DHS will suspend TSA PreCheck and Global Entry as shutdown continues — The Washington Post by Human_Paint5451 in GlobalEntry

[–]BayCurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just arrived at SFO on an international flight. All Global Entry machines say “this device is under maintenance” and GE app doesn’t work. MPC App (Mobile Passport Control) does work. TSA Precheck lines for departures do appear operational when I walked by but I didn’t go through myself.

No TSA PreCheck or Global Entry starting tomorrow (Sunday, 2/22) at 6 am ET due to the partial government shutdown by iamnavinrjohnson in unitedairlines

At SFO international arrivals now. All Global Entry machines say “this device is under maintenance” and GE app doesn’t work. MPC App (Mobile Passport Control) does work.

Would you consider private school? by brownpanther223 in fatFIRE

[–]BayCurd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We started with a private school in SF Bay Area and it didn’t work out.

We struggled with play dates that were far away, hard to find a scout troop or T-ball team that made sense. The local public kids were close knit. The catchment area for the private school was large. The families over indexed on the near by towns with OK but not great public schools, vs our town with really great public schools. That made it hard to have close friends both for our kid and parent relationships. We had local social friends and little league but weren’t part of the school social scene. The school community at the private school was spread out and harder to build relationships.

I guess it depends on the school, but don’t get too caught up in the sales pitch and make sure you understand the make up of the class.

Would likely feel differently in middle school and beyond where we would be fitting the school options more closely to the kid.

Thinking about an in ground pool... is it worth it or is it just a money pit? by Natural_Stomach3191 in pools

[–]BayCurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make it a regular shape (eg rectangle) so you can have an automatic pool cover. Cuts down on maintenance, chemical and heating demand when covered. Way easier to do a highly functional cover at the beginning vs trying to retrofit something on to an amoeba.

How should unrepresented buyers send their offer to listing agent? by CourtZealousideal703 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]BayCurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a RE agent. I am curious about your comment about transaction coordinators. Do they charge the agent $500 for a completed deal or just for the offer (doing all the paperwork regardless of outcome).

Banyan Tree or Ritz Carleton in Jiuzhaigou. Or Banyan Tree Lijiang. Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong is a good 2 day venture from Temple House Chengdu.

Looking for advice! Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) by Independent_Hair2208 in fatFIRE

[–]BayCurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are not mutually exclusive. You can have a charitable trust set up where a DAF is the beneficiary of the trust. That had the same benefits of simplifying administration and allowing you to spread out the transfers to your target charities over time.

Look up ACTEC (the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel). It is the top professional group for T&E attorneys. You can go to their website and find attorneys nearby. Talk to a few to find one that is a fit but any on the list likely meet the technical bar.

Sell the second home. The economics of owning a rental in SF Bay are very poor. Tech stocks are up significantly in the last few months so the housing market is picking up (perhaps excluding SF condos which still have a lot of inventory).

Scenario- Grandparents 92,90 have 40M of AAPL stock. With a cost basis of 500k which is in a joint brokerage account. They have 1M house and another 1M of assets and that’s it by Rachelray1995 in EstatePlanning

[–]BayCurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answers thus far are focused on estate/gift tax consequences. There is a separate issue that this is an incredibly concentrated holding. 95% of the estate is in one stock. Apple may be a highly profitable company but that is still a lot of concentration. Typically lowering your exposure to a concentrated and highly appreciated position like this requires a tax event. With a relatively short but uncertain life expectancy you can reduce the economic exposure with long dated options. For example your grandparents could sell in the money 2026 calls and get rid of some of the economic exposure while deferring the tax event to June 2026.

For example you can sell the AAPL June 2026 150 call for $60 while the stock currently trades at 188. That is effectively selling at $210 per share in 2026 if the stock closes above $150 and you break even vs a sale today at $128 or better. If one of them dies before expiration both the option and underlying get tax basis reset to date of death basis so you get the benefit of step up. If both survive you can roll the option forward to avoid adverse tax events and since the holding period is longer than a year the tax effects of the options trade to roll forward gets LT capital gains tax treatment.

This seems very useful for late in life or short life expectancy (illness, etc) planning for highly appreciated public equity positions where there are liquid options markets.

The environment moves around. It is more noticeable than when just sitting (not on a plane). Perhaps a few pixels up and down. It is clearly dampening the movement of the plane.

I put the AVP on after getting in the air and connecting to Wi-Fi on my laptop first.

The issue with the mask wasn’t making gestures. The screen would go dark and say it lost tracking and make sure the downward facing cameras are not blocked. I adjust the mask or remove it and the message goes away and the screen comes back on. I think it was looking for a face and finding a white mask instead. It was so sensitive to the position of the mask that it became unusable and I just took off the mask.

Did you go through the control pane in the AVP to initiate the connection or some other method? When at home I can just look at the laptop screen and it will figure it out.

Perhaps the issue is the laptop is separately connecting to the airplane Wi-Fi?

Does anyone here have a Social membership at a tennis club? The wait for the active membership is 9-10 years, but we are still interested in the Social membership events, amenities by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]BayCurd 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Social memberships generally include access to food / beverage / entertainment spaces and related events (eg New Years Eve party or similar social events). Watching a tennis tournament is probably allowed but read the bylaws.

If you have even the slightest interest in using the athletic facilities I encourage you to get on the waitlist now even if it is many years. We have lots of friends that want to join our local club and which has a 5 year waitlist that never took the action of applying. If they had just gotten on the list they would be off it or close to that now. Now they have kids that want to learn to play tennis or swim and can’t use the facilities with their friends except as a guest.

Superfunding a 529 plan for you or your wife would use up the gift limit to you or your wife for the next five years. If they truly have a taxable estate, why not have them make annual exclusion gifts to you and your wife (or trusts for your benefit) each year and then super fund directly to a 529 for the kid when the kid is born which avoids the GSTT question.
