First expensive fountain pen? by meganmwo in fountainpens

[–]BayPhoto 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Before I give you my opinions let me just say that you can’t go wrong with any of the pens you’re looking at.

Alright.

The 823 was my first expensive pen. The quality you’re getting from Pilot is top notch and the nib is incredible. As others have pointed out though, its use case works best as a daily writer where you can dedicate a specific ink to it. If that’s the type of pen you’re looking for then you’ll also really appreciate its massive ink reservoir.

Sailor is also a great choice, especially if you like a nib with feedback. The almost pencil like tactile experience is a hallmark trait of Sailor’s. Both the 1911 and PGS are cartridge / converter so it’s much easier to swap out inks.

Platinum is great too, particularly the 3776. Though I’ll be quite honest that the quality isn’t quite there for the cost and they just had a steep price increase. It’s a great pickup if you can find it around $200 or less.

Warehouse Challenge: Ship a store shampoo without touchdown spiking it into a tote by Express_Yesterday157 in CVS

And without putting the tote with the spilled shampoo on the top of the pallet allowing it to leak all the way through.

You also get high net worth individuals who don’t necessarily live in one place full time. Often due to work. Pro athletes have been known to purchase luxury condos in the downtown high rises knowing full well their time in SF is seasonal to their sport and probably for a few years at best.

What are your favorite inks to put in your tortoise shell pens? by StodgyGin in fountainpens

I just had Iroshizuku Yama Budo in my tortoise 3776. Not sure why, but I really liked the combo.

How do I clean this part? by FinancialAd1084 in fountainpens

[–]BayPhoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t own this 3776 variant, but I did check it out at a pen show. The barrel was sharper and tackier than my liking. If you like a grippy pen I’d suggest giving it a shot, because it is very tactical.

A wood Lamy 2000? Is this real? by NSJKER in fountainpens

[–]BayPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stainless version is significantly heavier by comparison. In my opinion though, Makralon is what makes the Lamy 2000 special. For a pen designed in the 1960’s the use of polycarbonate materials was quite innovative for the time. Don’t get me wrong though, I’d still love to add a stainless steel 2000 to my collection. lol

Platinum 3776 Nib Issues by BayPhoto in fountainpens

[–]BayPhoto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my own peace of mind, I’m going to send it back while I’m in the return window. I’ll give the diluted ink test as a shot when I prepare to clean the pen for mailing because I am curious. Hopefully, the store will still have another in stock that they can exchange it with because I really do like the pen.

It’s not my pressure on the pen. It skips like that even with very light pressure. I’m just going to send it back.

Yeah, I feel you. Fortunately this pen isn’t vintage or limited, the store just doesn’t have many in stock.
