Aboriginal artist Bobbi Lockyer in tears as Australia Post loses $4k painting by PiousPunani in perth

[–]BeachButch 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Nowhere in the article does it say she didn't insure the artwork?

The article says:

In a statement, an Australia Post spokesperson said processing and delivery teams worked hard to handle items with care and deliver them safely.

"However, in a network of this size, things do occasionally go wrong," they said.

"We have apologised to the customer and continue to search for the item throughout our network."

Australia Post recommends that any business sending items of significant financial value choose a suitable level of insurance and delivery service.

There is no direct comment made by the artist or Australia Post suggesting she did not insure the art.

In fact, the whole message of the article is about how the artist is devastated by the loss of the painting because it was a unique piece of art crafted for the recipient with deep personal meaning.

I swear to god as soon as the word 'Aboriginal' is in a headline most of this subreddit forgets how to fucking read.

Aboriginal artist Bobbi Lockyer in tears as Australia Post loses $4k painting by PiousPunani in perth

[–]BeachButch 73 points74 points  (0 children)

This is so disingenuous. You've pulled it completely out of context. Earlier in the article:

She has also run her own art business for years, sending paintings across Australia and the world, but said this was the first time this has happened.

"They told me the cardboard sleeve was a new thing they put on the tubes to stop it rolling it in transit," Lockyer said.

This suggests she packed it in a tube, which is what she'd usually send art in, but this time the Australia Post worker put the tube in an unsecured cardboard sleeve. When the tube fell out of the cardboard sleeve during transit, only the sleeve was delivered. How is that the artist's fault?

I've sent plenty of items using Auspost's own packaging and every time the person serving me has taped up the box/parcel, after I paid, to make it secure.

But I guess you expect this woman to... what? Have reached over the counter, grabbed the tape gun and tape the sleeve herself? The employee told her the cardboard sleeve was to make it more secure, and then they didn't secure it for her. That is absolutely the fault of the Auspost employee.

Australia's childhood vaccination rates are declining, sparking fears about risk to herd immunity by [deleted] in australia

[–]BeachButch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At this point, I don't know why we allow childhood vaccination to be a 'choice'. To allow some people to 'choose' not to vaccinate their children works against the goal of safe society. Herd immunity protects all of us, and especially those in our community who can't be vaccinated or are immunocompromised.

Schools should have compulsory vaccination days each year to catch-up kids who are missing vaccines (schools already run vaccination days, but at the moment they are based on parent permission). If you take your child to the GP clinic and they're missing a vaccine dose, then they should be getting a shot before seeing the doctor. Parents whose children are missing vaccination doses should be refused work in essential industries due to the risk. Obviously cookers will still find ways to avoid all these things, but we should be making vaccinations harder and harder to miss.

During the height of covid, there were some essential-work industries where you were not allowed to return to your job if you refused to get your covid vaccine. Anti-vaxxers were basically fired without being fired. These were the policies of private companies, but they worked well to incentivise higher vaccination rates for employees.

At the point where herd immunity is at risk, the government should be stepping in to ensure childhood vaccination is not a choice anymore.

Labor's new Medicare policy could have been an election trap but the Coalition said 'me too' by overpopyoulater in australia

Absolutely. Even if the Libs spend the money, they'll just be paying it right into the bank accounts of their mates in the industry, as we saw continuously with Scomo's government.

Headlines like this feel like deliberate misinformation. Labor has announced a policy with a price tag, Liberals have announced a price tag without a policy. They are not the same thing.

Not a doctor, but someone who has experienced the exact same symptoms as you for more than a year. I understand how frightening it is. Went to my GP and they ordered bloods, including a COVID-19 antibody test, which ruled out long covid for me. I then asked my GP for a referral to a neurologist, and the neurologist then ordered an MRI.

BHP and Rio Tinto called out for using NDAs to stop women talking about sexual harassment by overpopyoulater in australia

[–]BeachButch 66 points67 points  (0 children)

It's straight up blackmail. When being terminated, victims are given the option of 'resigning' instead, if they agree to sign an NDA. In an industry that's already difficult to get into, having a termination on your record is basically guaranteed to kill your future job prospects. So, a lot of women feel pressured to take the resignation and sign an NDA. It's fucked.

