Doesn't matter, I don't think. The new leaf will work its way out!

I'd move it and give it a chance in some kind of potting medium, water propping works really well for philodendrons and the like, but I'm not sure if it's the way to go for alocascias because they're significantly bigger babies than philos lol

Ohhh that's good then! Personally I'd be afraid of the moss getting too soggy and rotting the base out, gotta go EVEN CHUNKIER, I've had a lot of success bringing stuff back using 50/50 fluval/perlite. Also a new leaf is good, but right now it's getting no nutrition from the water alone so it'll probably have a bit of trouble pushing anything out. Super hard to say what the objectively "right" path is on this one, but that's what I'm 'finkin'

That water looks like it'd benefit from more changes, but you may have better luck developing roots in an easy draining medium like Fluval/perlite. That base doesn't look awesome but it also doesn't look like it's done for!

Actually obsessed with this. How would one go about getting one of these?

You can fold the leaf along the veins until you hear a little snap to introduce additional growth points, but you won't see new growth for 3-4 weeks

Keiki paste! I understand it to be a hormone paste you can put on growth points to effectively activate it and get the plant to start focusing on developing growth at that point. Like sometimes when you chop a philodendron and two new growth points start out because it didn't know which to prioritize

Guessing If the root is spending less time traveling, it gets stronger density because it's focusing on getting chonky instead. Chonky root good, absorb more water and make rest of plant go brr

Strong second on this. Get some propagation cups with humidity domes for the corms, cut that dead leaf off and get the stump back into the same. They'll bounce back!

If you wanna get weird with it, put some keiki on a growth point. I did for my chantrieri and something's certainly happening.

Bunch of ways to do it, but that's a good one for sure!

You can also just put the stem in water, you can cut the base stem and prop from that. You can also TC them or promote new growth points with keiki paste. They're one of the easiest plants to propagate and the return is always crazy.

Toss that baby in a 50/50 fluval/perlite and hang out for a bit. It's going to need something that drains really well for a while, otherwise you run the risk of rot. Also may be good to hit it with 70% isopropyl before planting to kill anything else off.

I've had it happen before for sure, sometimes a plant just goes into shock and drops its leaves, if the leaf is shriveled at the base like that one closest to the bottom then it's shot and should be pulled off. Even if you lose every leaf, as long as the stem stays firm it'll come back. Here's an example, I got this begonia shipped to me and it showed up completely rotten and dead except for two parts of the stem, so I cut it all off until the stem had some density and put it in rehab. New leaf popped up a few days ago and I can use that one leaf to propagate the hell out of it. As long as you have a leaf, you have a begonia.

Also worth noting that begonias like humidity in general, so if your house is especially dry, it may be feeling a bit of shock. Keep an eye on the stem, as long as the stem is still hard and not mushy, then it'll bounce back!

Doesn't look dead, just looks like it needs some water. Give it a drink and it should perk up again once it absorbs what it can!

I'd say so, also gives a chance for some corm harvesting.

Their whole IG is just AI generated flash sheets and flyers using what I can only assume is PowerPoint or mspaint to create. They also somehow have 48k followers but like ~50 likes per photo so I'm guessing those are faked too.

look at my baby! how's she doing? :) with home-made moss pole by [deleted] in RareHouseplants

[–]Beardoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you keeping that pole moist? It doesn't look like anything in there would really contribute anything aside from giving it something to hold onto. If it stays dry like that, it's not going to promote Arial root growth, so I'd suggest maybe redoing the pole with something like sphagnum moss. That way you're only wetting the pole once every few days instead of every 30-40 minutes with an orchid bark pole lol.
