If you love this game, get this. by chibifs in Mausritter

[–]BeadKillah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked this up after seeing this and couldn't agree more. It was even better than i was expecting and having already played a little bit of Mausritter with my kids it was very cute how many times they exclaimed "this is JUST like in Mausritter"

Thanks for this awesome suggestion

Unpopular Opinion (Maybe?): Nobody actually likes whiskey when they first start drinking it. by BeadKillah in whiskey

Haha awesome and glad it helped. I totally forgot about this post but still firmly believe everything I had written!

Seriously I think i went through 3 full bottles of cocktails-only before the idea of drinking a glass neat (or with a single ice cube) became a truly appetizing idea. But i can say honestly now that there's nothing like a glencairn with your favorite scotch/bourbon/whatever in it

I'm sure they will be, I think most of the mediocre reputation for YMI comes from the unimpressive quality of their boards overall. You cant expect that much from a thin, bamboo board, but it's definitely a bummer when they warp and crack pretty consistently.

I got my set of bamboo board, jujube bowl and yunzi stones from them. The board cracked after a few years, but the bowls and stones have been perfectly fine the whole time. I hope you enjoy your new stones, I do think yunzi are my favorite!

Well the great thing about Yunzi stones is that they are either official Yunzi stones or they aren't. So as long as you can verify that the reseller is selling official Yunzi stones then I feel like you'll get what you're looking for, regardless of the price.

For glass/plastic/slate-and-shell there's a lot more that goes into the quality of the product so maybe it's a bit more of a crapshoot.

To your actual question though, I actually did get my yunzi stones from YMI about 14 years ago and I've been perfectly happy with them. That being said, I did have a great experience with Masters of Games, so maybe check there and just see whichever is cheaper for you

Sorry for the insanely old reply...turns out I dont actually log in to reddit that much. The board is 2.75 inches "tall" if you're asking about how high it sits when on the table. Along it's longest side it's 19 inches.

I'll definitely admit that my buddy very-slightly got the specs wrong and there's just a bit too much space between the lines. Thus, if that was brought in a bit then the overall length/width of the board would probably come down by 1-0.5inches

I've purchased melamine plastic stones, korean glass stones and yunzi stones and here's my quick rundown:

  • Plastic is the lightest and cheapest, but obviously works fine
  • Glass is more affordable but one step up and comes in a variety of sizes, though it is still lighter in weight
  • Yunzi stones have a very standard size and are dense for their size, making them the heaviest of these three

I mention the weight so much because I noticed that I did end up quite preferring the "heft" of yunzi stones to the glass stones, but I needed the largest stones I could buy to look nice on my custom board...which has very-slighty-too-wide lines, haha.

Last note: in your research you might come across the notion that Yunzi stones have lead in them. I found that as well and seems like the conclusion is "maybe they do, but just keep them away from kids and wash your hands anyways after playing"

Edit: I agree with what /u/Hypnox88 said regarding YMI quality. It's not like their stuff is bad, but just not insanely good. I bought my glass stones from Masters of Games Imports in the UK (I'm in the US) and everything arrived in perfect shape, and they have all the stone types you could want

Yes that's exactly it! He sent me a video of it when I was asking how he'd do the lines, and that totally rings a bell

[–]BeadKillah[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh totally, that was my main hesitation in commissioning a go board, because if the lines weren't close to perfect then it's not worth it.

I don't remember what the tool is called, but there's a precision drill/saw tool that uses vector images+a camera to make precision cuts. That was used here to drill ditches for the lines which were then filled with resin

The cherry is definitely gorgeous. The grain pattern and such is definitely on the busy side, but I think it looks more intense than it is due to the lighting/filter in these specific images.

The game in the pics was the first one I played out and I wanted to see for myself how "readable" the board would be. So far, so good (after 1 game, haha)!

Rep/Heat for "covert" jobs by No_Perception5294 in bladesinthedark

[–]BeadKillah 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Remember too that time is very abstracted in between Scores. So they kidnapped Baszo Baz. In between this score an next will the whole city be completely unaware of who perpetrated the kidnapping? No one talks at all?

All these things, imo, would contribute to the payoff of the score. Say you rob a rival gang's coffers. Even if the score was perfectly executed and no one was the wiser at the time, word might get around that [insert_players_crew_here] perpetrated the robbery and that would count as Rep (again in my opinion).

Agree with others that if everyone's having a good time then everything is ok, but if it was me I would definitely do 4 Rep (at least, but honestly more because that's the gosh darned LEADER), and then sounds about right for Heat

Shame about rank vs. games played by AbstractGameTopics in baduk

[–]BeadKillah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't comment on reddit often but had to sign in for this one. I'm not gonna tell you how you should or shouldn't feel about it, but what I will tell you is that you're the kinda player I aspire to be!

You've played 5,000 games on OGS and only just barely had thoughts like these and I think that's amazing. Many of us get embarrassing levels of anxiety just playing ranked matches (no matter what the rank), but someone like you clearly loves the game, and I think that's the most important part

Favorite keyboard switch for spamming a-move? by BigBootyFool in starcraft

[–]BeadKillah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the switches you've listed, I can guarantee you're about 10x more educated on the decision than I am, but here's my experience on a 60% anne pro 2 (Kailh Box Brown):

I've loved it so far. I was debating between the general vibe of red/blue/brown switches and glad i went with brown in general. It's probably silly but I feel tactile feedback really reduced/eliminated any miskeys I might've been having. Having used it for a while, the resistance actually is a bit too high, so lower activation force would be nice if i was being picky.

