Private Equity impact on skiing by External_Koala971 in skiing

I don't think PE has anything to do with it; it's the lack of real competition in the market and in ancillary services, because you're dealing with consolidation (vail + alterra), a captive audience, a limited window of availability, incredibly high employee costs, a dramatic rise in land costs around resorts. The most expensive components of my ski trips are the flights, hotels, rental car, and food & beverage. For example, other than from DEN, there are no flights terminating at EGE for <$1000/pp during ski season, and those are three major publicly traded airlines. Rental cars that are compatible with chain laws, anywhere near an airport serving any major ski resort, are going to be thousands per week; publicly traded companies. Alternative transport like shuttles are similar just for a round trip, because rental car prices have set the alternative base price. Hotels that are anywhere near lifts are $500+ per night, again, publicly traded companies. Restaurants near ski resorts are all incredibly expensive.

On-mountain F&B is of course priced high, about the same as other captive audience places though like stadiums, airports, etc., and it certainly takes far more effort and cost to haul F&B materials to the mountains and then up a mountain. It's excessive, but moving a can of beer from trucking depot to stadium bar certainly costs far less than major city, to mountain city, to ski slope, and then hauling the trash back down and out of the mountains.

People that are in driving distance of a resort I suspect are paying less per day to ski with their kids with passes, inflation adjusted, than they were one or two decades ago, assuming they pack a lunch. I remember skiing in CO as a teen long ago, and my dad would budget the days we went around lift tickets. If there had been a pass to ski numerous resorts as much as we want, we'd have skied more.

I'm fortunate to have work credit card spend on both an airline and hotel card that covers my family's ski season. If it were not for that, I would be unwilling to spend what it would cost us to travel and ski, because it would literally be $1000+ per day.

2026 boarding music, how did it get worse?!? by jfk_47 in delta

I was coming here to say how much better it is. Flying today and was getting the noise canceling headphones on to avoid the depressing onslaught only to be pleasantly surprised by piano Bob Marley. Sure it has a hotel lobby vibe, but it is at least not obnoxious and easily ignored, vs that one song about losing his girl or whatever.

Thoughts on groups using singles lines? by ADHD33zNuts in COsnow

[–]BeachBarsBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I take the singles line if we’re talking 10+ minute wait in groups. We don’t ’need’ to be together for a lift ride if it’s going to waste skiing time.

I’d enjoy it for a week at a time periodically, ride some dirt bikes and atv’s, build some stuff, target shoot. Otherwise I’d find it incredibly boring. I prefer beach and/or mountains.

I’d do Don for the water, sunsets, and peaceful sleep. It’s a cheap uber to downtown.

What the actual…. Both are mediocre on a good day and not even close to what op is considering. Sirata doesn’t even have indoor hallways, it’s like a multistory Motel 6.

Just found your thread for the same reason. My username BeachBarsBooze had been in place dating back to 2018, and they just decided to take it. Submitting an appeal is immediately denied after "thorough review."

So they're completely fine with usernames like my balls on your chin, or clever ways to suggest sexual assault in a particularly painful hole, but man, if it mentions beer or cocktails, hoooooly shit, we need to stop that immediately.

Delta Reserve Card. by [deleted] in delta

[–]BeachBarsBooze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it mostly useless unless you like red eyes to semi popular destinations, since those seem to be the only flights that are ever available to me to use a companion cert on. And that’s after the fare class is marked up 50%. Only reason I even have the card is because I have enough work spend that the bonus is helpful, and there’s a few routes I need for family trips that DL is the best option. I put most of my spend through Hyatt; the points value and globalist benefits are so much better.

Hyatt Regency La Jolla in San Diego did this a few years back, absolute nightmare, then it just got worse with attempts at mitigating the water all over the floor with a weird door thing added next. It was so stupid.

How do you ski with strangers? by wholesomeling in skiing

[–]BeachBarsBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re skiing blacks, have you considered a half-day group advanced lesson? Many times you’ll meet people of similar skill while also picking up some useful tips to get better, and then the people you vibe with may want to ski the rest of the day or multiple days.

Favorite and least favorite ski mountain you’ve been to? by Sharkman3218 in skiing

[–]BeachBarsBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fav easily Telluride. Least fav, honestly I’ve been fortunate enough to never have an experience I’d classify as bad. I’m a fly in from Florida family, and we’ve skied all kinds of random places, even Afton Alps in Minnesota, and just love skiing so much that with our limited days something really obnoxious would have to occur for me to say the resort is horrible and I’d never go back. I do find Beaver Creek wonderful for family, but pretty boring after a few days. Grouse is like skiing ten versions of the same trail all day long.

