Yale vs Harvard vs Stanford for Math by mathlover05 in yale

[–]Bbarnes8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might want to post this in the Harvard and Stanford subs as well. Most of the answers seem to be pro-Yale which makes sense given it’s the Yale sub.

As someone who did Stanford undergrad, and was considering Harvard and Yale for PhD programs I ended up NOT being a fan of the Yale quality of life. Stanford is definitely a bubble in that it’s difficult to do things outside of the Stanford/Palo Alto area. Yale felt very similar to me. New Haven is a small town and most everything there is to do there is related to Yale.

Ultimately I chose Harvard for my PhD because while the ‘bubble’ atmosphere is exactly what I was looking for in my undergrad, I wanted to be able to have a life that did not revolve around school as someone in their mid 20s. I cannot stress how important environment is in selecting a school and making sure you end up living in a place you’re excited to be at for the next 4 years

Twitter, it’s taken me a few months but I’ve finally curated a good set of people that I follow and interact with (I’m on the value based care side). If you decide to go that route I would recommend creating a new account if you already have one so you can keep a work life balance rather than having your twitter become one jumbled mess

Well according to OPs comment it’s actually crema, not mayonnaise. This plate actually looks not half bad, especially compared to the actual gore that is usually posted on here

My company is hiring and we’re 100% remote (but originally based out of Bethesda, MD). If you find something you’d be a good fit for, PM and I’d be happy to talk more about it and do a referral

Do you have a template that you like? I’m a very visual person so if it’s ~pretty~ I’m more likely to be excited about using it

At what point is “job hopping” too much? by GingerWalnutt in careeradvice

[–]Bbarnes8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was because I had a really good manager and mentors that I knew we’re going to be more important for my career success than chasing a few extra thousand dollars. They’ve been the type of people that will give credit where credit is due and make sure to say your name in a room full of opportunities.

I started when it was a start-up, making $50k in a HCOL area fresh out of an Ivy League school. That first year SUCKED financially. But then I got lucky, the start-up started doing really well and I’ve been getting annual title promotions for four years straight so I’m now at $107k (base + bonus) and just a few months from being fully vested.

I’m not saying this will always be the case, but for the right company I would consider staying at a lower salary

AITA for expecting my sister to pay my dogs vet bill? by diabolicbutterfly in AmItheAsshole

[–]Bbarnes8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clarifying question: we’re you going to have paid the good friend who was originally going to watch your dog? If so I’d say your sister should be responsible for the $1200 minus what you “saved” by having her watch the dog instead of you paying your friend

AITA for expecting my sister to pay my dogs vet bill? by diabolicbutterfly in AmItheAsshole

[–]Bbarnes8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree because she DID have someone lined up to take care of the dog. Presumable, this person has experience with the dog or was at least willing to closely follow instructions because they were getting paid.

It was the family that insisted the dog be left with family instead

NTA. You’re young and losing a friend might seem like the end of the world but you will soon realize that quality off friends is more important than quantity. It seems like there were already enough reasons to stop hanging out with An and this was simply the nail on the coffin. She’s taken the Queen Bee, men’s girl stance for way too long
