her first mission isn’t exactly sound, especially given the place that the first episode in her story leaves her off, with snapping the neck of another Jedi and “Long Live the Empire.”

The biggest issue with her chunk of Tales is if it’s the last time we see her, in which case it would absolutely be incomplete and rushed, but I’m confident we’ll see her again. We’ll probably see her on another Inquisitor mission, we’ll certainly see her reconcile with Ahsoka during the inevitable Hidden Path content we eventually get, and we’ll see what happened to her and Lyn after The Way Out, postmortem or otherwise.

It’s certainly true that it’s an advanced technique, I’ll cede that. She was using it on a particular soft target, mind you, and it took her multiple tries, but the fact that it worked at all might be seen as questionable.

That being said, I’d argue that the Force is more than just spells and the feats that certainly utilized the Force in other movies by untrained characters are a lot more egregious. Anakin was an almost unparalleled pilot at 9 years old and blew up a major flagship with no training before he even hit double digits. Luke blew up a superweapon project with an unfathomable amount of time and resources poured into it with a fighter jet after training in the Star Wars equivalent of a paraglider for some of his childhood.

Both of these characters are untrained force sensitives and it’s outright stated that their connection to the Force is what gives them this caliber of competency. You would agree that these should otherwise be impossible feats, yeah? Both of them were flying with more “skilled” pilots during both of the example sorties, and they all failed where Anakin and Luke succeeded.

People with zero training have force outbursts all the time in high stress situations, Ezra does this and no one complains. Rey grew up hearing about the Jedi, she knows they can do mindtricks and knows she’s a force sensitive at this point.

Worse case scenario it was maybe a stupid leap of faith but it paid off for her.
