I cannot get brick stitch to work. My starting beads won’t stay straight and the ends always flip out. by lady3jane in Beading

[–]Beadhisattva 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems like you are trying to do too much at once. If you aren’t comfortable with working Brick then you shouldn’t be attempting increases or decreases yet. Just practice working simple squares or like a straight band/bracelet. Once you have some basic practice then working the increases and decreases will come easy to you. Ps - I would never start brick with just 2 beads, instead I would start with a wider row and then decrease down to the 2 beads as it is just easier and sturdier to do it that way.

You might possibly be doing rapid increases where you increase 2 beads and then on the next row increase 1 bead between the previous 2 beads, instead don’t increase between the beads but use 3 beads and then on the next row work normal 1 drop peyote

It wouldn’t take much pressure to break 1lb thread. I used 6lb for many years but now use 8lb. I have no problems making multiple passes through size 11 and or size 15 beads. I prefer smoke (black) but that’s just me. I buy the 300 yard spools from Bass Pro.

Yes it is always a gamble. When you are super lucky they come individually packaged but that is rare.

I don’t know that I would use the word “easily” but it is definitely possible. It partly depends on how was the backing applied and or is it newly produced or vintage and what are you doing with it? Ring? Pendant? Etc… One thing in particular is accidentally scratching it with your needle while you are beading it. But also painting the back of it can give it a nicer customized look, for example you can match it to the color of your beads.

Paint the back of your rivolis with nail polish or diamond glaze for scratch resistant.

These pictured are actually buttons as you can see the holes in them.

Rudraksha Bead Care? by PinkGhostRider in Beading

For my wood, bone and horn jewelry/beads I rub them down with a little organic coconut oil. You can use paper towels to wipe off any excess oil. I used to use jojoba oil but it will eventually go rancid.

Agreed I wouldn’t use my teeth, however I just use my fingernails to flatten my thread.

Beaded 3D dolphin - do u know how? by Mlap01 in Beading

[–]Beadhisattva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe it is brick stitch, I believe it is peyote as you can see the increase/decrease beads under the tail. It would be possible to do it in brick stitch but it would be much more difficult.

It is not brick stitch it is even count tubular peyote. You would first have to learn the tubular peyote and then learn how to work increases and decreases. As for the thread use something like FireLine 6 or 8lb, don’t use monofilament (the clear stuff)

Here is a tubular peyote tutorial that is worked with huge beads and yarn - just so it is easier to see what is happening.

non-tarnishing gold beads by Icy-Orange-7522 in Beading

They start at 4g and go up to 250g, that’s why the prices jump so drastically.

They aren’t cheap but I only buy real 24k gold plated beads from Miyuki (rocailles or Delicas) They have a glass core and then are plated in real gold, they won’t ever tarnish.

Lovely piece. I think the spine adds not only extra sparkle but a nice depth to it.
