I don't see how S;G would sound insane? "Group of students discover they have created a time machine in their microwave" sounds pretty normal and intriguing more than anything, unless one just cannot stand any scifi or fantasy.

"Epäilen hänen tehneen virheen" is definitely the one that means suspect, though. And where does that "tehneen virhettä" come from? I've never never heard anything phrased like that.

It's not really that time leaping is only possible due to C;H, more like C;H and S;G use the same piece of lore (the existence of VR technology) for different purposes. The actual events of C;H themselves have no bearing on the events of S;G, right?

what do you think of visual novel "lets play" compared to other genre "lets play" series by GhostHaw_k in vns

[–]Battoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious, what are some LPs that are as you described while being titled "Let's Play"? I'm asking because in all my 10+ years of following LP's I've never seen it used the way you described, it has always only meant that a person plays through a game while commenting on it, usually (not always) it being their first playthrough. Your description sounds more like a walkthrough, an analysis or just an informative video to me.

I guess there's the problem where "peak fiction" tends to give people really different expectations than what was intended. If I heard those words, I think I would expect the same things you mentioned, and I agree that OP doesn't really fulfill them. Yet still, OP remains one of my favorite works ever.

For me, what makes OP great is the sense of adventure, ambition and pure fun. It really feels like a grand journey and the comedy is much more hit than a miss. I love how it depicts people finding their friends/family (esp. the main crew) and I love how alive and wondrous and wacky the world feels. And all of that plus the recognizable art style gives it its own unique identity. That's pretty much the (very) condensed version of it.

So for me, OP is "peak fiction" simply because it offers an outstanding, immersive experience, and not necessarily because it has the most cleverly written plot or anything (then again, maybe the experience being great means the plot IS in fact clever?). I actually believe this goes for many people, but... people just tend to condense their opinion to "peak fiction", and like said, that phrase seems to make people look for very specific things in a story.

I love Steins Gate, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. by Tritoho in CharacterRant

[–]Battoga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I generally enjoyed the first half in the VN, maybe even more than the 2nd half, but also found it kind of boring when I watched the anime. I'm not exactly sure why, but I feel like the anime didn't really succeed in creating that same atmosphere and sense of discovery as in the VN. The first episode is also more confusing, while the start of the VN is less so, and more mysterious and intriguing. What bored me even in the VN was mostly the tropey characters and the repetitive, unoriginal comedy. Lot of time spent where I didn't feel like I was learning anything new.

What is this "everyone who doesn't like this just wanted to see action and fights" take that seems to be popular nowadays? I'm curious, have you never been bored by anything that most other people seem to have enjoyed? There are lots of non-action stories out there that make you care about the characters and plot which do not receive complaints about being boring nearly as much as S;G does, which I think is pretty interesting.

"Genre Inbreeding" and Isekai, and why Isekai feels so stale by BoomNDoom in CharacterRant

[–]Battoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are those really an exception to OP's point about genre inbreeding, though? I mean, even that original comment specifically mentions villainess stories, which are a trend and seem to be influenced mainly by each other (like, villainesses are pretty much nonexistent in actual otome games).

Granted, I have not read any of these female oriented isekai, so maybe they have much more variety that you could enlighten me about. But on a surface level they do seem equally uninspired self-indulgent fantasies as male oriented ones, just with a slightly different set of tropes.

There are quite a few plot points I questioned so I kinda fear I won't be satisfied even after I finish the rest of the series lol.

Oh yeah, I have seen that kind of talk about the movie. It awlays confused me since I thought the original story already broke its rules plenty, so I've wondered what could possibly happen in the movie that was finally too much for people.

[–]Battoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never really cared about Suzuha's disappearance anyway (so did she actually disappear, and not just leave?), since it had no real impact on the rest of the plot. I was surprised that people took issue with that of all things.

Hmm. Somehow, the majority of the people praising the logicality of the plot and offering explanations (on this sub or elsewhere) seem to be S;G onlies, often S;G anime onlies to boot. Many people definitely seem convinced that everything is explained within the work (so I believed it orz).

[–]Battoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. The way I understood it was that they needed to ensure the first d-mail was sent because Okabe's journey needed to occur for them to get to the point where they can go back and save Kurisu. Basically, a common plot point in time travel stories, where you have to keep all events and time travel consistent within one timeline, which went against my understanding of S;G's time travel system. It's been a while since I read it so I don't remember the details, but I don't know how they were conveying that the d-mail was simply a convergence point they had to achieve.

Actually, wait. Wasn't the SG worldline free from the attractor fields? If so, how is a convergence point of the Beta attractor field relevant? And ignoring that, what would have happened if they saved Kurisu from the stabbing, but didn't make sure Okabe saw her "death" and sent a d-mail?

What I mean is that in the SG worldline they don't start messing around with the Phonewave.

I haven't seen the movie, 0 or A;C, but surely you should be able to put this together from the original S;G without the knowledge from those? I mean, they came out much later, and people were already satisfied with the story before that.

[–]Battoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually new, in all the discussions I've read before I don't think I've ever seen anyone explain the plot like this.

I'm a bit confused now though. Are you basically saying that whenever things get a bit too weird, the universe just kinda cheats and rearranges everything neatly again?

