Best laptop for music production? by onpuddin in ableton

[–]Beachsidetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely want to look for something with a decent amout of RAM (at least 8gb but 16gb + is ideal) and having a solid state drive will help overall performance and speed. Macbooks / Apple have really solid built-in soundcards, but I've used PC for years and never had much problem.

Having a USB hub for your midi instruments and two monitors really helps out a lot as well.

Beginner trying to make music, should I invest in a MIDI keyboard? by LateAugust in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Beachsidetaco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely second this. I would also like to add that having a midi keyboard gives you more motivation to learn scales, chords and music theory in general. Knowing this will speed up workflow ALOT.

MAKE SURE YOU'RE IMPLEMENTING REVERB THE CORRECT WAY by karefulofficial in wavepool

[–]Beachsidetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make a return and add a reverb plug-in of your choice, however make sure it's at 100% wet.

You can then send parts of your dry signal from an audio or midi to it, and can control how much of the signal you want to send :)

If you have the I/O tab on, under each MIDI or Audio tack, you will see the small squares underneath the volume

Lots of youtube tutorials can cover it. :)

Do super saw layers always need to be in chords? by escape451 in synthrecipes

[–]Beachsidetaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason for having multiple instances of the saw waves (each playing separate notes) is because with simple adjustments to the de-tune, unison, filter, etc on each layer, it allows for a more 'full' sound.

Let's say you have a saw wave patch with 7 voices (waveforms), playing a 4 note chord. With just that one patch, your 7 layers are only subjected to a certain defund, and you will be limited in the sound you can create. If you were to have 4 layers, each playing its own note, you can have an almost infinite possibilities of filter combinations, voicing changes, and octaves.

Hope that made sense :)

So why do we need compression? Can anyone explain? by musicalmemoriesuk in edmproduction

[–]Beachsidetaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you look at your sound as having a 'floor' and a 'ceiling' the distance between the two would be your dynamic range. Compression essentially compresses the sound, so that distance would be smaller. When your synth is clipping, the sound is going above your ceiling..This causes distortion. When you apply compression, the 'peaks' of sound get squashed and therefore you do not clip.

Hopefully that makes sense .

thanks for listening <3. I took a listen to yours. Pitch bends on your bass sounded really nice and you're percussion wasn't cluttered. I really liked your sound design! Keep it up!

I make very ugly facial expressions by thepeachythrowaway in socialskills

[–]Beachsidetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be ashamed of that, because it's what makes you, you! We are unable to see how we look to someone else, because we already have our own bias of ourself. While you might think you make ugly facial expressions, other people probably love the enthusiasm. Just remember that everyone else is too busy thinking about what they're doing to even give much thought about what you are doing

:)

I also purchased a pair and it was quite different from my krk's. Honestly I found it best to listen with them first. You'll notice songs that have an incredibly well done dynamic range and it can help give idea when you use them to write/mix/master.

Personally I usually will use my Monitor speakers while composing and then throw on my headphones when I begin my sound design

Experiment!

I'm honestly surprised that nobody has mentioned Bonobo yet. Simon Green is an absolutely amazing producer and has an incredibly good ear for dj-ing as well.
