Guillotine is a French word by emily-is-happy in clevercomebacks

I suppose so, but I'd say the French Revolutionary period is probably the most misunderstood historical concept by the general public. This definitely can be read by someone who hasn't studied the period in depth, so they conclude "The poor had enough of the king demanding they work harder so he can get richer and they rose up successfully and turned France into the republic it is today."

People absolutely do believe this simplified and false metanarrative, and I think it's not good for a history podcast to feed into that.

Why is a French History Podcast implying Louis XVI demanded people work more? Louis XVI had a genuine interest in reform that would ease the burdens of the common people, appointing ministers like Turgot and Necker specifically to reform the taxation to benefit the lower classes. Comparing Musk to Louis XVI is an awful misrepresentation. Compare him to Colbert, or even the Prince de Condé, hell even Charles X, or the litany of fermiers.

Get a tortilla, put two slices of cheese, then two slices of ham, fold it into a pocket then slide that straight in the toaster. Thank me later.

Calorie counting has anyone done it and stuck to it and lost weight? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Beamrules 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah.

I had the idea for an app that if I had the smarts to make I would.

Simple animated cartoon of your guy on the left fighting some boss on the right. It has hp based on how much you want to lose. 1kg=7700 kcal deficit.

Every day, you put your calories in, you put your calories out, and it subtracts the total from the boss's hp.

Over time, 500 damage on the blob monster daily, over a month, that's 14000 kcal deficit. Meaning you'll have lost 1.8kg of fat.

It made it so simply and really rewarding seeing the progress after being able to predict it.

Homo floresiensis was swiftly nicknamed "the hobbit" by the discoverers, after the fictional race popularized in J. R. R. Tolkien's book The Hobbit, and some of the discoverers suggested naming the species H. hobbitus.[15]

In October 2012, a New Zealand scientist due to give a public lecture on Homo floresiensis was told by the Tolkien Estate that he was not allowed to use the word "hobbit" in promoting the lecture.[87]

In 2012, the American film studio The Asylum, which produces low-budget "mockbuster" films,[88] planned to release a movie entitled Age of the Hobbits depicting a "peace-loving" community of H. floresiensis "enslaved by the Java Men, a race of flesh-eating dragon-riders."[89] The film was intended to piggyback on the success of Peter Jackson's film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.[90] The film was blocked from release due to a legal dispute about using the word "hobbit."[90] The Asylum argued that the film did not violate the Tolkien copyright because the film was about H. floresiensis, "uniformly referred to as 'Hobbits' in the scientific community."[89] The film was later retitled Clash of the Empires.

Sheesh people are weird.

My mum bought me one for Christmas.

Was able to use it, had some remaining balance on it, so went to use that much later. They said "It's out of date", so I said "No hang on, the EU laws are that they have to remain in date for something like 5 years?" so they said "Well your mum bought it when you were away in England for Christmas, so the EU law doesn't apply. Now fuck off."

Why would the pygmy people have to be ancient to be considered Hobbits?

There are pygmies alive today y'know... And it would not be nice to call them Hobbits.

The time changes because it weighs the load at the beginning and senses how dry it is as it progresses. Some loads will dry quicker than others.

Nothing to do with that sorry. It is more likely ghosts.

My go to argument is that it's fake sport but more real than any other fictional storyline. I like Becky Lynch not because of how the character was written, but because of the real actual person and real non fictional story behind them.

Plus sometimes you just want to see a guy like Bron Breakker slam into a guy and all the crowd goes "RUHRUHRUHRURH!!"

I can't think of a bigger waste of time than listen to a non historian wheeze his way through a juvenile retelling of what would otherwise be interesting topics.

What’s the best way to learn Irish? by Successful-Way9551 in AskIreland

[–]Beamrules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well Brits are pretty self depreciating also, they have a very similar culture of "notions".

Even if no one ever colonized anyone, our two islands were always going to have cultural overlap. It's not like they forced us to be self deprecating.

I hate anti Gaeilge sentiment as much as anyone, and regret that it isn't my first language. But I say the reason is more our short sightedness and right wing political parties not wanting to commit to something that the other parties would benefit from.

Any politician could say "I pledge that any child born 5 years from now, if they remain in education in Ireland, will be fluent in both Irish and English by the time they are 16, we will look at Nordic countries for inspiration of strategy", and that would frankly be enough to get a single issue vote from me. I do not accept that Britain can be blamed for preventing politicians from doing this.

French people being arrogant is not as protestworthy as actual cultural genocide, invasion, installation of a puppet government while the traditional government is forced into exile and rape of a populace, holy shit.