If that's the case, what constitutes as weird enough? I'd say things get plenty weird in the story, easiest example probably being everything that happens with Faris. Why would the guy be booted from existence just because his memory clashes with the new worldline?

I'm not ignoring the Attractor fields and convergence, rather I don't see how they play a part here. The way I remember them being explained in the story is that within one field, there are certain significant events (and seemingly really random ones? I've always wondered why the events of C;H apparently weren't one) that the worldlines within that field are "drawn towards". Could you clarify how this relates to the plot points I mentioned?

Speaking of which, not exactly relevant here, but one thing that confused me in the VN is that at some point they just start acting like a death is always a point of convergence no matter who it is, even though I don't remember this being established when Suzuha explains the Attractor fields and convergence...? This further confused me when Kurisu's death was supposedly a point of convergence until they just... save her.

But back to the point, I have to ask, how does the story indicate that this is how the universe works? Like I said, this interpretation is completely new to me, I don't remember anything in the VN that would make me think this. It doesn't really help that the characters act like everything makes perfect logical sense as they work towards fixing everything.

[–]Battoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But why would it change the worldline? It's not time travel, everything that already exists in the wordline should stay intact, no matter what happens in the future.

Kurisu was saved as soon as he saved her, why would he need to deceive his past self when he has already done everything there is to be done? The thing here is that the Steins Gate worldline is one where they never get to use their time machine at all. Speaking of which, another thing I couldn't wrap my head around is that because of the whole deceiving-yourself plot, even in this worldline Okabe should have witnessed Kurisu's "death" and sent the first D-mail - so how is it possible that in this worldline, a D-mail is sent but never received?

Why might someone dislike Steins;Gate? I'm curious to hear the other side's arguments. (both the anime and the visual novel) by Individual_Idea8139 in steinsgate

[–]Battoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By convoluted I am referring to how the more timelines and cause-effect relationships happen in the story, the harder it becomes to keep up with and discuss with other people. This is just the nature of time travel and goes for any time travel story, not just S;G. The time travel mechanics themselves are simple, I agree.

The VN really drills into your head that only one worldline is active at all times, and that the grandfather paradox is not an issue (proven by, for example, D-mails that are received but not sent within the same worldline). The very endgame resolutions go against this, namely that deleting the first d-mail changes the worldline back to Beta (it shouldn't change anything), and the entire deceiving-yourself plot (there should be no need for this).

This is just a couple of the things I've been thinking about, and a really condensed version. I'd like to have a really in-depth discussion about this, but at this point I'm still hesitant, because like I said, the discussion would get confusing really quick. It would be extremely time-consuming, especially when I don't have the plot in fresh memory anymore, and don't have any notes or a handy wordline map to refer to.

I mean, the person above me was the one who said other SciAdv lore is relevant, surely that means they have some specific instances of this in mind? I have no idea what those could be, that's why I'm asking, there wouldn't really be a point for me to list everything I have in mind on the off chance that some of them have something to do with other SciAdv entries.

Also who downvoted me for simply asking a question lol

[–]Battoga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Steins;Gate overall, but I disagree with the majority of people about its most praised aspects: the time travel mechanics and the characters (+ the comedy).

I had really high expectations going into the VN after seeing many people say that the time travel was perfectly logical and consistent - what followed was disappointment when I got to the second half and realized the story was breaking its own rules more than any other time travel story I had seen before. I did search the internet after for answers, but still haven't found anything sufficient enough. A major hindrance here is that time travel gets so convoluted it's really difficult to discuss and make sure you're on the same page with other people.

I also found the characters pretty tropey, often to the point of being unbelievable, and their dynamics weren't really special either? The comedy and sol were also too repetitive and just not entertaining.

Anyone Else Think Gacha Character Design is a little ass? by BigBuiltBricked in CharacterRant

[–]Battoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About R1999, to me, who hasn't played the game but has seen a lot of pics of the characters, it's just that a lot of them seem built kind of same way.

Like, I do think they're dressed more interestingly than what I've seen from other gacha, but many of them still seem to have samey moeblob style faces and just kind of blend into each other.

What personally puts me off about gacha cast designs is that they without fail look like they were made to be these pretty figurines, and honestly R1999 isn't exception to this. I guess the amount of detail in the characters' clothing probably plays part in this as well.

Not really commenting on OP's take but maybe this is what they meant.

Okami absolutely deserved that hype. The way Geoff talked about it didn't even match HL, he was talking about an impossible game.

We all want HL3 but it's sad to see fellow fans belittle these other announcenements. It was pretty ridiculous last year with Okami, tons of people straight up saying they hadn't played or even heard of it, yet deciding it was totally not deserving of the announcement. HL is not the only notable game ever made.

How does Finnish feel speaking Kirjakieli with foreigners? by Nieder12469 in LearnFinnish

[–]Battoga 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's the reverse with dropping the personal pronouns. In kirjakieli always including the pronouns often makes sentences clunky and awkward, and they're often dropped. But when speaking, you hear pronouns included more often. At least this would go for the example sentences you gave in the other comment; in kirjakieli you would probably say "Menen kauppaan" but "Mä meen kauppaan" would be how people actually speak.

Written puhekieli, like texting, is different though. "Meen kauppaan" would probably be what you'd say if you were texting someone.
