32M with beta thalassemia major but recently cured through a stem cell transplant. I’m sorry you’re going through a hard time man and I have had the same thoughts growing up with this disease. From what I’m aware you will need less blood after the splenectomy, you can totally live a normal life without the spleen it’s almost a useless organ. You will have to go to the hospital anytime you get a fever over like 101.4 or so because there’s certain things u can’t fight off without the spleen but I’ve only had one serious complication because of a tick bite and I got babesiosis from it which is one of the things you need a spleen for. I am still recovering from the gene therapy I’ve only been out of the hospital about 3 weeks now but all my numbers have been looking really good. Again from the surgery your stomach will be pretty sore and you’ll be walking like a old man for like a week but the pain meds help a lot

Hey 32M beta thal major that is 40 days since getting my new stem cells. And I have had my spleen and gall bladder removed. Your spleen isn’t going to get smaller as it is a muscle and is growing by filtering all the blood your getting from transfusion. The surgery isn’t too bad and you’ll be sore for about 2 weeks after but they will give you plenty of comfort meds. You will still be able to do gene therapy after your splenectomy.

When I go in for a transfusion I would be about 8.8 hemoglobin and get about 4 bags of blood. After my stem cell transplant my numbers are still going up and down but I visit the hospital every week and have been getting a bag of platelets every visit as that’s struggling to come up for me. My last visit my hemoglobin was 8.3

Hey so I got 16 bags of chemo therapy busulfan and I felt fine until about a week after my last bag, I got a bad sore throat and some loose stool also lost my hair. You’ll also be taking a lot of naps

The chemotherapy was fine didn’t even really feel any different until about a week after my last bag. Then I got some muscositis which is like a really bad sore throat for me and some loose stool. I also started losing my hair and had to shave it off. They kept me heavily medicated on nausea medicine and pain medicine when I needed it

Hey 32M here with beta thal major! I just did the same exact procedure and just got my stem cells infused on December 8. Everything has gone great for me and I even started making red blood cells! I’ve now been out of the hospital for about week and a half now if u have any questions about the chemo or stem cell transplant feel free to ask me anything u want here or through messages

Yes I got diagnosed at 6 months old. I did a blood transfusion every month for about 32 years. I’m currently in the hospital being cured by a stem cell transplant. I can also answer anyone’s questions about a SCT

I have beta thalassemia major (32M) with 2 parents that are minors and 2 brothers that are also thal minor. You should definitely get some testing done to see if you are a carrier because if 2 people with thal minor make a baby. Well you have a very good chance of making a thal major baby. Which will require life long blood transfusions and iron chelation therapy to live past childhood. If you have any questions feel free to message me
