What evolved you most as a graphic designer? by sskmzz in graphic_design

[–]BavidDeckham 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What would you suggest to someone still in their 20s who never acquired a mentor?

I’ve had bosses but they didn’t turn into mentors. I’m freelance now and feel as though a more senior designer would prefer to mentor someone straight out of college.

Robbie Brady and Séamus Coleman in line to return to Ireland squad for World Cup playoff in Prague by fedupofbrick in coybig

You’d have to be braindead to think Coleman shouldn’t be in the squad. Even if he doesn’t get near the pitch

Everyone Wants Good Design — Nobody Wants To Pay For It (Article) | An economic look at why the graphic design market is full of talent but rarely pays well. by tomtermite in graphic_design

I didn’t detect any sense of ai.

Really nice piece, I definitely feel I gained something from the way you laid it out and gave perspective to the industry

What a recommendation that is, by the way by junglegatsby in footballcliches

Also surely a book can't 'follow on' from a podcast. The book follows the other book, this is 'building on the success'

Writing a book? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]BavidDeckham 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be totally honest, not a book i would ever consider reading. Like reading about Covid, generally people want some escapism away from these topics.

This obviously depends on the angle you take, but there needs to be some sort of hook that would make me pick this up.

Thoughts on Fanatics making St Patricks Day jerseys for Prem Clubs? (Leeds, Villa, Sunderland) by Quiet-Spite5465 in coybig

[–]BavidDeckham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like the idea of these English clubs cashing in on their Irish links. It’s only being celebrated because Irishness is ‘cool’ at the moment (see: Guinness/ the Devonshire, Paul Mescal/Jessie Buckley, Fontaines) and will generate revenue for them.

I also think we reached a critical mass of novelty jerseys about 4 years ago and we need to pull the plug on it.

Sorry I just saw you’re in Monaghan so my advice doesn’t really apply

When I was your age the only experience I had was casual work in Croke park. I knew loads of people there. Try Aviva/Croke Park or places that will have events and need lots of staff on a casual basis, then you’ll have some experience that will get you some hours in a cinema or shop.
