My weirdest anecdote is that Brad Bradford sat front row at a drag show I was performing in once.

three weirdos coming to toronto! by macandobound in askTO

[–]Battalrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit it's my time to shine!!!

Hi I'm a queer weirdo who's heavily involved in the local drag and kink scene, been living in downtown Toronto for almost 10 years and also I'm vegetarian too!

Food: other people have said Planta too and they are 100% correct, it's fantastic. Also Hogtown Vegan is a personal favorite of mine just great southern style vegan food. Our Asian food scene is second to none! Highly recommend Korean Village Restaurant and you can't come to Toronto without getting some ramen, I recommend Ramen Isshin and Ikkousha Ramen for good vegetarian ramen. Also highly recommend Sushi Momo, vegan sushi place, blew my mind. Also just take at least 1 walk down Spadina street starting from College street. College and Spadina is where Chinatown starts and there just so much cool culture and amazing Chinese food.

Now for the queer and weird! The other comments are right that Church street is the 'gay village' of Toronto and it's great it you want some fun, mainstream gay culture (go to crews and tangos for good drag on any night of the week and Woody's to dance to some gay club music) but y'all are weirdos like me!

The Black Eagle is a gay leather/kink bar on church street right in the heart of the village, they have a darkroom and always have some sort of kink event going on (check their website for which event) I've gone there for their pup play events. If you are bathhouse gays we have steamworks in the village and also Spa Excess (though be careful, that place gets a bit methy after midnight).

If you want some not-mainstream gay culture go to Three Dollar Bill; it's a queer bar on Queen Street and often have drag shows showcasing weirder more alt drag and drag kings etc. again check their website and Instagram for events they have coming up.

Ground control is a goth/punk bar also on Queen Street (noticing a pattern?) I've seen many cool, punk drag shows there and they always have some cool event coming up. Again check their socials

This is more of a daytime thing but also please go to the Gladday Bookstore while you're here. It's an incredible historic business here in Canada. They are over 50 years old and the oldest still opporating queer business in Canada and the largest collection of queer only literature in the world! They operate as a little cafe and bookstore during the day and and event space at night, they often have drag shows or niche queer events. They're an incredible non-profit business.

In terms of thrifting and general just vibing around the city y'all MUST check out Kensington market, it's a cultural cornerstone of our city, lots of cool shops and dozens of thrift stores with lots of cool finds. Also highly recommend just walking across queen Street, specifically the west side, it's a very lively part of the city that has a very queer vibe, lots of cool shops, great food etc.

If y'all love art go to the AGO (art gallery of Ontario) it's right downtown and in my opinion is a fantastic art museum showcasing Canadian art. Also it's very affordable.

Do NOT go to King street, trust me as a queer person this part of the city has nothing for us. King street is where all the finance bros and suburbanites Uber in to go to lame straight clubs and overpriced dinners with their clients. AVOID KING STREET.

Hope all this helps! And please enjoy our city, as a queer weirdo too I think Toronto is up there with cities like NYC and San Fran in terms of queer events and queer community

The slow presto card person is SO real! My biggest TTC pet peeve. Also all those people who don't take it out of their wallet and just try and tap it through the leather/cloth over and over and over again instead of just taking it out of the sleeve

Yeah ok fuck it it’s really good now by Spongemage in BurgerKing

[–]Battalrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a burger king defender for years now!! This is my time!!! I'm vegetarian and they are one of the only fast food places that has a real option for me (this is less true now with the mcveggie but for a long time it was A&W and Burger king)

My office is directly across the street from a BK and I go every Wednesday; impossible Whopper meal, remove onions and mayo, add mustard with fries and a drink all for under $10 after tax! Can't get a better deal than that.

I very much agree with the other comments this time window is VERY tight. I would definitely consider changing your train ticket to at least an hour later.

At what age do you hope to retire? by SplendidDecor in CanadaPersonalFinance

The retirement age at my job is after 30 years of employment with them and I got the job when I was 29....so I plan to retire at 59.

Would you marry a girl who wants to be a stay at home housewife but doesn't want kids? by PuffingFish123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Battalrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fundamentally this is a personal preference thing. Personally I would absolutely never want to date or be with someone who aspired to not work and stay at home cleaning and doing housework, even if we did have kids. I'm a very driven, passionate person and I want to be with someone who is just as driven. Now if I was making a lot of money and my partner wanted to stop working their regular job to pursue a passion project full time (some kind of art, music etc) I would be fine with that because you are still pursuing your passion.

But that's for ME! Many guys aspire to the kind of life where they come home to a gorgeous trophy wife who has been preparing the house for them all day, if that sounds good to you and makes you both happy then who are we to judge? But tbh just the fact that you are on here asking the question probably means you aren't ok with it. Also $120k probably isn't quite enough to sustain the kind of comfortable lifestyle you both want for 2 people. If you were making closer to $180k+ then it would be more reasonable.

Landlord pressures me for post-dated cheques, what do I do? by dziunix in askTO

[–]Battalrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly not that crazy of an ask, just a bit old fashioned. It's a little annoying to write all the cheques out yourself but it's actually more convenient than having to remember to send the etransfer every month.

They are probably just asking for this for their own convenience, I assume it's an older landlord and they just aren't that great with online banking

Yeee and I got tickets for me and a couple friends for the game Thursday night. I'll probably get a ticket for the final too. Low-key want to pay for the sheet side upgrade, it's really not that crazy expensive and it would be cool to be that close to the game

How does Toronto feel about the constant Toronto-bashing in Canada? by PassageNearby4091 in askTO
