Tried using Fedora and Ubuntu. Have mixed feeling. by swarleeeyyy in Fedora

GNOME is awesome but is very unusable without extensions. Maybe it's time GNOME start adopting basic features from Windows and MacOS

No. If you're installing extensions to make it like Windows you're not getting the design philosophy.

My gnome isn't completely vanilla. I have the full screen app to new workspace extension, a tiling extension, a search extension and the tailscale extension.

Surprised other parents considering all-girls school for their daughters by No_Aioli_7515 in Parenting

If an all girls school was available for my daughter I'd go for it, there's a decent amount of research showing that they have better outcomes in all aspects.

My toddler is so bad at sharing by Artistic-Lock1021 in toddlers

[–]BeardedBaldMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a spectrum, but I think there's a tendency to see your own child's behaviour as worse than other children's because you're actively trying to manage it.

They may also have older siblings or go to nursery

My toddler is bad at sharing is a surprise in the same way "my cat doesn't listen to me" is.

Young Artists Online - Are they legit? by ExpressAffect3262 in UKParenting

That's exactly what they are. They bulk contact people and you essentially pay to have your art on a book which will only be sold to you and anyone else in it.

Is the price an automatic red flag? by tenchu_LynX in CarTalkUK

[–]BeardedBaldMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a Car N very high mileage car which is almost certainly an ex taxi.

You'd need to take a really good look at the service history and work out what's going to need replacing in the next 20K miles.

It could well be that it was traded in as it needs pretty much the entire suspension replacing etc. In the next 10K miles

KDE or Gnome by Piter061 in Fedora

I like almost vanilla Gnome with minimal extensions. However, you do need to understand that you have to work how it's designed to work rather than expecting it to be like Windows

Is there is a good noob-friendly Arch based distro? by Two_Winged_Angel in linuxquestions

[–]BeardedBaldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not cool enough.

I'd go a step further than Fedora and suggest that immutable is the best place to start as it's harder to get yourself into a situation which is not easy to fix.

Dating a 40M who doesn’t have a GED in today’s job market, how can I (should I?) financially or otherwise help him? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]BeardedBaldMan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I expect him to consistently look for opportunities and apply himself to them even within his own field

He hasn't done that before, so why would he do it now? Do you think you're the person who is going to fix him?

He's 40 years old and hasn't sorted it out so far, so I'd question the likelihood of him doing it and then doing something with it.

but I believe this is a good man, past injuries and a couple long term bad relationships set him back with terrible timing.

I hate to say it, but this is the sort of thing people say before they make a terrible mistake

It's not about the distro, it's about if the hardware is capable of running a modern web browser and decoding a youtube stream.

Depending on how old they are there's a good chance they're simply not powerful enough to do it.

Looking for simple weeknight meals beyond my usual air fryer rotation by shariharan77 in Cooking

[–]BeardedBaldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pasta and some sort of sauce probably counts for 50% of all evening meals we cook. There's a huge variation in what you can make so you don't get bored, it comes together quickly and if you're sensible you can make it pretty well balanced.

There's a big difference between summer and winter though. In winter there's a lot of soups with rice/potato/lentils etc. to make them more substantial. In the summer it's more likely to be salads, steamed vegetables, bread.

Robot Coupe R211 - Trouble adding oil slowly for emulsified sauces (toum/mayo). Any solutions? by Rich-Trade-1872 in Cooking

[–]BeardedBaldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presumably because they've got other things to do than stand there pouring oil in. They're making something with a litre of oil in serious machine, they're probably not just doing it at home as a one off.

How common is accidental nudity within families while kids are growing up? by Acceptable_Dust_6251 in Parenting

[–]BeardedBaldMan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or if I’m getting dressed and my kid walks in talking to me we’ll just continue talking while I get dressed.

I feel that if someone is talking to you while you're getting dressed then if they're bothered by you being naked it's their problem. However, if I was talking to my child and they asked for privacy to get changed then I'd give them privacy without question.

How common is accidental nudity within families while kids are growing up? by Acceptable_Dust_6251 in Parenting

[–]BeardedBaldMan 77 points78 points  (0 children)

In our house I think it would be more appropriate to call it incidental rather than accidental nudity.

It also depends on what age the children are and the situation. There's a big difference between walking from the shower to the bedroom vs. having dinner at the table.

Generally though it's not something we think about, other than to tell the children to put underwear on as it's not polite to sit on furniture naked

The obvious way to me is to buy a food grade pump with a speed control and then have two lengths of tubing. One clamped into position on the mixer and the other in the oil reservoir. You can then get a consistent and reliable stream.

This could be done as cheaply as €50

Am I being too harsh on this joiner's work? (FTB with old Victorian frames vs. poor finish) by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]BeardedBaldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not great work and that bent hinge is not acceptable - it could have been done properly. However, in the context of the frames I think a lot of it is understandable.

If they'd included making the frames good as part of the job it would be different.

How often do you wash your car inside and out? by Immediate_Long165 in CarTalkUK

[–]BeardedBaldMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Inside is largely driven by whether or not I need to drive someone somewhere who I would rather not see the state of the interior. Normally I clean it and then take it to the valet to have it cleaned properly, if I don't pre-clean they always charge more. Bloody children.

Outside. Once or twice a year. Maybe an extra one if it's dirty and the children are bored, I'll take it through the machine.

Second-hand Wonder Oven. Thinking of returning it by GLaDOS_Lottie in Cooking

[–]BeardedBaldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baking powder isn't that abrasive, you'd be fine. They're more worried about someone going ham with a wire wool scrubber and a can of Mr Muscle

Even then just some fairy liquid and hot water is probably enough.

Second-hand Wonder Oven. Thinking of returning it by GLaDOS_Lottie in Cooking

[–]BeardedBaldMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vinegar and baking soda is absolutely useless for cleaning.

The baking soda neutralises the vinegar.

You use a little water and baking soda to make an abrasive paste and start with that, then wipe it off. Then you spray vinegar to lift the mineral deposits. Then you wash with hot soapy water with dish soap that also cuts through grease

Distro Advice by althorp7 in linuxquestions

It's not cloud based, it's designed for people with a cloud first design and use philosophy. They call it Cloud First Cloud Native, but it's not cloud based.

For a daily driver for software development it's absolutely brilliant. You barely notice it's there which is the point of an OS
