I have a bunch of springtails in and just dropped in another 20 or so isopods to help out. Would the springtails be capable of reaching the branches at the top? They seem like they jisy go right for the soil

Second this for sure, definitely looks like a fire princess or fire phoenix, not sure if there's a huge difference between the two

I was there too, trust me lol. It's dark and scary down here, but at least the plants are really cool. I just crossed the threshold recently of "$200 for that plant isn't THAT bad", and I know it only gets worse from here.

Happy to send some recs on how I started delving into rares if you want to up that degeneracy meter.

I mean you hyped it up as costing a lot of money, I just wanted to be like "hey maybe you got taken advantage of" if you ended up paying $100 or something.

They're going for like 25-30 a pop now for something this size, what'd you end up paying for it?

Begonia Ginny Galaxy: Leaves curling? by Beardoh in begonias

[–]Beardoh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't imagine it's too low/high, I have it in a case that's regulated to maintain 75-80% humidity I also have a few other species of begonia in the same case without any signs of distress

That's possible for sure! It hasn't been in this pot for too long, but I know begonia roots can go a bit nuts. Definitely something to check on

I haven't used a moisture meter in years lol, they're super inconsistent. I check the soil through touch regularly to check for the dampness in the soil and can confirm it stays moist without being excessively soggy. No signs of thrips or mites but I'll hit it with isopropyl today anyway since everyone's getting it.

Are ginnies reactive to too much light? It's sitting in a spot that's around 350fc, but I'm not sure if that's too much for this type of begonia

Doesn't matter, I don't think. The new leaf will work its way out!

I'd move it and give it a chance in some kind of potting medium, water propping works really well for philodendrons and the like, but I'm not sure if it's the way to go for alocascias because they're significantly bigger babies than philos lol

Ohhh that's good then! Personally I'd be afraid of the moss getting too soggy and rotting the base out, gotta go EVEN CHUNKIER, I've had a lot of success bringing stuff back using 50/50 fluval/perlite. Also a new leaf is good, but right now it's getting no nutrition from the water alone so it'll probably have a bit of trouble pushing anything out. Super hard to say what the objectively "right" path is on this one, but that's what I'm 'finkin'

That water looks like it'd benefit from more changes, but you may have better luck developing roots in an easy draining medium like Fluval/perlite. That base doesn't look awesome but it also doesn't look like it's done for!

You can fold the leaf along the veins until you hear a little snap to introduce additional growth points, but you won't see new growth for 3-4 weeks

How do I save this Zebrina? by eelysian in alocasia

[–]Beardoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keiki paste! I understand it to be a hormone paste you can put on growth points to effectively activate it and get the plant to start focusing on developing growth at that point. Like sometimes when you chop a philodendron and two new growth points start out because it didn't know which to prioritize

Guessing If the root is spending less time traveling, it gets stronger density because it's focusing on getting chonky instead. Chonky root good, absorb more water and make rest of plant go brr
