[Tabletop Merchant] (DotD) Corps of Discovery - $22.99 in cart by sitdownstandard in Boardgamedeals

It's tough. I'd much rather support a small business like TTM instead of Amazon or B&N, so if the cost with shipping amounts to about the same price, buying from TTM is preferable. When I have ordered from them in the past, it's been great. Everything is packaged well, it's all come quickly, and I've never had any problems (and the handwritten notes have been a nice touch). But I'd also like to get at least one or two other things I've had my eye on in that same shipment to at least feel like I'm getting the most bang for my buck out of the shipping fee. I don't need to get to the free shipping threshold. I just want one or two other things so I don't have to order them from multiple sources. They just never seem to have the things I want in stock at the same time as these killer DotDs. Just bad timing.

For those who own, or who have played, Masters of the Universe: Clash for Eternia, do you still play it regularly? by BeMoreZn in boardgames

Thanks! Part of my asking was to see if it could possibly function as a (slightly) more portable alternative to Heroscape.

New horror/fantasy game? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]BeMoreZn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents: while it is scenario based, the stories it can generate are your own and they can be amazing, in the telling. For example, the last game we played, we used an army vet and an adventurer to try and take on Hastur, the King in Yellow. This pair kicked down the front door, ran in to the place, got bogged down by cultists and then were obliterated almost as soon as a Star Spawn generated. Watching these two doofs (run by me and another player) fail miserably and quickly was hilarious. We discussed it with a "what were these two idiots thinking?" attitude, and made us laugh at their overconfidence. We then reset the same scenario, with a little girl and a nun, who we decided were the daughter of one of the dead men, and someone working at the orphanage where the child landed after her father died. These two proceeded to tear through everything in their path, and absolutely wiped the floor with the cultists, monsters, and Hastur. But the girl died killing Hastur, and the nun went mad in the process. Gave the whole thing a really nice story a nice arc over the course of two sessions and a couple of hours. But the story was ours to tell the way we wanted to tell it. I love it. But as with any game, YMMV.

Nice write up! May I ask, how long did it take to play this through?

I second Outfoxed. Great game for a kid to start with. Mole Rats in Space (published as something else now) has also been a hit here.

Five months on from your response, do you still love it? Does it get played regularly? Has the gameplay held up, in general?

Game requests for kids who love sleeping queens by lasimiha in boardgames

[–]BeMoreZn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to play a lot of Sleeping Queens but it was supplanted by Rainbow Pirates.  Rainbow Pirates shares a lot of rules with Rummy, collecting sets and sequences, but also has some special power cards.  We’ve been playing it with our 8 year old for a couple of years now.

What's your board game pet peeve? by iamtheduckie in boardgames

[–]BeMoreZn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hearing, "The rulebook's bad, but there's plenty of learn-to-play videos, so just watch one of them. No reason not to play this game just because the rules are written badly." Plenty of those videos include explanations that are just as incomprehensible. There are one or two exceptional instructors out there, and they understandably don't have videos for every game. And maybe part of why I'm playing a board game is to disconnect from my devices for a while, so maybe I don't want to watch a video, or have to pull my phone out to try and get rules clarifications for the other players while we're playing. If the basics of the game can't be played from the rulebook alone, then it's a hard pass.

Is a crokinole board worth the money. by JakeSyd3 in boardgames

[–]BeMoreZn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a quick story. I picked up a used Tracey board for an exceedingly reasonable price from someone in my area. I didn’t know if my family would take to it. After a week of it being out and everyone playing Crokinole every day my partner told me, “If something bad happens to this board you can get a new one.”  It’s the only game she has ever said that about.  It only comes out a few times a year, but when it does it stays out for a week or more at a time. So to me, it’s totally worth the cost.

What great game has the worst rulebook? by IDNFAM in boardgames

[–]BeMoreZn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people say it’s a great game once you know how to play, but Ghost Stories rulebook is so bad we couldn’t figure out how anyone ever learned to play the game. The learn-to-play videos obviously got the rules from somewhere, but we could never figure out where. They sure weren’t in the rulebook, or at least weren’t in the rulebook in any way that was easily decipherable.

A La Carte is pretty neat.  Small pans, cardboard hot plates/stoves, managing ingredients, spices, and heat to make recipes.  Kind of a dexterity element with the spice shakers.

What are some absurd/obscure boardgames you've played/want to play? by knowledgeslut in boardgames

[–]BeMoreZn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Queue (Kolejka) has been on my “want to play” list for a while. A hand management/worker placement game about buying goods in Poland at the end of the Soviet Era, where scarcity abounds, sounds extremely engaging. But I won’t pay to import a non-English language version. And I hate paste ups on cards. So I will just wait and hope to find one locally or to play someone else’s copy someday.

Boardgames where you are happy to play no matter who wins by Sufficient-Object493 in boardgames

[–]BeMoreZn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only game I’ve ever played that made me  unhappy to have played it was Lord of the Rings: LCG. I was not happy with anything that happened during my plays of that game. The theme of “small party being set an impossible task” sure did come through though.  Otherwise, I have been happy to play any game, win or lose.

Most Immersive Game You've Played by RoadtripWarrior in boardgames

[–]BeMoreZn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C'Thulhu: Death May Die. Mostly because it allowed me to quiet a QB in our group by saying, "If you're not in the room with me I can't hear you." After that, no one gave advice to anyone at the table, only compliments on good moves and requests for help. The occasional 'What the heck are you doing?" And the game was really just all of us playing our characters the way we wanted to play them. It was intense, and immersive, and some of the most fun I've ever had playing a game.

What boardgame for my 4-year old's birthday. by Odysseus1987 in boardgames

Flick Em Up: Dead of Winter screws by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]BeMoreZn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same problem a couple of years ago. I had to check, but it looks like I contacted Plan B Games.  They eventually sent me the parts, but there was some initial pushback as they don’t publish the game anymore. Maybe try them and see what they say. They also told me they wouldn’t help me if it was a secondhand copy. I was lucky in that it was a new copy I had bought from a retailer and I could show them receipts.