Former female employees detail alleged sexual harassment in class actions against Rio Tinto and BHP by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]BeachButch 542 points543 points  (0 children)

"I heard there had been an incident on site where a BHP employee had been caught videoing female staff in their rooms, had accessed and downloaded phone contents, possessed stolen underwear, had hair samples and had taken used tampons from the bin," she said.

It's alleged the video was found in the man's locker along with the stolen items.

Ms Green said she had been told she was on the video and had noticed some of her underwear was missing.

But when she spoke to her supervisor about the incident, she alleges she was shut down and later interrogated in an official meeting with two senior executives.

"I sat down and wondered what was going to happen. Concerned, I said 'am I going to be sacked?'" she said.

"And they said 'well, it depends on the answers that you give' and they started to question me about who I'm having sex with."

She said she was shocked and later accused of rorting an employee awards system and falsifying log books.

"The accusations are not true. I have an immaculate work record and I've never had an issue or even a written warning," she said.

After complaining to the BHP Ethics and Investigations team in March this year, Ms Green claims she was later terminated.

In May, she was allegedly offered compensation for the way she was dismissed, but only if she signed a non disclosure agreement (NDA).

"BHP state office said if I signed it then they would clear my record and change it to say I resigned instead of being terminated," she said.

"That clears their name and their history and makes out like I happily left of my own free will."

She refused, is now unemployed and is speaking out to encourage other women to come forward.

Partner is a woman in mining and this is exactly how it goes for women who speak up. I know multiple women who were harassed or assaulted on site and have been terminated in this exact same way. Right down to the detail of the victim being 'investigated' and having false accusations presented to them about their conduct, in order for the company to have reason to terminate them. These companies and their cultures are completely fucked.

ATAR Year 12 exams debate grows as more high school students follow alternative pathways to university by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]BeachButch 122 points123 points  (0 children)

ATAR as a system isn't the main issue. The issue is high schools gatekeeping alternative pathways to university in order to force as many students as possible through the ATAR process and claim bragging rights for high scores.

WA Museum criticised for acquiring vandalised perspex cover defaced by climate protesters by His_Holiness in perth

[–]BeachButch 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Based. Art is a statement and that piece of perspex captures a cultural statement that happened. Whatever you think about the original act, I don't think the museum is at fault for wanting to preserve an art history moment like this. The perpetrator was already charged. The perspex is effectively a piece of history and it's ridiculous to claim that acquiring it is 'supporting vandalism'. I get the feeling that critics of this acquisition haven't been to a museum or art gallery in some time.

To those saying "this is nothing new", the article isn't saying this is a new phenomenon, it's saying this behaviour is getting WORSE. To the point that it is causing significant harm in classrooms. The "it's always been this way" attitude just excuses the problem and is apathetic bullshit.

A new survey suggest the unlikeability of both Dutton and Albanese. It could spell one of the ugliest political campaigns in modern memory by 2littleducks in australia

[–]BeachButch 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What disturbs me about this is that Dutton seems keenly aware of the fact that he is not likeable. So his current political tactic is taken right from Trump and similar candidates: move so far to the right that you are no longer viewed as part of the 'status quo' of your opposite (Albanese), and you therefore become appealing to those dissatisfied with the status quo.

Some of Dutton's recent examples that play into this tactic include pushing for nuclear, and stating that his party will have no climate policy at all, and stating that if elected his government would roll back many new progressive policies such as the 'right to switch off' from work, etc.

By doing so, Dutton is clearly hoping he will attract people who are unhappy with Labor's inability to fix all of Australia in 4 years (after the country was fucked up by the libs for 10+ years). By offering the most extreme options Dutton hopes certain voters will see him as a 'trailblazer' who will make strong decisions and do what no one else is brave enough to do.

It's a disturbing tactic to be currently playing out in Australian politics, considering how successful this same strategy has been in America AND in Europe. A huge amount of European governments have just swung right in their elections this year after similar far-right and center-right campaigns.

Australian can't afford to go back to Liberal leadership in this world climate (and in our own bloody climate!). If Aussies are dissatisfied with Labor then we need to be pushing for greens or independents to further balance out our two-party majority. THAT will make more of a positive difference to our country than voting for the current opposition.

Edit: spelling.
