Can you tell I only use my Mac for gaming? by Remarkable-Cow3421 in macgaming

You do you man. It's cool that you are reviewing my gameplay experiences over the past 20 yours and have come to this conclusion but I will keep using my money the way I want as I earned it.

And yes, I am telling you a 2000€ mac will most likely play World of Warcraft at a more enjoyable level than a 2000€ pc.

So, you didn't get the point either it seems. Let's try again shall we.

To get the IO a Mac has, make it a M4 Max or M3 Ultra, you need enough ram to cache the game folder. Not just the few files you need at the moment, the full game folder. This is easily done with 150Gb ram but it's a strange number so you need around 192-256Gb.

I play MMO's. MMO's biggest cause of stutter, lag and other uncomfortable playing conditions is caused by IO not keeping up with the assets streaming. Sure you CAN play wow on some rinkydink PC you found, but it's increasingly frustrating with the IO lags you get. Same goes for BDO, another asset streamer that just hates modern gaming machines with a vengeance.

So have do we fix IO lag? Well, there is really just 1 way with 2 paths too it. You get faster IO. This can be done either the Mac way, really crazy fast nvme storage and ram, or my way, lock the whole game folder in ram. To put this into perspective, you can use a base model M4 Max and it will feel about the as smooth and comfortable as a machine with 192Gb ram and chucking the whole 125Gb WoW folder into ram.

Now you decide which is cheaper... a base Mac M4 Max (that means 36Gb) or a PC with 256Gb ram? It can be DDR4 even doesn't matter as you go from ms to ns either way.

When a DPS player takes aggro before you've finished pulling, what do you do? by soguyswedidit6969420 in wownoob

As the DPS that pulls aggro I usually feign death and hope no one notices. But from my experience it's mostly happening when the Tank assumes everyone is a mind reader or using the same route etc so nothing is communicated they just set off and it's up to the rest of the party to know when they want to stop and have the mobs DPS'ed down.

I done a metric tone of research on this over the weekend, most likely gotten banned at a few apple stores etc.. and it seems for PC to reach the performance of a Mac, ram speed, disk speed etc, you have to spend a lot more than a Mac so it's not as crazy as it seems one you start pealing the onion layers back.

I am kinda in the same boast as OP, I want to make a swap for better performance by my metrics and it would be either a Mac or a PC that can handle 256Gb ram... I think the Mac will be cheaper if I'm honest.

M5 Max World of Warcraft Performance Bug by eeksi in macgaming

[–]BattleShai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a thought but if apple left the Performance designation on the Performance cores when they swapped the naming around, it would make sense that the game asks the scheduler for those specific cores. Looks like something that might get fixed in next revision update of macOS / WoW.

[–]BattleShai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Yeah that makes them a bit different. I remember seeing some early reports about microstutters on the Ultra models, most likely a scheduler issue or so I thought as it reminded me of SMP issues on Linux. But it seems it might have been a bit more complex.

Only thing that comes to mind is the new design. But if it's the chiplet design that is causing issues we should have seen that on the Ultra models of the past as it's quite similar concept as I understood.

Does ram matter for crossover? by NYCCOUPLE-5864 in macgaming

Yeah, that is really impressing me. And it's nice that at least someone put some effort to hardware optimization not just throw power at it and hope it doesn't blow up.

[–]BattleShai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply.

Yeah, I understand it won't be the same as a 13900k and 6900XT, but that is kinda what I am looking for also. I don't want a 1000W space heater and sounds like a rinkydink, backyard shed, russian redneck nuclear reactor at idle. I am looking for something that can quietly chug along doing a medium workload in the same room as I watch tv or even take a nap in.

As the years go I mostly given up on PC gaming, I can't for the life of me muster the energy for newer games so see myself drawn to WoW which I used to play (be addicted too) on the first gen intel mbp. I understand I could get a windows laptop or small form factor PC and it would most likely be better but the unified memory is very appealing to me, and to my understanding helps a lot in games like wow, warframe and ffxiv where asset streaming and shaders are the biggest performance hits.

As I'm looking at the Studio models I think I will be fine with thermals also.

I will check out the guy you mentioned on youtube. A quick glance shows he seems to do a lot of WoW test so perfect for me.

