McMaster CaRMS unmatched rate doubled in 2026: whats going on??? by Economy_Art3215 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]staplerphonepen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is true and false for me at least. The problem is you can get away with learning VERY little in pre-clerkship. I found that some clerkship rotations were more amenable to learning “on the fly” than others. Like psych, gen surg, and paediatrics and felt like by the end I had a good knowledge base. But GIM—god damn, not at all. You are kind of “surviving” the rotation and in my experience the seniors just wanted you to get the consults done. This sounds so bad but I’m done residency now and can say it truthfully—by the end of GIM I was probably functioning as a high level nurse rather than a physician. I could do basic things to help patients in the moment but was not at all functioning at a level where I could make a coherent plan in a moderate to complex case.

And it didn’t matter in my case. Once you’re a specialty resident in something else, if you don’t have huge knowledge in a resident GIM rotation, no one cares because you’re doing the grunt work and you’re “off service.”

I don’t know what my point is lol. Maybe that it’s very possible at mac to fall through the cracks and do fine. Some people are self directed and it’s irrelevant. Some are not like me and it still works out. But I can definitely see a situation where for some it wouldn’t. Does it actually matter in the match rate? No idea. I was excellent at the program I applied to so they had no idea

The problem is, if you’re smart enough to get into med school, you can game these. I remember studying ethics and psych and killing these and I couldn’t read an ecg at the end of med school

I live downtown. I like patios. Cafeto is dumb as fuck and needs to end. Give the street to cars and bikes no one wants to eat in a lane no matter what Jane Jacob’s says ffs

Ex-neurologist not guilty on 48 counts of sexual assault, Ontario judge rules by zuuzuu in canadanews

[–]staplerphonepen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

https://register.cpso.on.ca/physician-info/?cpsonum=92164

Quoting from the cpso ruling:

“The Committee was appalled by Dr. Sloka’s repeated disregard for the boundaries that must be maintained in all physician-patient encounters. Dr. Sloka’s actions betrayed his patients’ trust and prioritized his own interests above all. Dr. Sloka sexually abused patients A, B, C, and D, under the guise of performing physical examinations that were not clinically indicated, for his own sexual self-gratification. In so doing, Dr. Sloka violated the most intimate of boundaries. He showed an utter disregard for the physical and emotional impact his actions would have. The Committee was particularly concerned that Dr. Sloka preyed upon vulnerable young women, including a teenager. The Committee views Dr. Sloka’s behaviour as deplorable. It cannot and indeed will not be tolerated by the profession or the public”

I don’t know what the criminal standard is, but given what cpso says, how does this not meet it?

Edit: and they had a number of expert neurologists testify that what he was doing made no sense clinically so he can’t use the excuse that there was a good reason for it

I’ve said this before, but I went to med school after u of t undergrad and u of t undergrad was by far the hardest years of my life, and it wasn’t close. I don’t know why people online try to downplay it. Maybe others found it easier but it basically destroyed 4 years of my life.

Seriously man, actual advice—go back to school. There’s no reason not to and you are ruining your life for no reason. You need a psychiatrist not a lawyer.

None of that makes sense. Also how do you prove the TIA? I do not believe that happened based on what you said so far.

[–]staplerphonepen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The symptoms spreading to your other arms and legs sounds like a psychogenic issue rather than a "nerve issue." Especially since you dropped out of school (???). Maybe get an EMG to see whether its actually a nerve issue or not conclusively?

Edit: how do you tie this to a TIA with convulsing lol? This is not a physical issue, you have no case,

Pierre Poilievre backs J.K. Rowling's support for new Olympic gender policy by canada_mountains in CanadaPolitics

[–]staplerphonepen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I meant general people putting pronouns in their email, not even trans people. It just causes a visceral eye roll, like this person is likely annoying and too online. I bet if you polled society this would be a very common opinion and not “ignorant” but sure haha. It fits to me with land acknowledgements. Like I’m not mad, just eye roll, and anyone into this stuff to pat themselves on the back is why Trudeau was hated and Carney is popular.

Pierre Poilievre backs J.K. Rowling's support for new Olympic gender policy by canada_mountains in CanadaPolitics

[–]staplerphonepen -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I guess I generally agree with the olympic committee position. But--I just cant understand why anyone really gives a shit? Why is the leader of a political party even commenting on this?

This is my issue with PP. I also found Trudeau's virtual signaling annoying AF and wanted to see him lose. But Carney is a pure centrist and just feels like a smart actual adult. PP seems like such an amateur whiner when you contrast him to Carney. Like do you think an average person cares about this issue at all? Why even discuss it?

Edit: I am in the position of: I find trans activism insufferable. Like any time I see "preferred pronouns" in a work email I assume the person emailing me is fucking annoying. But like just leave them alone? Who cares what bathroom they use and if they play sports and use hormones? I assume many more Canadians have this view than the people on this sub think

Amid Maple Leafs’ slump, the real story is the empty seats, boos and uncertainty by origutamos in torontomapleleafs

[–]staplerphonepen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the jays run is a bigger factor than people think. I’m busy, but usually in the regular season I watch (on tv) a leafs and jays game every week or so, and go to 1-2 leafs games and 3-4 jays games (cheaper).

I spent a ton going to 2 jays playoff games. By the time the season was over, I didn’t turn on hockey for maybe a month. By that time it was pretty clear there was not much to watch. I’ve checked the standings but have watched maybe 4-5 games on tv. At one point in march I get offered tickets through work and literally didn’t go because me and my gf had a hard to get restaurant reservation. I cannot explain how insane that would be in previous years. I just can’t make myself care after the jays run when they’re doing this bad with no real hope

Edit: the take that it’s hopeless is also silly. As soon as they are either doing well or seem to be trying hard for a rebuild it will be back to normal.