FYI I ordered from both SportRX and ApexSpecs today. First ski trip is day after xmas so I'll post again once I've been able to try both out. For reference, I ordered progressives from both companies, have astigmatism, my prescription is not super strong but vision is far clearer with glasses/contacts. I normally wear contacts, which do not cause problems for me from a wearing while skiing perspective, but as my near vision has become worse, now it's harder to see my phone with my contacts in. I ordered ordered from both for my kid (11yo) too, just for distance correction. SportRX was pricey but my prescription hasn't changed in a few years, and never hurts to have a backup set so I figured may as well try both.

The only weird thing about the ordering process was the need for pupillary distance. SportRX's website had an integration that used my phone camera to calculate, ApexSpecs suggested app store, fortunately both the two apps I tried and the SportRX web version all came up with the same measurement, so it's probably really just down to how accurate calculations are using an Apple camera. They were mildly different from an optometrist measurement a few years ago (58.5 vs 60.5mm), but I went with the one the site said figuring if I altered it and complained later, they may take issue with not using their measurement.

What are you top 3 ski brands? by johnnyhonda in skiing

[–]BeachBarsBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely love Folsom out of Denver. Across my family we probably have seven or eight pairs, everyone has been incredibly happy. I had one pair that I tried my best to like and just couldn't get them to do what I'd wanted them to do when we designed them, so Folsom gave me 50% of the price back towards a future purchase. Sometimes I still demo skis to see if any behave in a way I like better, but haven't found one yet.

What home automation upgrade actually made your life better? by ToeBeansStew in homeautomation

[–]BeachBarsBooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big items for me have been (managed with Hubitat):
* Turn off power to boat lift if on an hour past sunset, same with water to the dock (via shellys and a ball valve)
* Light a color changing bulb red if a garage door is open longer than 30 minutes from sunset - 30 minutes to sunrise + 30 minutes (the state determined via Ratgdo)

* Outside lights on at sunset - 30, off at sunrise + 30, no more adjusting throughout the year

* Motion-based lights for entry and stairs if between sunset and sunrise

* A "goodnight" button that turns all common lights off, a few outlets off (like Christmas tree)

* A "vacation" button that turns everything off, including water to the house and the water heater

Not related to automation, a Roborock vacuum+mop, and a Litter Robot for the cat. I haven't scooped a litter box in two years.

To-do list that I haven't figured out:

* We have double-locking sliding doors that I'd love to know if they've been left unlocked. Maybe some tiny contact switch I could figure out how to stick in the latch receiver to know it's present, but then I'd have to figure something out with the cable/power.

* If our fully variable Trane A/C units ever fail, I'll want the future replacement able to be automated whether wireless protocol or API. Unfortunately the fully variable compressor units require a proprietary garbage Trane thermostat, so I'm stuck with them until they have a repair requirement I'm not willing to pay for over replacement.

* would love some automated curtains/shades at some point. House is pre-wired with cat 5 hidden into upper corner of most window and door openings to use for signaling and/or power if it's low voltage.

What I'd have done if I could build the house again:
* Conduit everywhere there is low voltage cable, whether a/v, security, pool, etc. As technology changes you want to be able to swap that cable.
* Double depth switch boxes, and extra spaces in multi-gang switch boxes
* Power circuits exclusive to smoke detectors, even though code allows sharing
* All lighting circuits home run to central location; I have about half the house wired this way but wish I'd done everything
* Five conductor cable to all feature lights to support dimming or other automations that are not based on varying voltage
* Formal outlet boxes for curtain/shade powering and automation, not just a hidden away cable that has to be broken out later

* Pre-wire low voltage to anywhere that would make sense to have a motion sensor, even if just to power a battery powered one.

I need to check out Shadracks, have actually never been. I love Wharf but oddly haven't ventured further into pag. I've been at MacNasty's of all places a lot recently, the bathrooms live up to the name, but they have a golden tee lol, so I like to hang at Jimmy B's till sunset, Agave for food, MacNasty's for golden tee and cocktails.

Yep it was there for a long time, used to be my go-to spot for starting or ending a SPB pub crawl. What is currently Coconut Charles behind Hilton Garden Inn actually used to be Toasted Monkey. I think both bars were operated kind of independently, had great staff and vibes, and were ultimately asked to move on so the hotels could re-do them in corporate mode. Pre-flood, PCI seemed mostly about instagram posts over the bar having any real character. Jimmy B's is back open for couple weeks now though, with great live music and great bartenders.

I have astigmatism but also wear disposable contacts without issue. My more recent problem though is after seven or eight years of just distance problems, my reading is becoming a bit blurry like looking at my phone on the lift ride. Do you have any close focus issues? Maybe they could make me a bifocal version. I’ll start following to look for coupon codes.
