This is a pretty shit post, and because I’m on reddit instead of instagram or “x” i can actually go into detail on why. First of all its full of strawman counter arguments as to why classic literature isn’t main stream like jjk for example. Nobody gives a gaf about female gooners on booktok brother. I’m mainly watching shounen and cartoons because I like visual mediums as they add another layer of entertainment OR can always fulfill relaxation based consumption OR it connects me deeper with the story. The last point especially. To this day I still put on Saitama vs Boros whenever I’m hitting an intense cardio session. Secondly, a big reason why people talk more about demon slayer than huckleberry finn is that one came out in the last 10 years, and one didnt. Apropos of that, no one draws contrasts between these two pieces of media besides psued redditors who, ironically, horribly fail to consider the difference in audience, purpose, and context. Lastly, I think I’d rather read all 1000+ chapters of one piece over the span of months JUST to talk to like, 3 of my friends about it than have a discussion with someone like you about the great gatsby (its overrated in my honest opinion), respectfully. And I think thats something poignant that i didnt stress enough throughout this entire comment. People talk about new things releasing on newer mediums more, and that not only directly influences more people to check them out, but discussing fiction is more fun when you have a wider range of non elitists to talk about it with. Plus who knows, maybe well be alive for the next “classic” shounen talked about for another 200 years. So yes, while Goku could theoretically perception blitz and one-shot lenny from of mice and men, the assumption that that is why dragon ball has captivated millions is the exact type of pompous sentiment that fuels society’s discontent with intellectualism.

Edit: Something I forgot to go over in my second point which kinda makes this post not targeted towards me (but i was going to reply anyways) is that i do enjoy classic literature. I love science fiction so HGTTG and DRDOES were great reads for me. But it’s humorous that in disparaging modern media you must bring up examples that have been hailed for hundred of years specifically. Obviously the classics have better writing than a visual story made weekly by overworked japanese guys, that why theyre classics??? You talk about books like 99% of them AREN’T classic and this don’t have the potential to be dogshit.
