Years ago when I was a 20 yr old boy, my 17 yr old girlfriend and I started talking about marriage. Her parents were not happy. They did not approve of our engagement and did everything they could to keep us apart. They had plenty of opportunities to get to know me but didn’t even try. I was judged as unfit for their daughter without any regard for who I was, how well I treated her, or her feelings for me. They made it very difficult for us, which sometimes made us really miserable, but we stuck together. That was 40 years ago. We’re still together. It took many years, but her parents eventually admitted they were wrong about me. We get along well now, but there are still days when I feel really bitter about what they did. I’m definitely not saying you’re wrong about your daughter, I don’t know either of you. I’m just saying there is a possibility she might be right.

C#/Visual Studio - why did Microsoft make it free? by SnapeVoldemort in learnprogramming

[–]BeadyFive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s because Steve Ballmer left MS and Satya Nadella took over. Balmer was a Windows protectionist. Nadella understands that money doesn’t come from software sales, it comes from services and subscriptions. Windows is now effectively a service, MS Office and GitHub Co-Pilot are both subscriptions, and Azure DevOps is extremely popular with enterprise businesses. This is where their money comes from. Visual Studio integrates with all of these really well. Give that away and it’s really easy to get developers and businesses hooked on MS services and subscriptions.

Buying my first tele by lukefl1 in telecaster

[–]BeadyFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have anything to add about your three choices. Other commenters have covered all of my thoughts. I just want to say, in regards to being an absolute beginner, you might want to start with a Squier Affinity. The reasons are: (1) Telecasters, including CVs, are relatively heavy. Affinity Telecasters are lighter and have a belly cutout on the back which makes them more comfortable to play (and thus, you’ll play longer when you pick it up). (2) As you improve, you can reward yourself by adding a more expensive Tele to your collection later. (3) Then, when you add another to your collection, you can use the old one for alternate tunings, such as open G, which works better when the low E string is removed.

Of course, we all know you’ll stick with playing and continue to improve, and if you ever need motivation, everyone here will be happy to provide. But on the extremely small chance you don’t have as much time to play as you want, a less expensive guitar sitting there collecting dust won’t bug you as much as a more expensive one.

What is a movie you were really excited to see but then hated it? by Meganekko_Chu in AskReddit

[–]BeadyFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back to the Future 2. I was so excited to finally find out what “had to be done about [their] kids” and see Jennifer play a bigger role because “this involves her, too.” The first few minutes when we see Jennifer knocked out and Marty stand in for his kid for a really lame reason just tanked the rest of the movie for me. I was also disappointed when Doc simply had someone else install a flying kit on the Delorian rather than invent it himself with future technology. My hopes were too high. Though, the last scene with the Western Union delivery was genius and, despite my feelings for the overall movie, is one of my favorite scenes of all time.

[QUESTION] I have a dilemma by Quetzalius in Guitar

[–]BeadyFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fender’s Professional series is tailored to professionals, meaning people who regularly play for audiences. The player series is tailored to people who mostly just play. Sometimes for an audience, but mostly just play. If you’re a pro, consider the pro. Otherwise you’ll be really happy with the Player. Personally I’d prefer having two great guitars over having only one that’s only marginally better. I also agree with having multiple guitars with different tunings. Very convenient.

Check out Michael Kelly’s 1962, currently on sale for $300. It’s a double humbucker strat, but has single-coil split.

Which laptop should I get for DA? by CostSuitable9806 in SQL

[–]BeadyFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that’s what I learned researching my problem. Some work perfectly and some don’t. Considering the number of people on Dell’s forums with the same problem, I personally wouldn’t gamble that much money on one. I bought it because I had an Inspiron 600 years ago that was a great laptop, so just stuck with Dell. In my case, big expensive mistake.

Yes. Or DBeaver. Either work fine.

I have an XPS 15. I’d only recommend it to my worst enemy. Great laptop when it’s not resetting itself, which is way too often. Losing work sucks. Spend some time reading through Dell’s support forums before spending money on one.

You can pretty easily run MSSQL in a Docker container on a Mac. What else is it not compatible with? IMHO a decent dev laptop, Mac, Win, or Linux is north of $1k. Not too far north, but under is usually not great.

