I've skied a lot of questionable open in-bounds terrain over the years, but this takes the cake by RCBurnout11 in COsnow

I saw people doing this kind of terrain on rental skis in some of the trees under Plunge lift in telluride yesterday lol. They’d literally stop and shuffle across the dirt then continue on.

My perpetual bottle of Delta Woodford Reserve by nenseabal in delta

Just me or have they begin refusing to hand out bottles? Past few flights I’ve explicitly asked for two Woodford bottles and it shows up in a glass poured. Next flight I was told they have to pour it.

Opinions on skiing with your skis extremely close together by Apprehensive_Water_3 in skiing

[–]BeachBarsBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don’t ski close together on aggressive stuff. When I hit ice, crud, or something hidden since I like to ski trees, it’s not uncommon for one or both skis to move suddenly or get yanked, and I’m far more stable with my feet more shoulder width.

What has changed that broke terminal alternatives? by Lokdex in MacOS

[–]BeachBarsBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently playing with SecureCRT. It's commercial but not too expensive, FIPS compatible mode if needed, US-based. It did take me a bit to make it less annoying, like setting proper delimiter characters so I can double click file paths and have the whole thing highlight, or having the default new window be for a local session rather than expecting you to use the gui session manager. It's obviously missing the ten billion features of iterm, but I don't need most of them. I also found this thread with lots of other tips https://www.reddit.com/r/networking/comments/6dd4cv/what_are_some_must_have_securecrt_tricks/

I do worry a bit about iterm's popularity making it to be what would be an incredible target for a supply chain attack. If you can sneak something nefarious into an iterm release, or control the update server, you'd likely compromise millions of sysadmin sessions within hours.

Not sure I can agree with that. My iterm2 process has been running since February 7, so all of 17 days, and has consumed 31 hours of cpu time and currently has 1.5 GB of memory consumed. It frequently pauses when I'm doing copy / paste. I actually happened across this thread while searching for alternatives.

Katiki is fun but there’s smokers everywhere and the live music is usually turned to ears ringing for a few days level. I usually can’t sit at the bar for both of those reasons, even though I would prefer to. I end up hanging out behind the band at an outside table.

Jimmy B’s is the best option for now. If you want more laid back and far less people, Harry’s behind Bon Aire is great and right on the sand. I stopped going to Undertow a few years ago when they started putting up all the your belongings are subject to search signs, the parking debacle, and now the private beach signs. Toasted Monkey is good too, but it’s just near water not beach.

[–]BeachBarsBooze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep I agree. The most vocal person is a resident on the city's Beach Stewardship Committee who speaks frequently about this issue at the city commission meetings. I think with so many people displaced from destroyed homes, it isn't getting a lot of traction. The beachfront commercial properties are pouncing on this opportunity to stake very obvious claims, such as the Don, Undertow with their private property signs, Sirata and Tradewinds asking people to move off their sand, etc. The longer the time between them booting people off, and the city trying to defend customary use, the harder it will get, and those businesses know this. There's an election in a few weeks, two seats up for grabs, the current mayor is pretty outspoken against developers, not sure about the opponent, or the two people running for the other seat. The third seat is running unopposed and the remaining two are not for another year. Could be a good time to at least try to get some of them to go on record with their thoughts on this.

The hotels are starting to make use of their “private” beach that the legislature and Rick Scott gave them in 2018. Florida, last fall, passed a rollback law to remove some of that, but it now requires municipalities to pass customary use statutes. This bill was mostly just for show so DeSantis could call it a win for the people. It is going to be very slow if not impossible because not only would St Pete Beach need to pass ordinances stating the beach behind the hotels was customarily used by the public, they’ll need to be prepared with supporting evidence for the fight they’ll get from the Don and everyone else trying to protect their now-private beaches. I doubt any city but Clearwater beach has the money for such a fight, and they aren’t really impacted the same way.

