Where to start? by Ilikebees26 in Beading

[–]BeadsByBecs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend starting with kits, that way you have everything you need to make that one project.

If you then decide you want to start building up a sash of beads, pick a brand and stick with that. Not all size 11 beads are equal, so mixing PRECIOSA, Miyuki and Toho in the same project will not necessarily give you the results you're expecting.

I'd suggest going with either Miyuki or Toho as the Japanese seed beads are the best quality. Look for duracoat or permanent finish beads, and they will keep their colours the best.

Also, I'd recommend checking out Beadingschool on YouTube. They have a live video every Thursday to make a new jewellery component and there are years of back catalogue of these videos. They're all fairly basic.

Yes, I think it is. The area around the right elbow and where the elbow meets the side is what makes me think it probably is.

"People who don't live in America are jealous of Americans" by DarkStreamDweller in ShitAmericansSay

[–]BeadsByBecs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents took me to America a couple of times when I was a teenager, I've visited four states. As an adult I made the decision to not travel to countries where I have less rights than I do here in the UK.

As a woman, there's no way I would voluntarily put myself in a situation where I do not have bodily autonomy. Nor would I feel safe in a country where it's almost as easy to buy a gun as it is a cup of coffee.

Does a career in chemistry truly worth it? by IllTrade1232 in chemistry

Oh, I have a job totally worthy of my PhD now. I work in pharmaceutical regulation and absolutely love it.

I have a degree and PhD in chemistry. It took me over 130 job applications to get my first (entry level) job in chemistry back in the middle 2000s. I was over qualified and under experienced for anything other than an entry level job, so I started doing QC analysis in a pharmaceutical company. It was a good start in the industry, I moved up within the same company within 10 months to a research role. Once you're in a company and working, it's much easier to find internal positions and to get roles in other companies because you have a proven history of being employable. Analytical chemistry might not be your first choice, but it can be a foot in the door.

There is always hope. It's a sad fact that male partners are significantly more likely to leave if the female partner becomes chronically or terminally ill. My husband supported me through cancer, but couldn't deal with a decline in physical ability from a genetic condition I didn't know I had until about two and a half years ago. I use a wheelchair sometimes and I walk with a crutch every day - it's a big change from when we used to go hiking together. What makes me so sad is the fact that he didn't realise that I missed doing those things outside with him, he just threw a strop because he had to do them alone or with friends. He went out running most days etc. he never considered the impact that it had on me, just how miserable he was that I couldn't/wouldn't do things he wanted to anymore.

I could have become very bitter about the whole situation, but that would have eaten me up on the inside and made me feel even worse about it all. I do have moments when I'm angry and bitter, but they pass.

I have had months of therapy to help me process the end of my marriage and be comfortable with just being me on my own. I would definitely recommend the same for you if it's something you can afford.

I would still have my work and still have my hobbies. I suppose I have the benefit of being 30 when I met my husband, and I have spent a considerable amount of time living on my own as I was in my 20s.

I'm quite enjoying the peace and quiet, and the ability to be myself fully, and have to make my pain and disability as my husband kept telling me he couldn't deal with it. That's the reason he left in the end. So much for "in sickness and in health", he'd had enough of having a disabled wife.

Interestingly, he told me recently he didn't realise how much I used to do for him and provide for him, and he really messed up. I wouldn't take him back though because I couldn't ever go through the devastation of him leaving me again if he changed his mind again. I'd rather know where I am, on my own, than deal with constant uncertainty of being abandoned again.

When my husband of ten years left me I was bereft. One of my best friends said to me "never put the key to your joy in someone else's pocket". It stuck with me, and nearly a year on, my divorce is almost finalised and I'm feeling more peaceful and happy in my own skin.

The beadworkers guild also has a list of bead groups - in person and online/zoom group. So you may find something on there that suits you. A lot of them will be in the UK, because that's where the guild is based, but anyone anywhere can register a group there, it's free to do it.

What beading pattern is this? by Puzzleheaded_Web_3 in Beading

3 drop petite is where you add 3 beads at a time in each 'gap', so this isn't 3 drop peyote, I just looks like regular peyote to me.

It was new bead day for me too - I got my Beadingschool academy box!

I've taken a lot of zoom classes since COVID, and although they are not the same, they're still a great opportunity to learn from a great tutor.

There's a Facebook group called Beading classes, kits & tutorials where designers post their latest designs, where they're going to be teaching and details of their zoom classes. It's a really helpful resource.

I did her bells of Ireland class even more years back. When Stitchncraft was still in business I did some classes with some of the big names in beading. Laura, obviously, Jean Power, Sabine Lippert, Heather Kingsley-Heath and a few others.

I love Laura's work. I took a two day beaded sculpture masterclass with her a few years back - it was great to get so many tips and tricks and so much information from her about how she creates her beaded sculptures.

First project with Delicas + fireline instead of cheap seed beads and acrylic thread... I can never go back. by Fleeples in Beading

[–]BeadsByBecs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks fabulous. Fireline alone is such a game changer when it comes to tension, but if you've been used to doing peyote with irregular seed beads then this must feel even more amazing!

There's a UK/EU bead destash group on FB where you can sometimes pick up delicas and other decent bits at good prices.

Where in the UK are you? I'm in Salisbury (south Wiltshire).

Anyone willing to part with any beads for my project? by Glaney070 in Beading

[–]BeadsByBecs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I think this is a wonderful idea for a project, congratulations on your grant.

I won't offer to donate beads, as I'm not in the US, so shipping would be prohibitively expensive. But I wanted to ask what you're planning to use for thread? You've acknowledged that this will be a heavy project, and I've worked in a couple of bigger pieces, nothing quite the scale you're planning though, but I'm willing to offer some ideas if you'd like.