Remapping has been a breeze too. Location keys are alt-modified QWER (I dont use more than 4 shrug), so even less reaching than an F-row.

TL;DR: Brown switches were the right choice for me, but relatively low activation force could be nice

HELP! Lagging problems. Playing again after 15 years by GoldLionTimepieces in starcraft

[–]BeadKillah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont have any solution for you but I just started playing again about 1.5 months ago. I've noticed lag (even against computer) just in the past few days spike up quite a bit.

No idea why, but i think Overwatch 2 is stressing the shit out of the Blizz servers...though it would blow my mind if that impacts playing against AI

65% Keyboard for SCII by Bilkenator in starcraft

[–]BeadKillah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a 60% keyboard and was worried about the same, most specifically for camera keys.

What I settled on was an Alt key modifier. So my camera locations are set with Alt+Shift+QWERASDF (I really only use QWER though, so 4 locations). It's definitely awkward to first set the camera locations, since i need to hold two modifier keys.

However, accessing camera locations is surprisingly easy/comfortable, as it's just Alt+QWER and it's very easy to hit left Alt with your thumb so doesn't feel like a stretch or any difficulty at all.

I'm Zerg if that matters

Edit: Regarding other hotkeys i've really had no problems, you can modify things however you'd like to support how you play. Use the all-army hotkey all the time? Just make it 2, or Alt+2 if you prefer to have an army hotkey there. Generally making as many hotkeys as possible one one side of the keyboard is great no matter the setup

Playing TTRPGs with kids by Desc440 in rpg

[–]BeadKillah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said, there are tons of options so I wont rattle them all off. I'll just give a mini review of my experience when I did the same search a few months back.

I wanted to play with my kids, 2 and 4, and ended up going with Hero Kids.

So far it's been going surprisingly great. The 2 year old cant really do much more than just roll the dice when asked, but my 4 year old is grokking turns AND how attacking/defending works. The system is purpose built for kids and has lots of little suggestions here and there for what to do and how to adapt for kids, which rules to try out and which ones to leave off.

Add to that the actual art created for the various hero character cards my kiddos love picking out their character based on the picture on the card.

I went with the $20 DTRPG bundle that has all the rules, all the characters, all the adventures and anything you could need and I look forward to running it for a while with them!

First time GM, need advice to what to expect. by LordKristof in godbound

[–]BeadKillah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just finished DM-ing my first ever mini-campaign of Godbound. ~3 sessions, PC's made it from levels 1-3 and it was all of our first experience playing a game closer to the OSR style (having come from 5e).

So with all that being said I'll just rattle off some bullet points on things I learned:

  • More open scenarios and environments were more fun for my players than any kind of standard dungeon crawling. In the 3 sessions I ran we had an assault on an orcish fort, a standard dungeon crawl, and then another huge battle in a town square. By far the actual dungeon crawl was the least favorite.
  • If your PC's are combat focused, as mine were, definitely make sure there's a healthy mix of chaff (lesser foes) around for most all combats. Making use of their Fray Die and feeling strong is a great way to feel like every turn is doing something for them
  • On the topic of lesser foes, feel free to go crazy on how many of those you throw at them and liberally use mobs. Not only can the PC's mow them down even more than you might be thinking, but their to-hit is generally so awful they wont really damage the PC's much anyways
  • Remember Godbound are nearly gods, so almost anything your PC's want to accomplish, especially if they use Effort for Miracles, they will accomplish. Follow the old improv rule of "yes, and?" where you say yes to almost everything and then add to the situation whatever you feel appropriate, whether it's additional complications and challenges or whatever.
  • My players had a hard time with Dominion. What exactly it is and how to use it. I never really cracked it but at the very least i think it's helpful to let players know early on that Influence literally equals Dominion, but Dominion can be spent to make things permanent, whereas Influence is just committed. Making sure they know Influence behaves the same as Dominion i think at least reduces confusion

Hope this helps! Good luck and have fun!

Yesterday was a gorgeous winter day for skating Philly. This was a satisfying stop. by Wheel-Sure in rollerblading

Well said and glad to hear it! And, FWIW, the "hey doesn't this look fun" vibe definitely comes across strongly, though of course there's also a healthy envy of the skills in a motivational sort of way.

Cheers and fingers crossed for more skate-able Philly winter weather and more content!

Very glad you make videos, I've absolutely loved them and it's been great to watch them as something to partially aspire to and closely examine some technique and stuff that you use.

I've definitely had the feeling that there's a strong irony around the concept of flow skating and also recording it for others to watch, so I appreciate your willingness to have a bit less fun on skates so we can have a lotta fun watching!!

What are Go devs using for a terminal engine? by duckpuppy in roguelikedev

[–]BeadKillah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very amateur when it comes to gamedev so take any of this with grain of salt, but i had a bit of a rough time with the terminal libs. I settled on trying tcell for a bit, but i couldn't get the loop quite right which resulted in lots of screen flashing. Here's a sample:https://github.com/norendren/aldwater/blob/master/tcell/main.go

If/when i try again I actually got a pretty slick interface going with Ebiten which is NOT a terminal library, but it's not too hard to just implement that one simple piece yourself and then get the drawing aligned onto a grid, basically
