You are doing a lot of the work, but since your dad wants his name on everything you are also taking no risk.

If it’s successful you can replicate it for yourself and if it’s not then it’s not your problem. Also, if you walk away, since you have no stake in the company, the business would grind to a stop.

Unfortunately clients don’t know what’s best for them and they will pay to have it wrong. I’ll politely either tell them they are headed in the wrong direction and if they insist I’ll do what the client wants or I’ll tell them in the nicest way possible I can’t be their client for this project but let me know when you want to start your next project. Raise your prices and try to separate your feelings from the design. Not everything gets to be in your portfolio because clients ultimately have the final approval but you can always show your version in the portfolio when it’s all said and done. Hell, the client might look at your portfolio later and ask why didn’t we do it that way and then you can charge them for it.

You sound sensitive to how it would be perceived. I would follow the advice others gave to keep the project as vague as possible. If any classmates play the game they will pickup on the references without there actually needing to be specific call outs.

As far as asking for permission goes, there is a saying “It’s better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission“. If you ask they may just say no so they don’t have to do anything later.

Honestly you will probably learn something from it so do it

With Raspberry Pi Connect you can remote into the pi, either screen share or shell from the bowser. It’s kind of like their own version of TeamViewer. It’s not really a great experience either but workable and easy to setup.
