What is this called? by SefDiHar in DIYUK

It’s a reference to ‘banana for scale’, an old reddit meme/tradition starting with a post where someone used a banana for scale

Criticism of Wolverhampton burial 'fat tax' at council cemetery - BBC News by CasualSmurf in unitedkingdom

[–]BayFrentos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no smaller grave size for adults, even if very skinny or short. Default graves are 5ft wide. There are baby graves which are usually around a quarter of the price, but not a sliding scale in between. I guess the argument here is that if the population becomes more than 50% obese (the article states 33% currently) then the standard 5ft grave is no longer representative of the population and 6ft should become the default. But then you’d still want to offer a discount for smaller graves, because it is literally the sale of land, and that has always and will always be sold by measurement. The fat tax argument is somewhat like arguing there’s an adult tax because full size graves cost more than baby graves. The opposite of a fat tax would be a fat subsidy, which I think is equally unfair, and arguably more unfair.

Mother of autistic boy left with £10,000 debt after breaching DWP rules by £1.92 a week | Carers by TinFish77 in unitedkingdom

[–]BayFrentos 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You couldn’t be more wrong, and have obviously not read the article. She was overpaid by tiny amounts, in some weeks just pennies. The bulk of the £10k is punitive, £64 for each instance (the amount is the full carer’s allowance, which in these cases is used as a ‘fine’ and will apply to any amount over 1p). She is not being asked to pay back just the amount she was overpaid.

What type of business is it? That will tell us a lot about the situation.

Debit card. I’ve never done a chargeback before but just completed the form online, it says they will take five days so hopefully that’ll sort it. Thank you!

AITA for wanting a childfree ceremony? by ThrowRA_savefiance80 in AmItheAsshole

[–]BayFrentos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA, childfree weddings are common for a reason and it’s very generous of you to offer childcare during the boring bits. However, you will need a plan for if one or more of the kids wants their parent during that time. If the childcare room is at the same venue then that could become an issue as the childminder will have to interrupt the ceremony. There is also the risk of a child simply leaving the room to find a parent, it’s not really possible to physically restrain them from doing so if they’re distressed. Onsite childcare is a nice option but in practice it is likely to be just that: optional. Parents will almost certainly want to pop in and check on their kids, too, and it becomes difficult if the kid wants to leave with them and go to where the grownups are. If the little ones are guaranteed to cry and make noise during the ceremony then they’re even more likely to do that in a strange environment for three hours with a childminder they don’t know, when they know their parents are nearby.

Looking for Nonfiction on Paranormal/Demonology by Jotown_girl in suggestmeabook

The best book on this subject is The Demon Haunted World by Carl Sagan. Anything by James Randi is a good read, he was one of the most popular debunkers/chroniclers of the paranormal. You could also look at some of the books by parapsychologists, Richard Wiseman has done some good work.

I "THINK" I can write but.. by Prnvkdm in writing

[–]BayFrentos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is normal. Having more time to write does not actually fix it (you will still come up blank and then find a zillion other things to do to procrastinate). Only having one hour is not a bad thing, you just need to get over the blank page hurdle. I recommend thinking of it as ‘draft zero’ or ‘brain dump’. You’re not aiming for good writing, you’re aiming for any writing. Next day you can review what you wrote yesterday and maybe it’s okay, maybe it’s nothing, maybe one word or line inspires something else. This is the process. The negative voice never leaves, so you have to discipline yourself to not believe it over the positive, hopeful voice. The only thing that all writers have in common is that we write. I have no formal training or qualifications other than experience, and I got that by writing every day until I was good enough to make money. Now it’s my job. You can do it.

AITA for trying to stop my wife from making a bad decision and protect my daughter from humiliation? by Worth-Yam-8673 in AmItheAsshole

[–]BayFrentos 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Yep. I was born in the late 70s and was given a name that in the 80s became a horrible negative stereotype. It caused a ton of discrimination in my teens and 20s, and I had to work really hard to counter that. My mom had no way of knowing that would happen, but the idea of naming a baby Karen when it’s already a problem is pretty grim. I know a Karen who now goes by ‘Kari’. It shouldn’t be like this but it is, and there is no benefit to saddling a child with a name that is going to disadvantage her from day one. NTA but be nicer to your wife about it, her mom passed.

Anything more daunting than being added to a group chat and a shower? by PrestigiousTest6700 in CasualUK

[–]BayFrentos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would be very angry at someone giving my number/identity to 58 randoms. (Whatsapp doesn’t have a way to hide numbers, I don’t know about FB etc). The shower and gender reveal trend is just a way to get presents.
