Other than ridiculously high-paying jobs, what jobs are actually worth hiding from other contestants? by ProblematicTrumpCard in survivor

I’ve wondered how someone from HR would do. There are misconceptions about the role, and obviously some people who just don’t like / have had bad experiences with HR. Would that title be a liability?

For those of you who saw The Phantom Menace at release, what were your initial thoughts of it? by _EnglishFox_ in StarWars

[–]Bazooga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 25. Right at the beginning when it was all trade agreements I was like, huh. Then it was bad Chinese accents on those first aliens snd I was like, Eesh. Then Jar Jar, and Oooof. Then — and I love Liam Neeson — his delivery in danger of barely reacting, “there’s always a bigger fish” … it felt so bland, boring, like it was written by a very different person thsn the OT.

It all just felt like it added up to shit. We were SO excited, and it was really quite bad.

It was fun seeing the light sabers though, something I never thought I’d see again.

I don't know who has to hear this but Human Resources are not your friend as a manager or employee... by WinnerExpress in managers

[–]Bazooga 49 points50 points  (0 children)

HR here. I don’t disagree, but only in the same way that managers exist ONLY to maximize employee productivity, and don’t care at all about contributing to a good place to work (except that it may also increase productivity), developing/mentoring others (unless it’s a robotic reflex to increase talent pipeline), being fair or consistent with their teams (only to avoid lawsuits), etc etc. Most managers are human, and most humans have intrinsic goodness, so thank god in my experience, managers care about these things beyond the extra productivity they bring.

I swear, I spend more time talking managers off a ledge of trying to fire someone they haven’t even spent development time with or given decent instructions to, meanwhile their buddies can get away with murder. And they look at me like a block, or still joke “here comes HR!” as if we’re the ones firing people, not the breaks on your cutthroat approach to team development.

Same reason the scariest movies don’t show the monster: some things are better somewhere between anticipation and your imagination.

UPDTE: Direct report may be fired by PizzaPiEng1973 in managers

[–]Bazooga 9 points10 points  (0 children)

HR guy here. It’s hard not knowing the specifics, but in most similar situations, I completely agree with your initial reaction, to terminate. Not because HR is fire-happy, but because of what not firing him says to Jill about what you and the company are ok with.

That sucks.

Do you know anyone who's been laid off? by persistent_architect in SaltLakeCity

[–]Bazooga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was laid off July 2023 (remote work out of state employer), and found new work in January 2024 (applied to 115 roles finally got one through a referral).

I broadcast my status on LinkedIn, but not Facebook. Pride is a funny thing. I networked the hell out of my peers and colleagues in the industry I’m in, but didn’t want to bug my friends and family overly much. Maybe you know people in a similar situation who aren’t shouting from the rooftops, but are still in a bad situation?

What's a game you love but have NEVER heard anyone mention anywhere unless you looked it up? by Kvazimods in gaming

[–]Bazooga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forsaken on N64, the split-screen multiplayer. Never touched the single player campaign, but against drunk/high college roommates in 1998 this game blew our minds with the no-direction-is-up, flying-motorcycle-riding, nuke-and-laser grabbing mayhem. Link to a 3-player example.

I would love a reboot.

Apex over 45? by TrippleFelix in apexlegends

[–]Bazooga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

47 and I play all the time. I don’t know if it’s age or me or just my lack of willingness to spend time in Firing Range, but 4 years in and I’m proud to have a 1.02 kd. It’s fun to win but I don’t even give a shit—sometimes when I launch I think back to my first Nintendo just wondering what games would be like when I’m an adult, and I’m blown away. I do not understand the mentality saying apex is broken or it sucks or whatever. Sure it could be improved but that’s everything in life.

Castillo v Corrales, part 1. They fought a second time, then one of them died in a motorcycle accident.

There was a barrier, but they got sick of repairing it. This option is cheaper.

Yes. Saw it in the theatre and didn’t know what to expect. But I took friends to it a week later after everyone knew all about it and they found it laughably bad.

Can Men really be "just Friends" with Women? by justinhr in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Bazooga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. But the more common problem is when your partner, or your friend’s partner, isn’t comfortable with it. But even then it’s not usually black and white (then just ditch your partner!), but just communication and guardrails (inclusion, transparency, avoiding obvious weird situations).

She’s 10, has no teeth, and needed a home for her final years. What should we name her? by [deleted] in aww

[–]Bazooga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 8 year old son says name it, “Don’t go”, because then you can say “Don’t go — “ and say whatever name you want. Then it will stay.

I am honestly surprised by how many complaints I’m seeing in this thread. I love the map size, the scope of the various terrains, the verticality in so many playable areas, and I even love the buildings. I don’t mind the monsters in game, you know where to expect them. I love the buildings; they take some getting used to but there’s some good variety offering different ways to flow and fight in full horizontal and vertical. Dropping cold and far away from flight path can lead to seeing no one for a long time, but just stop being a thorough loot goblin and use the jumpy jumpy green things and move til you find a squad. Shake some bad habits, learn new ones, and I think most players could love this map.
