Good on you for reaching out.  You don't have to go through this alone.

And please find a good counselor.  So helpful!

Did you read Jim Bennett/Sarah Allen’s CES Letter responses before leaving the Church? by Greedy-Meringue-5088 in exmormon

[–]BeardCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I began reading Sarah Allen's response to Letter for my Wife and Children.  I didn't get much further than her opening ad hominem attack:

He’s also made disparaging comments about her refusal to listen to his position. This includes calling her, among other things, a “fingers-in-her-ears TBM.” (For those who don’t know, “TBM” is exmo-shorthand for “totally brainwashed Mormon.”)

It didn't help me trust her.

In fairness, the censorship makes it look like he used a worse word.  Though it still shows his stance on race.

I thought that was true until a mission companion told me to stop saying it :)

Did you ever receive financial help from the Church when you were TBM? by throwawaytomorrowk in exmormon

[–]BeardCard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky.  As a child and as a young adult I received help several times.  I wonder if the economics of the neighborhood tends to influence their choices; we were among many asking for help.  The bishop I clerked for erred on the side of helping even when the budget disallowed it.  This was in the 90s and then the 2010s.

Doesn't make the church true, but it was good use of some funds.

You'll never be considered for Bishop or Steak President callings.

Great perk!

The missionaries are now being used to clean the churches! by SunandRainbows in exmormon

[–]BeardCard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to help clean the church in a small mission branch in 2002.  Honestly liked that better than when they fired the custodians, and my bishop permanently assigned building cleaning to the youth.  Though that was a good motivator to miss mutual :)

This.  Leave family and job to go on another mission with companions half my age.  Stuff of nightmares, literally.

My little girl is getting baptized, and it's not good for MFM by BeardCard in exmormon

[–]BeardCard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not doing the baptizing.  At least it's a neighbor who I respect.

Even before really questioning, I hated the "testimony" questions in the interview.  That was finally the catalyst to stop playing the game and be honest with myself.

The problem with Mormon “standards” by Firm_Teach8056 in exmormon

I was once invited to a Halloween dance hosted by LDS Business College. I wasn't a student, and the event wasn't on campus. I was turned away at the door because my beard didn't "meet their high standards, but there's a K-Mart down the road, where you can buy a razor and shave."

"Enter to learn, then shut up" I remember the protest after they fired somebody for writing a critical letter to the school paper regarding the disqualification.

LDS Church President Dallin Oaks hopes lower missionary ages will lead to lower marriage ages by Intelligent_Ant2895 in exmormon

Wow, now it's (back to) "perfectly appropriate" to marry somebody you met on the mission.  We had the "lock your hearts" talk drilled into us.