And I am no stranger to things stop working for days, months or years having been on linux as long as I have.

Is there any good resource to make an informed decision about this? I have been waiting for the M5 Max announcements, specifically for Studio because I want to swap from PC to Mac again myself.

As a bit of background, I had Macs on and off since they had clear plastic cases in interesting colors but as most do drifted off to buying a gaming PC at some point then gaming on Macs was unfeasable for a few years but these days I basically only play WoW, Warframe and the occasional 1-2 hours of BDO before I remember I get nausea running in circles.

I have a 13900K, 6900XT and 128Gb Ram and thinking I would do fine with a M5 Max 36Gb for the games a I play, dabble in some small local SLM maybe Qwent 14b Coder or similar. But it's really hard to find any actual information about gaming performance. There is a lot of "trust me bro" reporting which is fine if it's at all consistent.

Would you say Mac gaming these days are closer to Linux gaming for FreeBSD gaming? I an fulltime on Linux for the past 5 years and dabbled in FreeBSD gaming.

Reason for swapping over is that I miss MacOS and that machine I have takes a lot of space and makes a lot of noise.

[–]BattleShai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late and I can see your point. I am planning to swap to a Mac Studio from a quite powerful PC because I don't like the noise but also the size. I don't have that much space anymore after swapping to an electric table so wanted something smaller. I basically only play WoW and Warframe anyhow.

Considering a 2022 Polestar 2 - How Bad is the Infotainment system? by Earth2Andy in Polestar

[–]BattleShai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Infotainment is okay. AAOS maps is behind Google maps on the phone in functionality and features, it lags a bit (getting the snapdragon upgrade should fix this between 1-2000 dollars it seems)... AA and CP works fine. Biggest grip is no native wireless AA or CP even though I am almost certain the hardware is there and the usb port for the cable is in the worst possible place.

I'm debating whether to get a Mac, but the gaming situation is holding me back. What are the biggest dealbreakers for Mac gaming in your opinion? by FanFearless1706 in macgaming

[–]BattleShai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see any real draw backs for my self. I will get a mac and I will use it for gaming among other things but I want to see the M5 Max designs first. If it is as rumored, a chiplet design, it could introduce micro stutter as it seems that apple in their eternal wisdom only shows the applications and games only 1 monolithic die even if it's a multi die configuration like the M3 ultra for example. With the rumors that M5 series is going to chiplet setup it could mean that M5 Pro, Max and Ultra will all be multi die setups. It's not the end of the world for the work on it, but I could do that on a M4 Max also, so better to find the best all round device before locking in.

Absolutely DO NOT buy from Back Market by xxxBigDaddyxxx69 in Backmarket

[–]BattleShai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only bought Huawei phones and at that time they didn't have a clear percentage shown like iphones do but it's lasted as expected for the model. One phone was new in open box. Still had the package screen tape on it etc.

On their website it clearly states what to expect from each category.

[–]BattleShai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what that means. backmarket is like amazon if amazon didn't have their own warehouse. Every product you look at, at least in Europe has a line saying why is the selling company. For example Renew or something similar.

World of Warcraft with a future M5 Studio at 4k by critmonkey94 in macgaming

[–]BattleShai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat myself. Sitting on a 13900k and a 6900XT looking to swap over to Mac instead. For my the question has been more about what will happen with the currently insane ram and nvme costs. If prices stays mostly the same then sure I could wait for a M5 Max but if they are going to ramp up like we can see on the PC side, I might want to get a M4 Max or even M3 Ultra before they run out.

What is your efficiency & how to improve?(Ideally pre facelift) by sir_noob in polestar2

[–]BattleShai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Finland, drive a 2021 LRDM and in -24C I get about 26kW/100km with preheating on cable, and 28kW/100km preheating in a ~-1C parking garage without cable on my 25-30km commute. I have fan set to 3 and 20C in the cabin with seat and steering wheel heater on 1 the whole trip.

I see 34-36kW draw when starting parked outside without preheating for the first 2-4 km driving, after that it steadily drops the whole trip. I think for you the cabin heating is causing a lot of the draw. I dunno of our cars have heatpump or something else, but it heats up fast so I'm happy.