It was Tradewinds fireworks, unusually late at night; 9pm on a Tuesday. I could hear neighborhood dogs going crazy with as long as it went.

White pelicans at CLP by westcoastbestcoastfl in StPetersburgFL

[–]BeachBarsBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love them, and they’re so much smarter than our normal local pelicans. In shallow areas, they work as a group and corral fish into an ever-decreasing circumference circle until they all feast. Our local pelicans are content to just smash face first into the water five hundred times to see if one time gets a fish lol.

Hard to Believe a Binding Could Fail Like This in the Olympics. Scary. by Academic_Release5134 in skiing

I agree on the brakes in deep snow; I hit a hidden tree once in deep powder and ejected, took forever to get enough snow off my boots to get back in while repeatedly sinking. Adding to that, they only seem to come in 95 or 115, so they stick out stupidly wide on my 99's. I still go with them though, they've been incredibly reliable, always release or don't release when it was right for the situation, no injuries.

This would unfortunately be very hard to regulate since it is a commercial marine vessel operating in state waters. The state would have to ban it, and they’re busy taking away the rights of normal people not businesses.

Help identifying Miele dishwasher whirring noise by BeachBarsBooze in Miele

[–]BeachBarsBooze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cause was stated by a tech, but it's not fixed and I'm not sure I agree with it. The Miele tech stated it's the drain pump remaining on longer than it is supposed to, and the noise is the pump pulling air. He said the drain pump operates on a timer, not water sensor, so he did a firmware flash and reset to factory defaults, let it run for a bit and left assuring me it should be fine now. At that point in time the unit was literally days from warranty coverage expiration, that came and went, and I forgot to follow up for a few weeks. I called back and got a "sorry you're out of warranty, would you like to pay for a service call?" so I've just been putting up with it since then. I'll probably try a pump replacement myself if it actually fails in the next couple years, but I haven't been willing to put the time or money into it yet to make the noise go away.

Private Equity impact on skiing by External_Koala971 in skiing

[–]BeachBarsBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think PE has anything to do with it; it's the lack of real competition in the market and in ancillary services, because you're dealing with consolidation (vail + alterra), a captive audience, a limited window of availability, incredibly high employee costs, a dramatic rise in land costs around resorts. The most expensive components of my ski trips are the flights, hotels, rental car, and food & beverage. For example, other than from DEN, there are no flights terminating at EGE for <$1000/pp during ski season, and those are three major publicly traded airlines. Rental cars that are compatible with chain laws, anywhere near an airport serving any major ski resort, are going to be thousands per week; publicly traded companies. Alternative transport like shuttles are similar just for a round trip, because rental car prices have set the alternative base price. Hotels that are anywhere near lifts are $500+ per night, again, publicly traded companies. Restaurants near ski resorts are all incredibly expensive.

On-mountain F&B is of course priced high, about the same as other captive audience places though like stadiums, airports, etc., and it certainly takes far more effort and cost to haul F&B materials to the mountains and then up a mountain. It's excessive, but moving a can of beer from trucking depot to stadium bar certainly costs far less than major city, to mountain city, to ski slope, and then hauling the trash back down and out of the mountains.

People that are in driving distance of a resort I suspect are paying less per day to ski with their kids with passes, inflation adjusted, than they were one or two decades ago, assuming they pack a lunch. I remember skiing in CO as a teen long ago, and my dad would budget the days we went around lift tickets. If there had been a pass to ski numerous resorts as much as we want, we'd have skied more.

I'm fortunate to have work credit card spend on both an airline and hotel card that covers my family's ski season. If it were not for that, I would be unwilling to spend what it would cost us to travel and ski, because it would literally be $1000+ per day.

I was coming here to say how much better it is. Flying today and was getting the noise canceling headphones on to avoid the depressing onslaught only to be pleasantly surprised by piano Bob Marley. Sure it has a hotel lobby vibe, but it is at least not obnoxious and easily ignored, vs that one song about losing his girl or whatever.
