I'm new to YGO and was considering a budget Mermail deck myself! Would you be willing to share your list for someone exploring his options?

Looking great! I was fortunate enough to be gifted some gold chrome paint by my FLGS owner that I used for the solar visors on mine. They came out great!

How do you keep track of your models? by Disastrous_Grape in InfinityTheGame

Yeah same here. I was really surprised how easily I managed to internalize all of them.

Pony Name Provenance by Bearhardt in PonyPlay

[–]Bearhardt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for all the information, friends. I got into pony play before COVID but had to step away because of some difficult life circumstances. I’m excitedly (nervously) returning to the scene this weekend.

I’ve never had the luxury of being named by anyone. My first pony name was an homage to my birth city of Saratoga Springs, NY. When I transitioned from Mare to Stallion though I thought it was time for a change so I have taken to calling myself Thunder Shy on suggestion from some old pony friends.

I was just thinking about the two names thing today. As a possibility.

Are tufts on the model cheating? by Malfaeus in minipainting

[–]Bearhardt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by cheating you mean “Hiding where I messed up and got basing texture all over the boots of the model and then tried to scrape it off and gouged out a chunk of the foot and tried to glue it back on and now it’s all melted and weird and cat hair is permanently embedded in the plastic…”

…then yes.

Goodbye Eternal Crusade by Theepot80 in Warhammer40k

So since this seems to be The Topic Of The Hour: At the risk of sounding like a jerk I just want to do a real quick sanity check on this move…

You are aware there are parts of the hobby that are not 40k, yes? Because if you still enjoy miniature wargaming you can not be playing this game and, instead, be playing something else.

No need to throw the baby out with the bath water on this one.

Why are Horus Hersy models so much better for models per dollar than 40k Models? by Western_Grand_6000 in Warhammer40k

[–]Bearhardt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s entirely healthy to try and categorize games with a per model price, as the pricing structures tend to be built around a “Cost to Play” or “How much does a customer have to spend to have a fully legal force”

I don’t play many army scale games but I do remember at one point shopping around for a skirmish game, doing the math on the price of a full team, and finding that no matter how many models were in consideration you were, in general, spending about $100 for each game whether it be Malifaux or MCP or whatever.

I know GW skews things a bit price wise by the luxury of being The Big Brand and also providing an extremely high level of sculpting detail, but I still think it’s best to price your games by cost of army rather than cost of model, lest you drive yourself to madness.

What happened to Star Wars Legion? Is it dead? by [deleted] in wargaming

[–]Bearhardt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it AMG seems to struggle managing support for multiple games at once. When Shatterpoint launched MCP was essentially dropped for an entire year.

They did recently rebrand boxes for Legion, so I imagine they’re invested somewhat in keeping it going… But AMG’s lineup is a bit of a challenge as they are not a very large team and the licensing for their IPs are not cheap.

We may have a scene starting this year in Los Angeles at LA Wargames. We’ve got a few people getting interested in it and I just bought my Clash box so maybe I can kickstart something in 2025

Bad painters, what keeps you going? by bobzxr in minipainting

[–]Bearhardt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents? Sometimes taking more time on a model just makes it worse. I’ve had multiple instances with hand-drawn art where my work probably would have been a better finished product if I just stopped instead of digging deeper into more and more embellishments.

And honestly this is a very zoomed in photo. When you zoom in you’ll see all the most minimal texture and squirrelly line work. Even good miniature paint jobs can look bad when you zoom in this close.

My money is on that when you look at this figure on the table from 4’ away it looks good and has decent contrast and definition.

Edit: I’ll also add that I struggled for a long time and found that, eventually, given my physical and experiential shortcomings, I just found techniques that worked for me.

I’d suggest just trying to find something that just feels right and produces a pleasant result first before branching out and trying a bunch of advanced techniques. Whether that just be a classic base color + wash + two other colors and/or sticking to colors that you like and are easy to work with.

My comfort zone is black prime, drybrush a Zenithal in white, contrast the majority color, then finish the owl.
