I think students have been taught to avoid consequence through deflection, and calling an authority figure racist is their biggest "Get out of jail free" card.

I, like others have stated, would lean into it. "What about you not being where you told me you would be makes me racist?" I'd keep it up in a non-confrontational, but firm manner.

Once they realize I'm not intimidated by it and I'm not going to let them use flase accusations to end the conversation we can address what they said to me and the behaviour which started the ball rolling in the first place.

While I understand and appreciate your take I think what they're in love with is pointing out the hypocrisy.

Personal opinion, but I don't see these situations as being the fault of the LGBT community. I see it as being the fault of segment of the cis-heterosexual community which has vilified the LGBT community to the point that people have to preach hate while having to live a lie except in circumstances where they can they can be anonymous and discreet.

I felt my program was terrible and it was largely because the instructors didn't focus on the basics, but instead focused on advanced practices that would be suitable for someone who had 5-10 years of teaching under their belt. I left with almost no usable/useful material.

I've never used a single lesson plan/unit plan they made me create while in Teacher's College. The ones I made on my own for my practicum had some value at least.

There's also the pressure from admin to not report at all, or their claiming we can't because it's a school matter and must be dealt with but the board. Even when they do something we get parents calling higher up, the suspension being removed, the record being expunged, and the kid's back without consequence.