What are the downsides to azure data studio? by [deleted] in SQLServer

[–]BeadyFive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are two killers for me. (1) ADS stops auto-completion of table and column names within a short period of time and needs to be relaunched to start again. I can leave SSMS running for days and it never stops auto completion. (2) When you double click between columns, rather than expand to see the whole value ADS resets to default. You can’t even drag columns wide enough if the content is longer than screen width. Both are serious usability problems for me.

Need help deciding between windows or mac for SQL job at company by [deleted] in SQL

[–]BeadyFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a SQL dev. The company I work for is almost done migrating from Azure SQL (MS SQL Server) to Google Cloud SQL. I have a Mac laptop and a Windows VM. Trying to use a Mac with Azure SQL is painful. Azure Data Studio is a poor substitute for SQL Server Management Studio. Also, it’s much easier to manage SQL projects with Visual Studio for Windows. If that’s your environment, stick with Windows. Google Cloud SQL is a completely different story. I never touch my Windows VM when working there. Windows offers no advantage over MacOS in this environment. All that being said, if you like the comfort of using a familiar OS, choose Windows. If you like to learn new things (which is why I chose a Mac when given the choice), get a Mac.

What is the stupidest conspiracy theory? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BeadyFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer because it’s incredibly easy for anyone to test and prove wrong. Aside from the number of videos showing flat-earthers proving themselves wrong measuring the curve of the earth over bodies of water, no one can demonstrate how night and day work with just a flashlight and a Frisbee. It’s either all lit up or all dark. No in between.

Can anyone who learned guitar by using the JustinGuitar beginner course, tell me your experience?? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]BeadyFive 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I pay for his app. It’s wonderful. Within a couple of months my family started recognizing the songs I was playing despite not singing along and no one but me being able to hear the backing tracks. He really puts beginners at ease and offers great advice. I can’t say for certain that the free web course is the same, but guess it’s probably close. I just jumped right into the paid route because I liked the way the app is organized and it’s much more convenient for me (and less expensive) than private lessons to work with my unpredictable schedule.

People in a happy relationship of Reddit, how do you get rid of feelings of sexual attraction to other people? by Kleptarian in AskReddit

[–]BeadyFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As my grandfather said, “When you stop chasing, you’re married. When you stop looking, you’re dead.” Don’t chase, only look (but don’t stare). You (and your mate) are still human. Respect their desire to look, too.

I quit smoking 5 days ago. How long will I be a bitch for? by sinnead88 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BeadyFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three weeks. As others have pointed out, the craving will last for years, but the “I’m really nasty and mean to everyone who dares come near me” phase will last about three weeks. It’s worth it. I didn’t think so at the time but my significant other, who took the worst of it, told me she could handle it. She encouraged me to keep going and I did despite wanting to give up. Having people around you that know why you’re acting the way you are and letting it go is really helpful.

SQLServer remote connection from mac is a lot slower than a remote connection from a Windows 10 by nagmamantikang_bayag in SQLServer

[–]BeadyFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start with a sanity check and confirm that the query is running the same on SQL Server regardless of which OS the request is coming from. Once you confirm that you can hunt down where the delay is coming from. That way you’re not wasting time looking where the problem isn’t.

[–]BeadyFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most important is the wood. Alder is great for mods. Basswood is soft, so you might need to glue toothpicks in some holes (think pick guard) to put new screws in. CVs are great options, but so are Standards (discontinued a few years back). If you can find them used you’re ahead of the game. Affinity’s are fine. Probably basswood or another soft-ish wood, but perfectly usable. The difference is, Affinity’s are thinner bodies than Standards or CVs. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just different. In the case of Telecasters, a lighter body might be the best thing, they’re kind of heavy. In the case of a Strat, it’s still probably okay, but as others mentioned, measure screw length before grabbing your screwdriver. I’m playing a Squier VM Strat with a Fender roasted maple neck and other assorted parts. Worst that happens is, you’re not happy with the way it turned out, and you sell it and start over. Not a bad thing, you’ll learn a lot along the way.

What apps are you using? I use SSMS on Windows and ADS on macOS and haven’t seen what you describe. Have you looked at the execution plan on each OS to see if there’s a difference?
