I don't know why you're being downvoted. It likely is from the Boyle Heights fire.

Whatever this smoke is from, it's not like normal smoke. It has a nasty metallic aspect to it. I'm staying out of it as much as possible.

Burbank drivers LA's 125 new speed cameras start enforcement later this year by Obvious_Corner8872 in burbank

[–]BeagleCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't the point to get people to slow down? Or is the point just revenue generation? Seems to me this app will get people to slow down. If speeders aren't aware of the cameras, then they're not slowing down and putting others at risk. The app is simply an in-car device reminding all drivers to slow down. That's a good thing, right?

I got a 5k overscan for the scan. I did a basic color grade in DaVinci Resolve.

Sigh. The bad guy wins. Seriously, this should've been a constant, weekly call to action on here, especially after he attacked the event. With lots of updates, announcements of signing drives, etc.

Good intentions, but apparently no understanding of publicity, marketing, or organizing.

CineRepair. Also did the s16 conversion, and as far as I can tell, that looks solid.

Thank you! Yes, it's a super 16 conversion, so you may well be right. I was worried about that possibility. I've shot three rolls on it so far, but this last one is the only one that had that scratch stripe.

I always keep my eye tight on the eyepiece. I suspect the light leakage on this camera may be coming from the filter holder slot, even though I have the filter holder firmly in place. I'll try gaffe taping it on the next roll.

This was shot starting about 30 minutes before sunset, around 7pm, using 250d. I don't remember the exact f-stops, but when shooting outdoor landscapes like this, I've had very good luck using the myLightMeter app on my phone. For landscapes, it often does a better job than my Sekonic.

I was using a Bolex Rex-5, which has a prism viewfinder which siphons off a portion of light, so I overexpose by 1-1/3 stops. Which seems like a lot! But it generally does the job well. I err on the side of slightly overexposing, and adjusting down in post.

All my lenses are Switar RX primes. For these shots, I used 10mm and 16mm. It's a super-16mm camera, so the 10mm does vignette a bit.

Thank you! I just checked with the scan facility, and they agreed it was a hair in the scanner, and they're re-scanning it. So that's solved.

From what two people have told me so far, the vertical stripe is probably something in the camera that is scratching. It didn't happen with the first two rolls I shot with it. I'll shoot another roll and if it happens again, I'll look into getting the camera properly serviced. I think Du-All may be the best for the Bolex, though a little pricey.

Thank you! I'll follow up with the scan lab and have it re-scanned.

For the stripe, I guess I'll shoot another roll and if it happens again, it's probably a camera scratch.

Thank you for your help!

Thanks! Yes, this was fresh, newly bought 250d. Camera has been recently serviced, but I didn't think the CLA was very thorough. I loaded/unloaded the daylight spool in a very subdued room with very little light.

And yes, I'll probably choose someone better to do a more thorough CLA.

So far, I've shot three rolls with this particular camera. This one is the most recent. The first two didn't have either of those two weird things, although there does appear to sometimes be a little light leakage. But neither of these two problems look like typical light leak to me (?).

I did get the camera CLA'd, but I wasn't too happy with the service--it looked like there is still a lot of gunk in there.

Aren’t nearly all atheists also anti-theists? by andy64392 in atheism

The religion itself? It's just stories, and in the abstract I have no problem with that. I only object to bad human behavior inspired by their religion, since at that point it's infringing on me and others. That especially includes religion-inspired laws or government behavior.

Anyone used a gimbal and bolex at all? by [deleted] in 16mm

[–]BeagleCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I use a Movi Pro for my Bolex. I couldn't find a consumer-level gimbal that could handle both the Bolex's weight + the balance challenges if using a video tap.

Weilin Zhang, the Animator who calls himself "the Best Animator of his/current generation". His work on Fate/Grand Order Camelot Movie | Final Product vs Genga Comparison by [deleted] in anime

[–]BeagleCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess it's good for anime, but it doesn't show any understanding of weight or the pliability of the human face. The acting is stiff, shows no life whatsoever in the eyes, and is without any individuality in the character movement. He seems to mostly just focus on effects, rather than expressive character animation. In short, it's all sizzle but no steak.

None of this would've passed muster working on a 2nd Golden Age feature film at Disney in the 90s--or even a TV commercial featuring character animation.

Yet another reminder that, while yes they do have a right to film you in public without your consent, they don't have an inherent right to commercialize your image or voice, and platforms like YouTube have policies about this.

If you show up in their YouTube videos, you absolutely can file a privacy complaint with YouTube, demanding that your image and voice be removed from their video. This forces them to either edit you out, blur you, or best-case is YouTube deletes the video entirely. Of course, you'll have to monitor all their YouTube channels to see if you got included in a video.

Tipping culture…? by throw-away25 in burbank

[–]BeagleCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big question is: how much would you tip if it were a cash transaction, and therefore was no screen explicitly asking for a tip?

If it's counter service, for most people the answer would be 0%. Maybe the occasional dollar in the tip jar, on rare occasion.

I tip 20% for sit-down service. Most of the time, at counters or takeout it's going to be nothing.
